ACSA Institutional Data Report

Institutional Metrics for Architectural Education ACSA Research - June 2021 Introduction

Report Summary

Founded in 1912 to advance the quality of architectural education, the Association of Collegiate Schools of (ACSA) represents all accredited programs and their faculty across the United States and Canada, as well as nonaccredited and international affiliate members around the world. The ACSA Institutional Data Report combines data collected by ACSA with data reported to the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), the Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data System (IPEDS), the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, and other architecture organizations to investigate current and historical metrics of institutional effectiveness and begin to allow for peer insti- tution comparisons. The report details more than 1,120 architecture degree programs at 730 institutions in the United States, Canada and abroad, including trends in student enrollment, degrees offered, STEM designation, and reporting on student:faculty ratios and on-time graduation rates.

SAT

Using the 25th percentile and the 75th percentile scores reported, the SAT I: Reasoning Test showed an average three part score of 1730 for incoming architecture students. Scores on the Verbal and Writing sections were highly correlated and scores on the Quantitative section were consistently higher than the other two sections. Scores have been static for the last 4 years. Estimated averages for 2020 are as follows:

Verbal: 570-580 Quantitative: 590-600 Writing: 560-570

Graduate Admissions Statistics

GRE Like other standardized results reported here, the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) proved to be fairly con- sistent across accredited programs. The average scores for incoming students has been 154 and 152 on the GRE Quantitative and Verbal sections respectively. GRE Analytical scores averaged 3.3 since 2014 which is a return back to the norm from 2019. The scores reported in 2020 are the most recent data but as a result of COVID-19 and the attempts to decenter Whiteness at ACSA member school, many schools waived the GRE admission requirement. The affect on score reporting in architecture programs will not be public until 2022.

CIP CODE CHANGES FROM 2018-2021

Since the publication of the 2018 ACSA White Paper on Architectural Education Research and STEM, the number of architecture programs at ACSA member schools has grown significantly. In 2018 the ACSA Research and Scholarship Committee verified 13 institutions that utilized the only STEM-designated CIP Code for architecture and related services, 04.0902. Since that time, dramatic increases to the 04.0902 CIP code can be seen year after year. To date, sixty-two percent of ACSA full and candidate member schools have adopted the new CIP code.

Carnegie Classification Breakdown

ARCHITECTURE PROFILE BY CARNEGIE CLASSIFICATION

The sixth edition of the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) provided a revised sytem for classifying programs of study currently being offered at colleges and universities around the country. Released in July 2019, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has added over 300 new CIP codes, nine of which fall under Architecture and Related Services (CIP 04). The data shown below compares the profile of all institutions across higher education and the specfic profile of the institutions that offer an architecture degree. Most noteworthy is the difference between the twenty-three percent of 2-year schools that make up the profile of higher education and the fifty-five percent of two year schools that make up architecture’s profile. Additionally, the doctoral universities make up more than twice of the discipline’s profile as compared to higher education at large.

ACSA FULL AND CANDIDATE MEMBER TUITION AVERAGES

The 2019-2020 tuition averages reported below are based on annual tuition figures for NAAB and CACB programs. The data agregated in the table below were gathered through self-reported information provided to StudyArchitecture. com, the tuition data reported to the NAAB, and tutition figures provided on respective college and university registrar’s websites. Little changed from last year’s reporting as architecture schools reported numbers on par with the three percent tuition increase typically seen at institutions every year. On average, public institutions charge 2.0 - 2.5 times the in-state tution for out-of-state students. Tuition averages for private instutions report little difference between degree type. Con- sequently, the total cost of tution for the B.Arch at private instutitions is more expensive than the M.Arch due to the longer length of study. Tution averages for non-Canadian residents to study architecture in Canada are comparable to tuition averages for American students studying out-of-state. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in many schools freezing their tuition increases and those results will be captured in the 2022 ACSA Institutional Data Report.

For the 2019-2020 academic year, architecture schools reported a decline in the number student:faculty ratio as averaged across the programs. The average overall student:faculty ratio for this year is 13:1 which is down one student as compared to last year’s 14.1. This year schools also reported metrics to better understand the ratio of tenured faculty and adjunct fac- ulty as it relates to their student body. On average, the student:faculty ratio was higher for tenured faculty than for adjunct faculty reporting 29:1 and 25:1 respectively.

Faculty Credentials by Percentage

Degree Types for Full-Time Faculty

Faculty credentials are often discussed as a way of gauging research capability. While approximately half of the faculty population in NAAB-accredited programs hold an M.Arch, just under one third of the population have completed post-professional and Ph.D programs. This past year, data show significant growth in B.Arch credentials, largely as a result of new NAAB candidate schools joining ACSA mem- bership. Moreover, schools continue to report a decline in architectural registration. This year schools continued to report a decline in the percentage of full-time faculty who are registered in U.S. jurisdictions. However, it is worth noting that the statistics below do not include part-time and adjunct faculty, who are often thought to be licensed practitioners.

This graphic illustrates the volatility of the number of faculty who are also registered architects in the United States at NAAB-accredited programs. However, after a few years of increases, the number of the faculty holding doctorates in architecture declined from 2019 to 2020. These metrics mimic architecture’s struggle to find balance between professional experience and research expertise but do not include faculty from NAAB non- accredited programs that would increase the number of people in either credential count.

In the fall of 2020, ACSA asked schools for data on the number of courses taught each academic term and the number of credits attached to those courses. The numbers reported below suggest that faculty teaching design studios and other credit heavy courses frequently teach a total of 2 courses, 9 semester credits or 13.5 quarter credits. Adjunct and part0time faculty reported teaching less than their tenure and tenure-track colleagues and general faculty reported teaching more. Faculty administrators were the only group to sometimes have an expected course load of 0 courses and 0 credit hours.
