Thank you for everything. v The Foundational Rape Tale in Medieval Iberia Publication No._____________ María Rebeca Castellanos, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin, 2009 Supervisor: Michael Harney and Matthew Bailey The present study examines the rape episodes in Muslim and Christian historiography of the Iberian Peninsula between 9th and 13th century. These episodes possess a structure which the author defines as ―rape tale.‖ The rape tale has a stock cast of characters—a rapist ruler, the female rape victim, and her avenging guardian, and a predictable ending: the ruler will be deposed. In the works studied in this dissertation, every version of the rape tales is part of a discourse that legitimates an occupation, an invasion, a conquest. The stable structure of the rape tale may reveal its mythic origins. It is possible that before these stories were put into writing, they were elaborated orally. The importance of these allegorical tales requires the necessity of memorization by means of oral repetition, which is possible only through a paring down of details in order to obtain a clear pattern. The images, the actions, must be formulaic in order to be vi recovered effectively. Characters—no matter their historicity—are simplified into types. Hence in all myths, heroes are brave and strong; princesses in distress are beautiful; tyrannical rulers, lustful. The myth studied here appears in chronicles and national/ethnic histories written by a community that saw itself as the winning character in a story of conquest—or Reconquest. Marín-Arroyo 1,7 Environmental change has been proposed as a factor that contributed to the extinction of the Neanderthals in Europe during MIS3. Currently, the diferent local environmental conditions experienced at the time when Anatomically Modern Humans (AMH) met Neanderthals are not well known. In the Western Pyrenees, particularly, in the eastern end of the Cantabrian coast of the Iberian Peninsula, extensive evidence of Neanderthal and subsequent AMH activity exists, making it an ideal area in which to explore the palaeoenvironments experienced and resources exploited by both human species during the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition. Red deer and horse were analysed using bone collagen stable isotope analysis to reconstruct environmental conditions across the transition. A shift in the ecological niche of horses after the Mousterian demonstrates a change in environment, towards more open vegetation, linked to wider climatic change. In the Mousterian, Aurignacian and Gravettian, high inter-individual nitrogen ranges were observed in both herbivores. This could indicate that these individuals were procured from areas isotopically diferent in nitrogen. Diferences in sulphur values between sites suggest some variability in the hunting locations exploited, refecting the human use of diferent parts of the landscape. An alternative and complementary explanation proposed is that there were climatic fuctuations within the time of formation of these archaeological levels, as observed in pollen, marine and ice cores.

INTRODUCTION A rape victim who chooses to report the attack upon her to the authori- ties endures particular embarrassment and shame. The progress of her case through our criminal justice system has been compared to a second rape; the victim is made to feel that she, rather than the attacker, is on trial. If her assailant is adjudged not guilty, she must also endure damage to her reputation. What is most unfortunate, however, is that the shameful treat- ment she receives is a direct result of our society's rape laws, which are not designed to protect her, but rather the male possessory interest in her. Two elements are involved in the crime of rape: the penetration with force by the attacker and the lack of consent of the attacked. Each element is separate and distinct; one does not necessarily constitute evidence of the other.

These investigations have, however, largely privileged the importance of these activities to the upper levels of society. Attempts to examine the responses of the lower classes to death, and its consequent demands for disposal and commemoration, have focused on the activities of freedmen and slaves anxious to establish or maintain their social position. The free poor, living on the edge of subsistence, are often disregarded and believed to have been unceremoniously discarded within anonymous mass graves (puticuli) such as those discovered at Rome by Lanciani in the late nineteenth century. This thesis re-examines the archaeological and historical evidence for the funerary practices of the urban poor in Italy within their appropriate social, legal and religious context. The thesis attempts to demonstrate that the desire for commemoration and the need to provide legitimate burial were strong at all social levels and linked to several factors common to all social strata.

From this, an attempt is made to establish deviancy. Comparative evidence, such as literary, runic, legal and folkloric evidence will be used critically to shed perspective on burial practices and the artefacts found within the graves. The thesis will mostly cover burials from the Viking Age (late 8th century to the mid- 11th century), but where the comparative evidence dates from other periods, its validity is discussed accordingly. Two types of deviant burial emerged: the criminal and the victim. A third type, which shows distinctive irregularity yet lacks deviancy, is the healer/witch burial.

Bernard C. Brian Rose, Supervisor of Dissertation This dissertation investigates how Rome organized and paid for the considerable amount of labor that went into the physical transformation of the Middle Republican city. In particular, it considers the role played by the cost of public construction in the socioeconomic history of the period, here defined as 390 to 168 B.C. During the Middle Republic period, Rome expanded its dominion first over Italy and then over the Mediterranean. As it developed into the political and economic capital of its world, the city itself went through transformative change, recognizable in a great deal of new public infrastructure.

    The History of the Crusades Podcast presents Reconquista: The Rise of Al-Andalus and the Reconquest of Spain Episode 3 The Battle of 711 Hello again. Last time we saw a Muslim fighting force under the command of Tariq ibn Zayid leave Tangier and make its way to a place on the southern coast of Spain, which will later be called Gibraltar. When we left the last episode, Tariq had spread his army around the bay which lies adjacent to Gibraltar, while King Roderic had mustered his armies at Cordoba and was heading southwards towards Gibraltar. Now I would absolutely love to take you through a detailed blow-by-blow account of the massively significant battle which is about to take place, but unfortunately I can't. Just like we discovered when looking at the final years of the Visigoths in the last episode, there is an irritating lack of dependable source material about this event. In fact, even to this day, historians aren't able to agree on the rather basic fact of where exactly the battle took place. Most famous battles take their names from the place where the fighting played out, but by the fact that this battle is generally known only as “The Battle of 711”, you can see that even this is unclear. But luckily we do know some facts, and we can make some educated guesses about the rest. So with a huge disclaimer about the accuracy of all of this, here is a rundown of the Battle of 711. Now, as we saw in the last episode, King Roderic’s rise to the throne was opposed by Akhila, who had been promised a hereditary crown following the death of his father.
