Karen Gillen, of Melbourne, has compiled the three indexes. The first, appearing in 2004 and covering issues 1 to 25, was published only as a printed version. The second, a composite index covering issues 1 to 50 (October 1999 to December 2008) was published in 2009 in both printed and digital form. This third index, published in January 2014, covers issues 1 to 75 (October 1999 to December 2013) and is in digital form only. The Australian Newspaper History Group (ANHG) grew out of a three-day conference on local newspapers at an historic newspaper site – Chiltern, Victoria, home of the Federal Standard, published from 1859 until 1970. One of those attending the conference, held on 1- 3 October 1999, was Victor Isaacs, of Canberra, who circularised some groups and individuals about the possibility of forming a newspaper history group. The resultant Australian Newspaper History Group has no constitution or officers, unless you count the newsletter editor, who has taken on being treasurer, editor, circulation manager and book editor and publisher, conference organiser (once) and other roles from time to time. The ANHG is really a network of newspaper-history buffs – some of whom are editors, newspaper managers, librarians, historians, academics and journalists, and some of whom are based overseas. It exists to stay informed and to build bridges with one another as needed. For example, the group’s newsletter has published from time to time an audit of members’ research interests, complete with email and other contact details. The group has had more than 200 subscribers for more than a decade, but the newsletter has far more readers as several of the subscribers are libraries. Much of the contact is made electronically. At January 2014, the ANHG had 186 digital subscribers and eighteen hard-copy subscribers (some of them being the State Libraries of NSW and Victoria and the National Library of Australia). Often special announcements are circulated electronically between one newsletter and the next. Victor Isaacs edited the first four newsletters, and I have edited the numbers since, apart from the occasional newsletter when I have been absent from home for a prolonged period. Initially Victor issued the newsletter in small size and almost monthly (October and November 1999 and January and February 2000) and then I issued a newsletter every six to eight weeks, gradually increasing the paging. Ten issues appeared by the close of 2000. Since 2001 I have issued it five times a year. The newsletter is broken down into five sections: ‘Current Developments: National & Metropolitan’; ‘Current Developments: Online’; ‘Current Developments: Community & Provincial’; ‘Newspaper History’; and ‘Recent Publications’. On the next page there is a table listing all seventy-five issues of the Australian Newspaper History Group Newsletter, the dates of issue, and the number of pages in each issue. Total number of pages so far is 1,365. Most issues comprise twenty pages. Only one has been bigger (twenty-two in March 2001). The average paging is 18.2 pages, but it has been 19.46 an issue since No. 11 (i.e. since 2001 when it became a five-times-a-year publication). Australian Newspaper History Indexed Page 5 Index Guide to using this index How organised: Page numbers play no part in this Index. Instead, the items referred to in the Index are organised by newsletter number, section number (where applicable) and item number. This is designed to facilitate electronic searching. Sections: For issue Nos. 1 to 43, the items throughout each newsletter were numbered consecutively, with no reference to sections (a typical item number would be 22.48, meaning: issue No. 22, item 48). From issue No. 44, each section of the Newsletter has been numbered and a new section was added: ‘Current Developments: Online News’. This meant there were five sections. Since then, there has been, within each section, item numbering unique to that section (a typical item number is 64.3.5, meaning: issue No. 64, section 3, item 5). Photographs: Item locators followed by p indicate photograph. Since issue No. 51, photographs have generally appeared on the cover page. Some have appeared on later pages. Abbreviations: Major abbreviations used are: ADB: Australian Dictionary of Biography; AFR: Australian Financial Review; and SMH: Sydney Morning Herald.
