I must begin with my family, Tom, Michael, Lisa, and Mom. Their love and support throughout this entire process have meant so much to me. I dedicate this project to my Mom especially; I must acknowledge that nearly every good thing I know and good decision I’ve made is because of her. She has (literally and figuratively) pushed me to achieve this dream. Mom has been my rock, my wall to lean upon, every single day. I love you, Mom. Tom, Michael, and Lisa have been the best siblings and sister-in-law. Tom thinks what I do is cool, and that means the world to a little sister. Michael and Lisa send their love and support (and pictures of their dogs), somehow knowing exactly when I could use a little bully-love. I would never have gotten to this point, writing a dissertation, if it had not been for my father. He was an eighth-grade science teacher who took Latin in college so he could better learn scientific names, and in the process fell in love with the ancient world. He fostered that love in his children, but died from cancer while I was still in middle school. In the first year of my master’s, I came across a letter of Cicero contemplating apotheosis for his late daughter Tullia, and I understood Cicero’s grief all too well. This set me on a path to the divine emperors of Rome; by studying these deified men, I hope to honor my father’s memory while looking forward to my own future, just as the Romans had done. I have been beyond fortunate to have a wonderful group of friends who have helped me, lifting me up when I’m down, rallying around me when I need support, and celebrating every triumph, no matter how small. I begin with Brad Bunch, because he will like that. I met Brad in undergrad Latin and he has a good soul. Brad was my roommate during my master’s and he became my best friend. Brad deserves so much and I can’t mention it all here, but he knows. Dr. Andy Smith and Shari Faber are the kind of people you’re lucky to know, and even luckier if they are your friends. Without them, I would have floundered in Columbia. Andy is a careful listener, a skilled scholar, and has a strong sense of right and wrong. He loves all living things and he taught me that sometimes the best option is to watch the turtles for a little while. Shari is the kind of person who knows herself, which gives her strength, and she lends that strength to those around her. I feel I can say that she believes in me, and believes I can accomplish what I aim to do, and that is empowering. Both have taught me that the important things are worth taking a day-off for. I would not have completed my dissertation if they hadn’t taught me to enjoy the moment I’m in and the people I’m with. The two of them together are unstoppable, and they are fierce in their friendship and I thank them for everything; thank you for making me a part of your family. I must also thank Anna Meyer, Shawna Young, Elizabeth Janda, Josh Nudell, Kristin Harper, and Cassie Yacovazzi. They deserve more space than this, but I did not want to overlook their significant and important roles. Anna makes all of the things and she is a great artist and friend. Shawna is my oldest friend and we both share a way of looking at things; I hope one day to be as confident in pursuing my goals as Shawna. Elizabeth has been a wonderful friend since I met her, and, despite my flaws, she still is quick to support and encourage me. Josh Nudell taught me how to argue like a scholar by actually showing me how scholarly debate works. Kristin Harper is one of the most happy, giddy people I know and it is so hard to be glum around her. Cassie Yacovazzi pushes me to be better and also recognize my humanity. All of these people and more have playing an important role in the completion of this project. I must also acknowledge the animals that have played a role in my completion of the project. I find that it is much easier to work when there is a snoring doggo or purring cat (or both) sitting next to me, reminding me to stand up, walk around, and sniff the roses. Through my work as a pet-sitter, I have met some great animals: Hektor, Gus, Max, Huge, Jan, Al, Stella, Enzo, Izzy, Trix, Cisco, Boots, and Jack (the goodest boy). Jack is no longer with us, and the world is a little less happy without his tippy-tapping toes. All of these people (and animals) deserve to be acknowledged beyond what I am able to say here. Thank you for all of your help, friendship, love, encouragement, and so much more. I hope one day I can be half the person you all are. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would first and foremost like to thank the faculty of the Department of Ancient Mediterranean Studies for their help with my research and for them encouraging me to look at the imperial cult in a different way. My advisor, Dr. Dennis Trout, has consistently pushed me to anchor and begin my interpretations in detailed analyses of textual evidence, material culture, epigraphy, and modern theories. His advice and guidance has taught me how to construct a narrative, and how to unpack my speech and hand gestures into a clear presentation of scholarship. Any flaws in my approach are very much my own. Dr. Raymond Marks has been my mentor throughout this process, listening to my ideas before they are strong enough to appear on the page. He was also the first one to tell me that in the writing process, I cannot keep every idea in the framework of a persuasive narrative, and things must be cut and saved for future projects. Dr. Anatole Mori has also encouraged and focused my arguments throughout this process and my graduate career. She helped me write my first seminar paper and demonstrated the importance of footnotes. Her guidance has taught me not only to stand by my own ideas, but also the importance and value of criticism. Additionally I must thank Mr. Aaron Harms and Dr. Stephanie Kimmey at the Writing Center. In the course of this year, I have had the opportunity to tutor all levels of students at every stage of the writing process as Fellow at the Writing Center.     CHAPTER FOUR AB URBE CONDITA: WHEN VIRI WERE VIRI Livy, like Thucydides, observed human nature and viewed history as a lesson for mankind in which great moral issues were at stake. 1 Toward this end, Livy went even further than did Thucydides, framing his history in "a series of moral episodes ... designed to bring out the character of the leading figures," thus reducing great events of the past to a level comprehensible to his reading public. 2 By endowing his characters with clear-cut virtues and vices, Livy was able to present his readers moral exempla with which they could readily identify. As P.G. Walsh writes, the real heroes of Ab Urbe Condita are pietas,fides, concordia, ratio, clementia, and so forth, who all wage continual war against the villains furor,ferocitas, temeritas, libido, luxuria and their like. 3 Because of this polarized framework, Livy's presentation of Roman history is a pano­ ramic chiaroscuro of dichotomies. His dualistic premise demands sim­ plistic characters so that the reader may know where a particular personage stands in the moral scheme. 4 An incidental component in the creation of what are, at best, two-dimensional characters, was the historian's use of vir and homo as capsule identifications. Livy's masculine terminology reflects that of Cicero in that he generally employs vir for the distinguished and homo for the humble, the foreigner (with an ethnic adjective), and as a term of abuse, sometimes in direct evocation of the Republican orator. The historiographical idiom, however, permits greater freedom and variation of usage than did the forensic speech.

T. Codrescu, Nr. 2, Iasi, Romania (Received 11 May 2012) Abstract Humanitas Romana is a concept that crosses both the Republican age of Rome and the Roman imperial period. In the Republic, clementia was both a personal attribute and a public virtue, intended to differentiate the Romans from the other peoples of antiquity in a sense of a moral superiority. In the Roman imperial period, the concept of humanitas Romana began to manifest more and more significantly through its component part, clementia, which became a cardinal virtue of the emperor and a judicial principle. With the coming to power of Julius Caesar, the notion of Clementia Caesaris was born. Afterwards, the status of Clementia Caesaris was enhanced during the Principate of Augustus. The emperor tends to become a provider of human rights. In a certain respect, if we refer to the principles of democracy, this transfer of the centre of gravity to the emperor in terms of human rights is negative. However, we could not assert that at that time were only negative aspects. We might consider as positive aspects the evolution of the concept of humanitas Romana through its component, the virtue of clementia, or the increased multicultural side of the Roman state. Despite the negative perception of Rome today, the clemency of ancient Caesar had reminiscences over time. The modern Caesar has tried to turn to Rome for lessons both positive and negative.

    Augustine and the Art of Ruling in the Carolingian Imperial Period This volume is an investigation of how Augustine was received in the Carolingian period, and the elements of his thought which had an impact on Carolingian ideas of ‘state’, rulership and ethics. It focuses on Alcuin of York and Hincmar of Rheims, authors and political advisers to Charlemagne and to Charles the Bald, respectively. It examines how they used Augustinian political thought and ethics, as manifested in the De civitate Dei, to give more weight to their advice. A comparative approach sheds light on the differences between Charlemagne’s reign and that of his grandson. It scrutinizes Alcuin’s and Hincmar’s discussions of empire, rulership and the moral conduct of political agents during which both drew on the De civitate Dei, although each came away with a different understanding. By means of a philological–historical approach, the book offers a deeper reading and treats the Latin texts as political discourses defined by content and language. Sophia Moesch is currently an SNSF-funded postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford, working on a project entitled ‘Developing Principles of Good Govern- ance: Latin and Greek Political Advice during the Carolingian and Macedonian Reforms’.     TransAntiquity TransAntiquity explores transgender practices, in particular cross-dressing, and their literary and figurative representations in antiquity. It offers a ground-breaking study of cross-dressing, both the social practice and its conceptualization, and its interaction with normative prescriptions on gender and sexuality in the ancient Mediterranean world. Special attention is paid to the reactions of the societies of the time, the impact transgender practices had on individuals’ symbolic and social capital, as well as the reactions of institutionalized power and the juridical systems. The variety of subjects and approaches demonstrates just how complex and widespread “transgender dynamics” were in antiquity. Domitilla Campanile (PhD 1992) is Associate Professor of Roman History at the University of Pisa, Italy. Filippo Carlà-Uhink is Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter, UK. After studying in Turin and Udine, he worked as a lecturer at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and as Assistant Professor for Cultural History of Antiquity at the University of Mainz, Germany. Beneath each statue an inscription was appended. Many of these inscriptions, known also as elogia, have survived. They record the name, magistracies held, and a brief account of the achievements of the individual. The reasons why these inscriptions were included in the Forum is the focus of this thesis. This thesis argues, through a detailed analysis of the elogia, that Augustus employed the inscriptions to propagate an image of himself as the most distinguished, and successful, leader in the history of Rome.     RITUAL CLEANING-UP OF THE CITY: FROM THE LUPERCALIA TO THE ARGEI* This paper is not an analysis of the fine aspects of ritual, myth and ety- mology. I do not intend to guess the exact meaning of Luperci and Argei, or why the former sacrificed a dog and the latter were bound hand and foot. What I want to examine is the role of the festivals of the Lupercalia and the Argei in the functioning of the Roman community. The best-informed among ancient writers were convinced that these were purification cere- monies. I assume that the ancients knew what they were talking about and propose, first, to establish the nature of the ritual cleanliness of the city, and second, see by what techniques the two festivals achieved that goal. What, in the perception of the Romans themselves, normally made their city unclean? What were the ordinary, repetitive sources of pollution in pre-Imperial Rome, before the concept of the cura Urbis was refined? The answer to this is provided by taboos and restrictions on certain sub- stances, and also certain activities, in the City. First, there is a rule from the Twelve Tables with Cicero’s curiously anachronistic comment: «hominem mortuum», inquit lex in duodecim, «in urbe ne sepelito neve urito», credo vel propter ignis periculum (De leg. II 58). Secondly, we have the edict of the praetor L. Sentius C.f., known from three inscrip- tions dating from the beginning of the first century BC1: L. Besides magical practices against the property and lives of people, the Romans also used generally known and used protective and healing magic. Sometimes magical practices were used in official religious ceremonies for the safety of the civil and sacral community of the Romans. It is uncertain how magic has been understood and practised in differ- ent cultural contexts and what the difference is (if any) between magical and religious praxis. Similarly, no satisfactory and all-encompassing definition of ‘magic’ exists. It appears that no singular concept of ‘magic’ has ever existed: instead, this polyvalent notion emerged at the crossroads of local custom, religious praxis, superstition, and politics of the day. Individual scholars of magic, positioning themselves as ostensi- bly objective observers (an etic perspective), mostly defined magic in opposition to religion and overemphasised intercultural parallels over differences1.

Brian Rose, Supervisor of Dissertation This dissertation investigates how Rome organized and paid for the considerable amount of labor that went into the physical transformation of the Middle Republican city. In particular, it considers the role played by the cost of public construction in the socioeconomic history of the period, here defined as 390 to 168 B.C. During the Middle Republic period, Rome expanded its dominion first over Italy and then over the Mediterranean. As it developed into the political and economic capital of its world, the city itself went through transformative change, recognizable in a great deal of new public infrastructure.
