  • Civil Disobedience Movement in India
Course Name- B.A.L.L.B. IInd Sem. Subject- History Teacher- Dr. Niru Jain Topic- Emergence of Mahatma Gandhi Civil Disobedience Movement in India The Civil Disobedience Movement was one of the most significant movements launched by Mahatma Gandhi in the course of India’s freedom struggle. Causes of Civil Disobedience Movement There were three main causes of the civil disobedience movement: 1 Formation of the Simon Commission 2. Demand for Dominion Status 3. Protests against the arrest of social revolutionaries Formation of the Simon Commission In November 1927 the British government in the UK constituted the Indian Statutory Commission, popularly known as the Simon Commission after the name of its Chairman to recommend further Constitutional reforms in India. However, no Indian was nominated as a member of the commission that resulted in outrage against the All-White commission in India since this action of the British government, which excluded Indians from the Simon Commission, implied that Indians were not fit to decide the next course of constitutional reforms. Consequently, there were huge demonstrations and strikes in different cities of India wherever the commission visited. Demand for Dominion Status In the Calcutta session of Indian National Congress (INC) of December 1928, a demand for dominion status (Swaraj) was raised and a period of one year was given to the British Indian government to accept the Congress demands failing which nothing short of complete Independence from foreign rule would become the primary objective of the Congress and a Civil Disobedience movement under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi would be launched to realise this objective.

Lowry & Ass. Prof. Derya Gürses Tarbuck June, 2014, 199 pages Claims of holy war characterized the Middle Ages in both Muslim Anatolia and Christian Europe, where soldiers on both sides were portrayed as holy warriors. Named gazis, akıncıs, alps, chevaliers and knights, they came from the elite military classes. Literary depictions of these men as holy warriors were fundamentally idealized topoi created by writers who were patronized by or were close to those in power.

Gisèle M.A. Department of History Supervisor: Prof. Dr Halil İNALCIK May 2009 The aim of this thesis is to analyze the possible impact of the Black Death on the early Ottoman society. Firstly, a temporal and spatial analysis of the outbreaks was established using contemporary Ottoman, Byzantine and Latin sources. In view of the territorial expansion of the Ottoman state in the period studied, information on the adjacent territories was included. The response towards plague was then evaluated taking into account the information obtained on the frequency and geographical distribution of the disease and contrasted with certain previous theories on the impact of plague on Ottoman society. The study reveals that the high frequency of plague outbreaks identified by this study can be linked to a behavior of overall acceptance and to specific actions of an administrative and religious nature. Prof. Ferenc Péter Csirkés Keywords: History-Writing in Persian, Shah Qasim, Kanz al-javahir, Political Legitimacy, Ottoman Genealogies The present thesis discusses Shah Qasim’s (d. 1539-1540) Kanz al-javahir al-saniya fi’l-futuhat al-Sulaymaniya (Treasure of the Brilliant Jewels among the Conquests of Süleyman), a chronicle in Persian commissioned by Süleyman I (r. 1520-1566). It claims that Shah Qasim produced this work to legitimize Ottoman rule in the eyes of Persian speaking elites of Iraq and Iran. Süleyman and his court chose Shah Qasim for this job because he was an emigre from Tabriz, who absorbed the Timurid way of history-writing and was a master in the chancery style.
