Master of Arts, History, August, 1972, 147 pp., appendix, bibliography, 160 titles. This thesis deals with the problem of determining the reasons behind the purge conducted by various high officials in the Nazi regime on June 30-July 2, 1934. Adolf Hitler, Hermann Goring, SS leader Heinrich Himmler, and others used the purge to eliminate a sizable and influential segment of the SA leadership, under the pretext that this group was planning a coup against the Hitler regime. Also eliminated during the purge were sundry political opponents and personal rivals. Therefore, to explain Hitler's actions, one must determine whether or not there was a planned putsch against him at that time. Although party and official government documents relating to the purge were ordered destroyed by Hermann GcTring, certain materials in this category were used. Especially helpful were the Nuremberg trial records; Documents on British Foreign Policy, 1919-1939; Documents on German Foreign Policy, 1918-1945; and Foreign Relations of the United States, Diplomatic Papers, 1934. Also, first-hand accounts, contem- porary reports and essays, and analytical reports of a /1J-14 secondary nature were used in researching this topic. Many memoirs, written by people in a position to observe these events, were used as well as the reports of the American, British, and French ambassadors in the German capital.

    Trierer Leseliste Neuere deutsche Literaturwissenschaft Das Studium der Neueren deutschen Literaturwissenschaft lebt vom Vergnügen an der Lektüre und von der Lust daran, nicht nur leicht zugängliche und aktuelle, sondern auch ältere, schwer zugängliche und fremd wirkende (und vielleicht auch fremd bleibende) Werke zu lesen. Mit anderen Worten: Das Studium lebt von der Lust am Kennenlernen der Literaturgeschichte in ihrer ganzen Breite und Tiefe. Die Trierer Leseliste soll Studierenden helfen, einen besseren Überblick über die Geschichte der neueren deutschen Literatur zu erreichen. Sie ist in drei große Zeitabschnitte gegliedert „1400-1830“, „1830-1945“ und „Seit 1945/Literatur- und Kulturtheorie des 20./21. Jahrhunderts“. Die Binnengliederung dieser Zeitabschnitte folgt den geläufigen (wenn auch nicht unproblematischen) Epochenbegriffen. Die Leseliste umfasst eine Auswahl von rund 700 Titeln aus diesen 600 Jahren Literaturgeschichte. Sie ist also sehr fragmentarisch, und wer sich auch nur ein wenig in der Literaturgeschichte umgesehen hat, wird vieles vermissen, was er mit gutem Grund schätzt und für wichtig hält. Nach 1999 erschienene Literatur etwa wurde nicht mehr berücksichtigt, weil aktuelle Gegenwartsliteratur ohnehin gerne gelesen wird, aber auch weil hier eine Auswahl zu treffen besonders schwierig ist. Ferner fehlen nicht nur einige ältere, sondern auch moderne Formen und Genres, und es fehlen sogar Bereiche, die zu den Lehr- und Forschungsgebieten der Trierer Germanistik gehören, wie z.B. die sog. ‚Migrantenliteratur’. Das lässt sich nur durch den Zweck der Leseliste rechtfertigen: Es geht um eine pragmatisch gefasste Minimalliste aus den Kernbereichen der Neueren deutschen Literaturgeschichte, die sich an ausbildungs- und berufsbezogenen Schwerpunkten des Germanistikstudiums orientiert. Die Nichtaufnahme von Titeln impliziert also kein negatives Werturteil, die vorliegende Werkauswahl ist nicht als Kanon zu verstehen.

    MASCULINITY AND AMBITION IN THE BALTIC ADVENTURE By: Christian Lane Mentor: Tracey Rizzo University of North Carolina Asheville 1 The Baltic has always stood on the periphery of Europe, a land shrouded in mystery to the Western European eye. The region had fairly diverse religious practice, with variations in pagan practice existing well into the 13th century among the native Lithuanians, Latvians, and Estonians. Western crusaders looked onto the Baltic with opportunity; the lack of a centralized 1 authority among the tribes led to a power vacuum .​ Western crusaders then looked to this area ​ not only as an un-christianized place ripe for crusade but also as a place to expand their own personal influence while settling Germanic peoples. This call of German people to the Baltic would continue as a motif well into the 20th century, called the Baltikum. The German presence in the Baltic was not forgotten, and was a common topic for 19th century romanticism. In Vanguard of Nazism, Robert G. L. Waite writes “Generations of German Romanticists have ​ ​ 2 fallen under the spell of the Baltikum, and have chanted the praises of this weird land” .​ He ​ ​ ​ writes in the context of interwar Germany in the 20th century, where many were agitating for German involvement in the region. While Germany’s military was largely de-clawed by the Treaty of Versailles, the volunteer organized Freikorps, or Free Companies, were able to become involved in the region. In this way, their ill-fated “Baltic Adventure” came to represent the dangerous mixture of romanticized irredentist justification for fighting with the bruised masculinity of the losing soldiers of the First World War.

It argues that social networks and personal relationships – including family ties, religious affiliations, and sexual bonds among stormtroopers – represented the primary means of recruiting and integrating new members into the Nazi movement. The SA emphasized the social, emotional, and political benefits that young men could accrue by joining the group, which established an array of social welfare systems during the dismal days of the depression. In return for food and housing, male camaraderie, a sense of ersatz family, and the promise of social and economic integration into the local community, young stormtroopers became the Party’s foot soldiers. SA pubs and barracks were simultaneously places of refuge and sites of violence, where the stormtroopers were taught to strive for a sacrificial death that Party propagandists could use to argue for Nazi heroism, Communist criminality, and republican inability to maintain order in the German state. Hamburg’s stormtroopers claimed to defend their communities and families.

    II. Das Mordkomplott 1. Rathenau in der öffentlichen Meinung Wie Matthias Erzberger und Philipp Scheidemann repräsentierte auch Walther Rathenau die aus Kriegsniedcrlage und Revolution geborene politische Nachkriegsordnung Deutschlands. Doch darüber hinaus verband den jüdischen Großbürger und Homme de lettres wenig mit dem katholischen Berufspolitiker und dem sozialdemokratischen Arbeiterführer-bis er wie sie Opfer eines politischen Anschlags werden sollte. Der 1867 in Berlin als Sohn des Fabrikbesitzers und späteren AEG-Gründers Emil Rathenau geborene Walther hatte nach einem mit der Promotion abgeschlossenen Studium der Philosophie, Physik und Chemie eine einjährige freiwillige Militärdienstzeit bei den Berliner Gardekürassieren absolviert und anschließend nach weiterer universitärer Vorbereitung die Leitung der von der AEG neuge- gründeten Elektrochemischen Werke Bitterfeld übernommen. 1899 wechselte er ins AEG- Direktorium, wo ihm die Verantwortung über die Abteilung für Zentralstationen übertragen wurde, und trat 1902 in den Vorstand der Berliner Handels-Gesellschaft ein, der Hausbank der AEG. Rathenau setzte seine glänzende Karriere bald fort, wurde 1904 Mitglied und 1912 im sogar Vorsitzender Aufsichtsrat der AEG. Nach dem Tode seines Vaters 1915 gelang es ihm zwar nicht, zum Generaldirektor berufen zu werden, wohl aber konnte er seine Stellung als „Präsident" der AEG festigen und seinen wirtschaftlichen Einfluß durch die Wahrneh- mung einer Vielzahl von Aufsichtsratsmandaten im In- und Ausland noch ausdehnen. Nicht weniger als durch seine wirtschaftliche Tätigkeit sollte das öffentliche Bild Rathe- naus durch sein Hervortreten als Schriftsteller geprägt werden. In Maximilian Hardens Zukunft, die 1897 seinen Erstlings-Aufsatz „Höre, Israel!" abgedruckt hatte, fand der zunächst unter Pseudonym schreibende Essayist eine Plattform für eine ganze Reihe von Aufsätzen, die dann 1902 und 1908 gesammelt unter eigenem Namen als „Impressionen" und „Reflexionen" erschienen.

    EUROPEAN ELITES AND IDEAS OF EMPIRE, 1917–1957 Who thought of Europe as a community before its economic integra- tion in 1957? Dina Gusejnova illustrates how a supranational European mentality was forged from depleted imperial identities. In the revolutions of 1917–1920, the power of the Hohenzollern, Habsburg, and Romanoff dynasties over their subjects expired. Even though Germany lost its credit as a world power twice in that century, in the global cultural memory, the old Germanic families remained associated with the idea of Europe in areas reaching from Mexico to the Baltic region and India. Gusejnova’s book sheds light on a group of German-speaking intellectuals of aristocratic origin who became pioneers of Europe’s future regeneration.
