I00 Everyday Objects from Southeast Asia and Korea reetings from the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), G the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for Archaeology and Fine Arts (SEAMEO SPAFA) and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Secretariat (SEAMEO Secretariat). Our three organizations, which strive to develop education, mutual understanding and intercultural appreciation throughout the Southeast Asian and Asia-Pacific region, are pleased to collaborate once again on this exciting new project, “100 Everyday Objects from Southeast Asia and Korea”, which was developed within the framework of the “SEAMEO-APCEIU Collaboration on Educational Material Development for Cultural Understanding”. Since 2005, our organizations have collaborated on various projects related to multicultural education, including the educational card game “O’oh”, the digital game “SEA Journey”, as well as reading and audio-visual materials on folktales from Southeast Asia and Korea (the latter can be accessed at http://asianfolktales.unescoapceiu.org). Last year, we developed an educational book representing paintings from Southeast Asia and Korea that depict some of the local festivities and rituals shaped by our ancestors over centuries of cultural and historical development (the digital publication is available for download from the organizers’ respective websites: www.unescoapceiu.org, www.seameo-spafa.org and www.seameo.org). This year, thanks to the support of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, we sought the expertise of museum professionals and anthropology researchers to collect ‘everyday objects’ from Southeast Asia and Korea with the aim of developing an educational reference book that presents information on objects used in our homes and communities for our everyday lives.

  • Marine Corps Intelligence Activity Cultural Intelligence for Military Operations Malaysia Cultural Field Guide
UNCLASSIFIED//FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY Marine Corps Intelligence Activity Cultural Intelligence for Military Operations Malaysia Cultural Field Guide Summary • Malaysia’s population consists of 58 percent ethnic Malays, 24 percent ethnic Chinese, 8 percent ethnic Indian, and 10 percent other groups. • The three main ethnic groups (i.e., Malays, Chinese, and Indians) can be differentiated by their appearance, language, religion, and customs, though there is significant variation within each ethnic group. • Malays are predominantly Muslim, and as a result, the country is strongly influenced by Islam. Most Malaysian Muslims are moderate in their views. They do not want Malaysia to become an Islamic state, and regard Islam primarily as a religion, not a lifestyle. Some of Malaysia’s smaller religious and ethnic groups are concerned about what they perceive as the increasingly Islamic nature of Malaysian society. • Racial polarization is common in Malaysia, as there is little ethnic mixing or integration in either urban or rural areas. Malays living in rural areas rarely come across non-Malays, and Malays in the city tend to live around other Malays. Ethnic segregation is especially apparent in the separate school systems for each ethnic group. • The three main ethnic groups generally coexist peacefully, but there is an undercurrent of tension, especially between the Malays and the Chinese. Inter-ethnic violence has occurred several times over the last several decades; the Chinese are occasionally targeted as scapegoats for the country's problems. • Malaysians place strong emphasis on social order and deference to superiors rather than on individual achievement or personal initiative. Age, rank, social standing, wealth, and education are all used to determine superior-inferior relationships between individuals.

A Study on the Development of Baju Kurung Design in the Context of Cultural Changes in Modern Malaysia Hanisa Hassan Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD-S3), Jl Ganeca 10, 40132 Bandung, Jawa Barat, INDONESIA. [email protected] Published online: 15 November 2016 To cite this article: Hanisa Hassan. 2016. A study on the development of baju kurung design in the context of cultural changes in modern Malaysia. The baju kurung is prevalent in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia (Jambi, Riau, Padang, Bentan). Although these countries might refer to the style using different names, the baju kurung is defined by its similar cut and pattern. The advancement of current fashion has changed the concept and understanding of the baju kurung, which is closely related to changes in Malay cultural phenomena. This study examines modifications to baju kurung designs to determine if the style still represents the identity of Malay women. This study takes a qualitative approach by applying the aesthetic morphology analysis method to understand how design developments correspond to the cultural changes in modern Malaysia. This study focuses on the current development of baju kurung designs by using several samples of baju kurung designs by local Malay designers as the primary data. Historical references of baju kurung are used to identify variables that may have changed in modern designs.
