AAP SUBMISSION TO THE SENATE INQUIRY ON MEDIA DIVERSITY AAP thanks the Senate for the opportunity to make a submission on the Inquiry into Media Diversity in Australia. What is a newswire A newswire is essentially a wholesaler of fact-based news content (text, pictures and video). It reports on politics, business, courts, sport and other news and provides this to other media outlets such as newspapers, radio and TV news. Often the newswire provides the only reporting on a subject and hence its decisions as to what to report play a very important role in informing Australians about matters of public interest. It is essential democratic infrastructure. A newswire often partners with other global newswire agencies to bring international stories to a domestic audience and also to take domestic stories out to a global audience. Newswires provided by news agencies have traditionally served as the backbone of the news supply of their respective countries. Due to their business model they contribute strongly to the diversity of media. In general there is a price for a defined number of circulation – be it printed papers, recipients of TV or radio broadcasters or digital recipients. The bigger the circulation, the higher the price thus making the same newswire accessible for small media with less purchasing power as well as for large media conglomerates with strong financial resources.1 This co-operative business model has been practically accepted world-wide since the founding of the Associated Press (AP) in the USA in the mid-19th century. Newswire agencies are “among the oldest media institutions to survive the evolution of media production from the age of the telegraph to the age of 2 platform technologies”.

Port Lincoln Times (SA : 1927 - 1954), Friday 18 September 1936, page 3 EARLY DAYS OF EYRE PENINSULA Tolmer's Enquiry Into Tragedies (BY J. D. SOMERVILLE.) (No., 4.) To a great extent, as the basis of the narrative of the poisoning of natives, the murder of Beevor and Mrs. Easton and the raid on Home's station, I am using the information in Alexander Tolmer's book of rem iniscences, published in 1882. He arrived at Port Lincoln just in time to take charge of the apprehension of the perpetrators, and has given a reasonable record of the trying period. In condensing the account I have for the most part used his own words, even though quotation marks are not shown. In the course of his narrative he states that some of his reports were not made available for use in his book, as they could not be found, so a great deal of what will now be called the ' Big Push,' was written from memory. Like Tolmer, I have been un able to find his reports ; probably they were impounded in the Supreme Court. Where possible, Tolmer's state ments have been checked, so that the truth if possible could be ascertained. Official correspondence has been carefully searched, and where necessary Tolmer's account has been enlarged. The Archivist of the Public Library has produced almost innumerable documents, relating to the period 1848- 1850, and with the permission of the Public Library Board, many extracts from them are given. RECOLLECTIONS OF MR. MYERS The recollections of Mr. Daniel Robert Myers, which were published a few years ago in ' The Port Lincoln Times,' will also be drawn upon for some details.

Most caravan parks across the region were filled and many had to turn people away as people prepared to celebrate the arrival of 2015. With nearly 90 caravan sites and 30 cabins, the Port Lincoln Caravan Park put people wherever they could fit for New Year's Eve. Manager Carly Bache, who took over the park's operations 14 months ago, said it was busier this year compared to last year with more travellers on the road. "We've had a few coming in for January who are frequent visitors," she said. "A lot of the travellers have little ones, there were a few grey nomads here and a few families come in for two to three nights and then usually extend. "It's excellent, and is great for Port Lincoln as well." The Coffin Bay Caravan Park had been full since December 27, with more than 150 caravan sites and 15 cabins filled, including for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. This was great news for owners Sharon and Andrew Bowey, who had taken over managing the park about three weeks ago. "New Year's was busy, we had lots of people wanting to come, and had to turn some away," Mrs Bowey said.
