“Kitab-I Dedem Korkut” in Turkish Folklore of the 20Th Century
The Tale of the Epic Cycle of “Kitab-i Dedem Korkut” in Turkish Folklore of the 20th Century Tatiana A. Anikeeva Until very recent times, some tales related to the medieval epic cycle of “The Book of Dede Korkut” continued to exist on the territory of modern Turkey and the South Caucasus. These include, first of all, the tale of Bamsi Beyrek, which proceeded its further existence within the framework of a completely different, much later genre of Turkish traditional literature – the hikâye. Turkish folk narrative form called hikâye which is a special genre of Turkish folk literature. It has been existing for a long time mainly in the South of Turkey and in the Eastern Turkey since the Middle Ages. Hikâye is a prose text that includes folk songs and verses, that can be transmitted orally by story-tellers-aşiks or meddahs in coffee houses. The main peculiarity of this genre is its existence both in oral and written traditions at the same time; this genre occupies a borderline between oral and literary traditions. These are prosaic texts of novelistic or fantastic content that once were performed exclusively in oral form; sometimes they are often folklorized versions of literary plots widely known in the Middle East, or, as in the case of the tale of Bamsi Beyrek, are the part of a large epic cycle (“The Book of Dede Korkut”). These folk narratives include the stories of the prosaic version of the epic legend about Köroğlu, which has become widespread in Asia Minor and well-known in the Caucasus, the Middle East and Central Asia, as well as a number of other plots, such as “Ilbeylioğlu”, a story about Shakh-Ismail (“Şah-Ismail”), “Celali Bey ile Mehmet Bey”, “Kirmanşah”, etc. -

Prof. Dr. Derya GÜRSES TARBUCK To my beloved Can, for all his kindness and support… ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I must thank my research supervisors, Professor Heath W. Lowry and Assistant Professor Derya Gürses Tarbuck for giving me the chance to work together and the opportunity to study at Bahçeşehir University. Without their support and assistance this thesis could not even exist as an idea. I would also like to thank Associate Professor Dr. Fikret Yılmaz for making me question certain matters on the military warfare of the early Ottomans I had not noticed before. I also have to thank Professor Paul Latimer from Bilkent University for his assistance and for lighting my path to an understanding of European history with his advice. ABSTRACT A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPTS OF HOLY WAR AND THE IDEALIZED TOPOS OF THE HOLY WARRIOR IN MEDIEVAL ANATOLIAN AND EUROPEAN SOURCES Ceren Çıkın Sungur History Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Heath W. Lowry & Ass. Prof. Derya Gürses Tarbuck June, 2014, 199 pages Claims of holy war characterized the Middle Ages in both Muslim Anatolia and Christian Europe, where soldiers on both sides were portrayed as holy warriors. Named gazis, akıncıs, alps, chevaliers and knights, they came from the elite military classes. Literary depictions of these men as holy warriors were fundamentally idealized topoi created by writers who were patronized by or were close to those in power. -
Sally Pomme Clayton* the Theme of the Warrior Maiden Appears in Several Genres of Middle Eastern and Centr
E.L.O., 7-8 (2001-2) THE WOMAN WARRIOR - FACT OR TALE Sally Pomme Clayton* PORTRAIT OF A WARRIOR WOMAN The theme of the warrior maiden appears in several genres of Middle Eastern and Central Asian folklore: epics; legends; myths; folktales, and folksongs. Although many of these stories have been written down, they existed, and still exist, as oral performances. There are typical motifs associated with the warrior woman. She: is a virgin; is surrounded by a band of warrior maidens, most often numbering forty; is armed and fights in battles; disguises herself as man; will not marry unless she can be beaten at wrestling, fighting, or the singing of epics. Her story has various endings, when defeated she: looses her virginity; looses her power along with her virginity; falls in love with her vanquisher and stops fighting, or she marries and has children but continues to fight as a warrior. Not all these motifs appear together in one tale, but it is surprising how frequently many of these elements do appear together. The character of the warrior woman appears so frequently that there are too many examples to mention all of them here. She can be found in Arabic, Turkic, Greek and Persian folklore. I will give a selection of examples from different parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. Then I will examine two epics in more detail, looking in particular at what the relationships might be between the deeds and roles of the warrior woman of story and the roles ascribed to women in the Middle East and Central Asia. -
The Black Death in Early Ottoman Territories: 1347-1550 Gisele Marien
THE BLACK DEATH IN EARLY OTTOMAN TERRITORIES: 1347-1550 The Institute of Economics and Social Sciences of Bilkent University by GISELE MARIEN In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS in THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY BILKENT UNIVERSITY ANKARA May 2009 ABSTRACT THE BLACK DEATH IN EARLY OTTOMAN TERRITORIES: 1347-1555 Marien. Gisèle M.A. Department of History Supervisor: Prof. Dr Halil İNALCIK May 2009 The aim of this thesis is to analyze the possible impact of the Black Death on the early Ottoman society. Firstly, a temporal and spatial analysis of the outbreaks was established using contemporary Ottoman, Byzantine and Latin sources. In view of the territorial expansion of the Ottoman state in the period studied, information on the adjacent territories was included. The response towards plague was then evaluated taking into account the information obtained on the frequency and geographical distribution of the disease and contrasted with certain previous theories on the impact of plague on Ottoman society. The study reveals that the high frequency of plague outbreaks identified by this study can be linked to a behavior of overall acceptance and to specific actions of an administrative and religious nature. Keywords: Osman Gazi, Sultan Osman I Introduction Osman I. or Osman Bay (full form: Abū al-mulūk al- Sulṭān al-ghāzī Fakhr al-Dīn QaraʻUthmān Khān al-aw- wal bin Ertuğrul bin Sulaymān Shāh al-qayawi al-Tur- kumānī), was the leader of the Kayı Turkic clan and one of the border governors for the Sultanate of Rûm, and the founder of the Ottoman dynasty that ruled over the Balkans, Anatolia, the Levant, and North Africa for 600 years until it expired with the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1922. Vakıf Belgelerine Göre Osmanlı Devleti'nin Kuruluş Dönemi Aileleri II
Vakıf Belgelerine Göre Osmanlı Devleti’nin Kuruluş Dönemi Aileleri II: Âl-i Timurtaş Paşa* Vedat Turgut** Families in the Formation Stage of the Ottoman Empire According to Endowment Deeds II: The Family of Timurtaş Paşa Abstract The studies on the motives regarding the establishment of the Ottoman Empire, the respective groups’ role in it and notable families distinguished among those groups have remained limited due to the insufficiency of the related documents. It has not been so easy to explain how the Ottomans became a universal state and stronger than the other beyliks, which seemed to have been stronger than the formers. The policy followed during the reigns of Murad Hüdâvendigâr and his son Yıldırım Bayezid, the period during which the effects of that transformation were felt signifi- cantly, was defined as the activity of liquidating the beyliks, of which asabiyyahs were the same the Ottomans’ one as. This study as the continuation of the thesis claiming that the borders of the loyalty to the “hutbe” had exceeded to Bithynia aims to show the transformation process of the weak binds of the Ottomans with the beyliks into a full hegemony through Kara Timurtaş Paşa and his sons. Timurtaşzâdes, who had continued the power from the the beginning to the “great conquest” should be viewed as another significant family of the establishment period. The contributions that Ali, Oruç and Umur Beys as well as Yahşi and Firuz Beys, the other sons of Timurtaş Paşa had made for the recovery of the state after the battle of Ankara, and their roles in social policy via the waqfs they had founded can be seen as the major frame of this study. -
