The Masters of Calatrava and the Castilian Civil War 1350-1369
The Masters of Calatrava and the Castilian Civil War 1350-1369 BY JOSEPH F. O'CALLAGHAN Düring the third quarter of the fourteenth Century the bitter civil war between King Pedro the Cruel (1350-1369) and his half-brother, Count Enrique of Trastamara, tore the kingdom of Castile asunder, dividing its leaders and people, allowing no one the privilege of neutrality. Prominent among the participants in the conflict were the masters of the military Order of Calatrava who, together with the masters of Santiago and Alcäntara, ranked among the great men of the realm. As the war progressed, the king and his challenger endeavored to control magisterial elections and, through them, the immense resources that the Order of Calatrava possessed in the modern provinces of Ciudad Real, Jaen, Cordoba, Seville, and so forth. The consequence was schism within the Order, the diversion of its interest and wealth to domestic politics rather than the reconquest, and an increasing brutalization of life, typified by the execution of one master by Pedro and another by Enrique. Above all, the civil war pointed up the crown's growing awareness of the need to subject all the military Orders to effective royal control. ^ Juan Nünez de Prado At the time of Pedro the CruePs accession to the throne in March 1350 at the youthful age of sixteen years, Juan Nünez de Prado was the master of Calatrava. The illegitimate son of a knight named Carpintero and Bianca, senora of Las Huelgas and daughter of King Afonso III of Portugal (1248-1279), he was legitimated in 1313, on his mother's request, 2 by Pope Clement V, and entered the Order of Calatrava. -

In the connection of the church and state, I have considered the former as subservient only, and relative, to the latter; a salutary maxim, if in fact, as well as in narrative, it had ever been held sacred. The Oriental philosophy of the Gnostics, the dark abyss of predestination and grace, and the strange transformation of the Eucharist from the sign to the substance of Christ's body, ^1 I have purposely abandoned to the curiosity of speculative divines. -

O argumento defendido é que os discursos identitários, especificamente aqueles em torno da Gens Francorum e da Gens Gothorum, eram deliberadamente plurais uma vez que voltados para resolução de conflitos que se desenvolviam no plano político. Palavras-chave: Gália Merovíngia; Hispânia Visigoda; identidades; política Abstract The research is a comparative study about the construction of identities as political strategies in the context of political polarization of Merovingian Gaul and Visigothic Hispania. Working with the analysis of diverse narrative genrers as Historiae, Laws and Hagiographies the inquiry aims to indicate the deliberate plurality of the identity discourses in the Gens Francorum and the Gens Gothorum due to the complexity and diversity of political issues. -
Linguistic Strata in Ancient Cantabria: the Evidence of Toponyms
SUMMARY: A detailed analysis of place-names in ancient Cantabria disproves the idea of a substantial pre-Indo-European or Basque presence in the region. Apart from a relatively small number of Roman names, indicative of a weak degree of romanization, the linguistic affiliation of toponyms is almost equally divided between Celtic and a non-Celtic Indo-European language which remains unidentified. It is an unfortunate fact that, apart from the accounts of Augustus’ campaigns in 26-19 B.C., the ancient sources have left us no narrative history of Cantabria. In particular, there is a paucity of information about the sequence and interaction of the various ethnic and linguistic groups that populated this region, leaving doubt as to whether the dominant language was Iberian, Basque, Celtic, or some earlier Indo-European (henceforth IE) tongue. While nineteenth- century scholars such as M. Assas and A. Fernández Guerra believed that the Cantabrians were Celtic, P. Bosch Gimpera considered them an Iberian enclave within the Celtic block, and J. Caro Baroja identified them as an autochthonous, pre-Celtic people1. -

The History of Jihad: from Muhammad to ISIS
ADVANCE PRAISE FOR THE HISTORY OF JIHAD “Robert Spencer is one of my heroes. He has once again produced an invaluable and much-needed book. Want to read the truth about Islam? Read this book. It depicts the terrible fate of the hundreds of millions of men, women and children who, from the seventh century until today, were massacred or enslaved by Islam. It is a fate that awaits us all if we are not vigilant.” —Geert Wilders, member of Parliament in the Netherlands and leader of the Dutch Party for Freedom (PVV) “From the first Arab-Islamic empire of the mid-seventh century to the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the story of Islam has been the story of the rise and fall of universal empires and, no less importantly, of never quiescent imperialist dreams. In this tour de force, Robert Spencer narrates the transformation of the concept of jihad, ‘exertion in the path of Allah,’ from a rallying cry for the prophet Muhammad’s followers into a supreme religious duty and the primary vehicle for the expansion of Islam throughout the ages. A must-read for anyone seeking to understand the roots of the Manichean struggle between East and West and the nature of the threat confronted by the West today.” —Efraim Karsh, author of Islamic Imperialism: A History “Spencer argues, in brief, ‘There has always been, with virtually no interruption, jihad.’ Painstakingly, he documents in this important study how aggressive war on behalf of Islam has, for fourteen centuries and still now, befouled Muslim life. He hopes his study will awaken potential victims of jihad, but will they—will we—listen to his warning? Much hangs in the balance.” —Daniel Pipes, president, Middle East forum and author of Slave Soldiers and Islam: The Genesis of a Military System “Robert Spencer, one of our foremost analysts of Islamic jihad, has now written a historical survey of the doctrine and practice of Islamic sanctified violence. -
