JMAD New Zealand Media Ownership Report 2014 Published: 2014 December 5 Author: Merja Myllylahti This New Zealand Ownership Report 2014 is the fourth published by AUT’s Centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy (JMAD). The report finds that the New Zealand media market has failed to produce new, innovative media outlets, and that all the efforts to establish non-profit outlets have proved unsustainable. The report confirms the general findings of previous reports that New Zealand media space has remained highly commercial. It also confirms the financialisation of media ownership in the form of banks and fund managers. The report also observes that in 2014 convergence between New Zealand mass media and the communications sector generally was in full swing. Companies, such as Spark (former Telecom NZ), started to compete head-to-head with the traditional broadcasters on the online on-demand video and television markets. The American online video subscription service Netflix is entering the NZ market in March 2015. Additionally, the report notes evidence of uncomfortable alliances between citizen media, politicians, PR companies and legacy media. As Nicky Hager’s Dirty Politics book revealed, the National Party and PR practitioners used the Whale Oil blog to drive their own agendas. Also, events related to Maori TV, TVNZ and Scoop raise questions about political interference in media affairs. It is now evident that the boundaries between mainstream media, bloggers, public relations practitioners and politicians are blurring. THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE FICTION: “Dinosaurs and B.-E. M.” Page One The Age of Enlightenment brought decisive steps toward modern science, giving birth to the Scientific Revolution. During the 19th Century, the practice of science became professionalized and institutionalized, which continues to today. So, upon this stage in the 19th Century strode the “Mother of Science Fiction,” Mary Shelley (1797- 1851), whose Frankenstein of 1818 electrified the world! The promotion of the 1931 film featured a supply of smelling salts in theatre lobbies for those who might swoon! The “Co-Father of Science Fiction” was H. G. Welles (1866-1946), whose War of the Worlds of 1898, as adapted on radio by Orson Wells on Halloween, 1938, sparked a mini-panic of alien invasion terror! His The Time Machine of 1895 and The Invisible Man of 1897 became best sellers. Hints of our future were depicted by aircraft, tanks, space and time travel, nuclear weapons, satellite television, and the World-Wide Web. Page Two The other “Co-Father of Science Fiction” was the commercially-successful French author Jules Verne (1828-1905). I remember watching, with wonder, the 1954 Disney film of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, of 1870. And I remember riding on the ride in Disneyland in California in the 1950’s. The 1959 film of Journey To The Center Of The Earth, starring James Mason and an unknown Pat Boone, featured an epic battle of dinosaurs, joining Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, of 1912, and the 1993 film Jurassic Park with dinosaur themes in science fiction. -

PUBLIC VERSION FAIRFAX / NZME RESPONSE TO SUBMISSIONS 29 JULY 2016 INTRODUCTION 1. NZME Limited 1 (" NZME ") and Fairfax NZ Limited (" Fairfax ") have had the opportunity to review the public submissions to the Commerce Commission (" Commission ") in response to the Commission's Statement of Preliminary Issues dated 14 June 2016 (" SOPI ") in relation to the Fairfax / NZME application (the " Application ") seeking approval to merge the New Zealand operations of NZME and Fairfax (the "Transaction "). 2. Fairfax and NZME's responses and observations in relation to the submissions and the key points contained in them are set out below. Appendix Two also contains an overview of the recent Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2016 and The Pew Research Center State of the News Media 2016 report that reinforce the acceleration of the trends identified in the Application. SUMMARY 3. The Commission received 49 submissions in total. Once duplicated submissions from a single person / economic entity are removed, there are fewer than 40.2 This is a low number of submissions on a high-profile transaction involving media. 3 4. All the submissions were from competitors, journalists, or academics / public policy lobby groups. That is unusual when measured, for example, against the range of submissions received by the Commission on its last high profile authorisation. 4 It is however not surprising. In traditional competition analysis, if competitors are opposing, it is often an indicator that the merger will be pro-competitive,5 as the merged entity is potentially expected to provide a better offering to customers (in this case, consumers and advertisers). 5. -

On a blustery October evening inside a chapel at Green-Wood Cemetery in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, the photographer Shannon Taggart guided an audience through a series of images: a circle of hands placed atop a dimly lit table; a woman holding what appeared to be a transistor radio, listening with eyes closed; orbs flashing across a starry night sky. The photographs were from her new book, “Séance,” the result of her 18-year exploration of Spiritualism, the religious movement based on a belief in the possibility of communication between the living and the dead that emerged from New York in the 1840s. The project, which she calls “part documentary and part ghost story,” comprises her own images of Lily Dale — the world’s largest Spiritualist community, founded in the mid-19th century on the shore of Cassadaga Lake in New York — along with historical photographs, narratives about her subjects and illustrated essays by the artists Tony Oursler and Andreas Fischer about the movement’s influence on art and culture. The book is, she says, “as much about the history of photography as it is about Spiritualism.” Nonetheless, the work that forms “Séance” has been confounding photo editors for years; the images seek to neither disprove nor validate the existence of the paranormal but to visually explore human attempts to make contact with the afterlife. -
