While providing a broad historical context for this relationship, it focuses specifically on the past decade and the significant changes in communications practice within many Australian court jurisdictions. The study critically examines the role of public information officers (PIOs) in the Australian court system from 1993. It also investigates debates around experimentation with television cameras in Australian courts. It further critically examines other initiatives, undertaken by the courts through the PIO, including the development of court-media liaison committees, judgment summaries, websites and standardised request forms. This investigation brings together a range of perspectives about the court-media relationship. The findings are based on responses from 32 semi-structured interviews, conducted across seven jurisdictions in Australia over 28 months. Those interviewed include judges, PIOs, television reporters, news directors and newspaper reporters.

Pretty much everything from marlin and wahoo to bream and bass can be caught in the waters along this part of the coast, depending on the season. Just to the south of Port Macquarie is the mid sized town of North Haven, which is one of those very versatile places which would appeal to most people who enjoy casting a line. North Haven is situated on the northern side of the Camden Haven estuary system and there are several other small towns also in the vicinity including Laurieton and Dunbogan. So although the area has that laid back north coast appeal, it’s certainly not backwards as far as shopping and facilities go. I had previously visited the area on numerous occasions, enjoying the high standard of estuary fishing there. During my latest visit however, I got to sample the offshore scene and didn’t come away disappointed. My mate Wayne towed his plate alloy boat up from the Central Coast and we camped in our tents for a few nights at the Brigadoon holiday park. Sadly, some heavy rain greeted us as we arrived, which didn’t make for very suitable tent setting up weather. The rain soon passed though and we enjoyed a few days of fantastic weather and great fishing, with plenty of kingfish and teraglin to keep us busy. OFFSHORE OPTIONS It was interesting to check out the depths and reefs systems along this part of the coast.

Packer, who was Australia‟s wealthiest citizen, was a sometime newspaper owner (mainly regional newspapers, but also the Canberra Times, 1987-89), and the principal shareholder in Publishing & Broadcasting Ltd (PBL), which runs, amongst other enterprises, the biggest stable of magazines in Australia and the Nine television network. His father, Sir Frank Packer, owned the Daily Telegraph from 1936-72 and started Channel 9 in both Sydney and Melbourne; and Kerry‟s grandfather, Robert Clyde Packer, was a newspaper manager and owner whose fortunes received a wonderful boost when he was given a one-third interest in Smith’s Weekly.
