Hume BFA, Photography & Film, May 2009, Virginia Commonwealth University A Thesis submitted to The Faculty of Columbian College of Arts and Sciences of The George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts May 15, 2011 Thesis directed by Dean Kessmann Associate Professor of Photography Siobhan Rigg Assistant Professor of New Media Abstract I’ll Believe in Anything This thesis is an extended artist statement that focuses on a body of work created within the Master of Fine Arts program at The George Washington University. My recent photographs are appropriated from U.S. government documents regarding UFOs from the mid-twentieth century, the only time in American history that the government officially studied the phenomenon. I specifically use photographs that have been degraded by mechanical reproduction and are now no longer recognizable as documentary photographs. Because of their abstract quality, I discuss the photographs in terms of visual languages that were prevalent at the time of their creation, particularly Abstract Expressionism, as well as recent developments in the discourse surrounding non- representational contemporary photography. The archival images I have selected have been slightly manipulated, emphasizing and exaggerating the visual association I have created so as to suggest a history in which American abstract art and the UFO phenomenon are figuratively intertwined. ii Table of Contents Abstract ii Table of Contents iii

Tribune Broadcasting Company, LLC April 18, 2016 SUMMARY These Reply Comments are submitted by the AM Radio Preservation Alliance (the “Alliance”) addressing those proposals in the Commission’s Further Notice of Proposed Rule Making, FCC 15-142, MB Docket No. 13-249 (the “FNPRM”) to alter interference protections for Class A AM stations and to reduce the protected daytime contours for Class B, C and D AM stations. These FNPRM proposals, and the variations thereof suggested by certain commenters, would do more harm than good, and if adopted, would undermine the efforts to revitalize the AM radio service undertaken in the Commission’s First Report and Order in this proceeding. The Alliance Comments filed in this docket submitted evidence, grounded in audience data, listener responses and engineering studies, establishing that the FNPRM proposals to protect Class A AM stations only to their 0.1 mV/m groundwave

    THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE FICTION: “Dinosaurs and B.-E. M.” Page One The Age of Enlightenment brought decisive steps toward modern science, giving birth to the Scientific Revolution. During the 19th Century, the practice of science became professionalized and institutionalized, which continues to today. So, upon this stage in the 19th Century strode the “Mother of Science Fiction,” Mary Shelley (1797- 1851), whose Frankenstein of 1818 electrified the world! The promotion of the 1931 film featured a supply of smelling salts in theatre lobbies for those who might swoon! The “Co-Father of Science Fiction” was H. G. Welles (1866-1946), whose War of the Worlds of 1898, as adapted on radio by Orson Wells on Halloween, 1938, sparked a mini-panic of alien invasion terror! His The Time Machine of 1895 and The Invisible Man of 1897 became best sellers. Hints of our future were depicted by aircraft, tanks, space and time travel, nuclear weapons, satellite television, and the World-Wide Web. Page Two The other “Co-Father of Science Fiction” was the commercially-successful French author Jules Verne (1828-1905). I remember watching, with wonder, the 1954 Disney film of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, of 1870. And I remember riding on the ride in Disneyland in California in the 1950’s. The 1959 film of Journey To The Center Of The Earth, starring James Mason and an unknown Pat Boone, featured an epic battle of dinosaurs, joining Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, of 1912, and the 1993 film Jurassic Park with dinosaur themes in science fiction.

First, a huge thank you to the more than two hundred and twenty five people from the radio and political worlds who graciously took time from their busy schedules to answer my questions. Some of them put up with repeated follow ups and nagging emails as I tried to develop an understanding of the business and its political implications. They allowed me to keep most things on the record, and provided me with an understanding that simply would not have been possible without their participation. When I began this project, I never imagined that I would interview anywhere near this many people, but now, almost five years later, I cannot imagine the project without the information gleaned from these invaluable interviews. I have been fortunate enough to receive fellowships from the Fox Leadership Program at the University of Pennsylvania and the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia, which made it far easier to complete this dissertation.
