Executive summary Introduction This is a regionally based multi-species recovery plan for twenty-one nationally listed and two state listed threatened plant species found on Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. Table 1 lists the species addressed in this plan. The recovery plan is prepared within the requirements of the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and guidelines produced by Environment Australia (2002). The plan’s strategic, regional approach to threatened flora recovery will provide direction to managers who are planning for and funding the sustainable management of Eyre Peninsula’s natural resources (see Sections 4 and 29-31 in particular). Individual species sections in the plan (Sections 6-28) will be useful for plant enthusiasts wishing to pursue recovery of individual species or groups of species (e.g. orchids or wattles) that are specific to their region or area of interest. The individual species sections present information such as biology and ecology, known threats, and recovery actions for each of the 23 species addressed in the plan. Goals and objectives Two recovery goals form the basis of this plan: Goal 1 Recover threatened plant species critical habitat on Eyre Peninsula. Goal 2 Recover threatened plant species populations on Eyre Peninsula. These are 30 year goals, as they are realistically achievable only over a long-term time frame (i.e. by 2037). The threatened flora species addressed within this plan (Table 1) are prioritised based on the literature, field observations, formal studies, previous actions and known threats. The recovery of these species, and their critical habitat, will be achieved through the completion of Objectives, Actions and Performance Criteria (Section 4 and Appendix D). Priority Focus Work Areas are identified in Figure 30.1. Recovery of threatened flora species is defined by five objectives: Objective 1 Obtain baseline information, including critical and potential habitat, for each threatened flora species. Objective 2 Increase understanding, appreciation and involvement in threatened flora recovery efforts. Objective 3 Manage immediate threats and improve threatened flora critical habitat. Objective 4 Conduct research critical to management by addressing knowledge deficiencies in threatened flora biology and ecology (including threat identification). Objective 5 Monitor threatened flora populations and evaluate the success of recovery actions. Actions within the recovery plan are relevant for 5 years, at which point the plan will require review. During review, progress towards the goals should be assessed and actions may subsequently need to be modified. Success will be determined by whether species are either down-listed or stabilised, according to IUCN criteria (IUCN 2001). It is likely that within 5 years some threatened flora species will be successfully down-listed (see targets in Table 1); however, the ability to down-list species is influenced by the species’ priority category (Table 29.1) and the corresponding level of allocated resources. To fund the entire recovery plan, a financial investment of approximately $ 300 000 per year for 5 years will start meeting the conservation needs of all threatened flora taxa and cricital habitat identified within this plan. Wider benefits Implementation of this plan contributes to holistic natural resource management goals, including habitat protection and management, linking fragmented habitats, strategic threat abatement, and community engagement in regional biodiversity and conservation issues. Anticipated broader ecological benefits of the plan include: • maintenance of habitat integrity that facilitates ecosystem adaptation to climate change • protection of water dependent ecosystems, such as wetlands and riparian areas, within threatened flora species critical habitat • an improved understanding of threatened flora and insect/pollination processes • an improved understanding of soil biota function in threatened plant habitats.     Botanical name Acacia merrallii F.Muell., Proc. Linn. Soc. New South Wales ser. 2, 5: 18 (1890) The botanical name commemorates Edwin Merrall who collected the type specimen from near Lake Brown in 1890 (see Hall 1984 for biographical details). Common name Merrall’s Wattle. Characteristic features Shrubs low and spreading. Phyllodes short and broad, smooth, thick and sub-fleshy, minutely hairy when young but glabrous with age, obscurely 1-nerved on each face, apical point distinct. Heads globular. Pods sub-terete, small, strongly curved to irregularly coiled, dark brown to black. Aril bright orange (rarely yellow), conspicuous and partially sheathing the seed. Description Habit. Low-domed or flat-topped, multi-stemmed shrubs (0.2-)0.3-1.5(-2.5) m tall, often +/- circular in plane view and the dense crown spreading 1-4 m wide. Bark. Smooth and grey from base of main stems to the branchlets. New shoots. Grey-green due to a dense layer of hairs. Branchlets. Usually minutely hairy. Phyllodes. Variable in shape and size, obliquely obovate to elliptic-orbicular or oblong-elliptic, rarely ovate, usually 8-25 mm long and 5-17 mm wide with l:w = 1.2-3, smooth, thick and sub-fleshy, green, grey-green or sub-glaucous, finely appressed- hairy when young but becoming glabrous with age; with 1 obscure longitudinal nerve (midrib) on each face, lateral nerves +/- absent; marginal nerves prominent and yellowish; apices ending in a small, curved or straight point which varies from innocuous to +/- pungent; gland situated on the upper margin of the phyllode (on its lower half), not raised.

    Botanical name Acacia colletioides Benth., London J. Bot. 1: 336 (1842) The botanical name is derived from Colletia (a genus in the family Rhamnaceae) and the Greek suffix -oides (like). Some species referred to Colletia have a resemblance to the spiny, rigid foliage of this Acacia. Common names Wait-a-while, Pin-bush, Spine Bush. Characteristic features Large, prickly, much-branched shrubs. Phyllodes +/- terete, sessile, rigid, straight to shallowly curved, widely spreading, finely 8-nerved (with a distinct inter-nerve space between each nerve), narrowed to needle-like points. Heads sub-globular on short peduncles. Pods strongly curved to openly coiled or twisted. Seeds black and 2/3 sheathed by a conspicuous, orange or yellow aril. Description Habit. Harsh, rigid, prickly, much-branched, dense, rounded, usually multi-stemmed shrubs (0.5)1-3 m tall and about the same across, maturing to single-stemmed small trees 3-4 m tall with a dense canopy occupying 50% of the total plant height, in open sites (e.g. roadverges) it grows as a domed plant with the canopy extending to ground level, in dense vegetation it can grow as a small, erect plant with spindly stems and non-spreading crowns (however, these forms are not common in the Kalannie region). Branchlets. Glabrous or sparsely hairy, scarred where phyllodes have fallen. Phyllodes. More or less terete, sessile, inserted on distinct, yellow stem projections, 1.5-3(-4) cm long, 1-1.5 mm in diameter, rigid, widely spreading, straight to shallowly curved, green, glabrous; longitudinal nerves 8, widely spaced and distinct; apices narrowed to rigid, needle-like points.

HE present study aims to study the floristic characteristics of the native trees and shrubs T(with height ≥50cm) in the Egyptian flora. The floristic characteristics include taxonomic diversity, life and sex forms, flowering activity, dispersal types,economic potential, threats and national and global floristic distributions. Nine field visits were conducted to many locations all over Egypt for collecting trees and shrubs. From each location, plant and seed specimens were collected from different habitats. In present study 228 taxa belonged to 126 genera and 45 families were recorded, including 2 endemics (Rosa arabica and Origanum syriacum subsp. sinaicum) and 5 near-endemics. They inhabit 14 habitats (8 natural and 6 anthropogenic). Phanerophytes (120 plants) are the most represented life form, followed by chamaephytes (100 plants). Bisexuals are the most represented. Sarcochores (74 taxa) are the most represented dispersal type, followed by ballochores (40 taxa). April (151 taxa) and March (149 taxa) have the maximum flowering plants. Small geographic range - narrow habitat - non abundant plants are the most represented rarity form (180 plants). Deserts are the most rich regions with trees and shrubs (127 taxa), while Sudano-Zambezian (107 taxa) and Saharo-Arabian (98 taxa) was the most. Medicinal plants (154 taxa) are the most represented good, while salinity tolerance (105 taxa) was the most represented service and over-collecting and over-cutting was the most represented threat.
