Richard Hughes worked constantly on the project for twenty-one years until his death in 1976. Myadmiration for this roman-fleuve is profound and my reading of it goes far back. While a student at Dartmouth College in 1965 I bought a copy of the first American Edition of The Fox in the Attic , signed by the author. This study has been long under way, though not quite for three de cades, and it has been written many times over. During the process, I have felt deep sympathy for Hughes's dogged perseverance at the typewriter while serving what he sometimes felt was an inescapable life sentence. My thanks are due to a large group of people in different parts of the world. Two professors of English at Lund University have been supportive of my protracted efforts. Claes Schaar and Sven Bäckman have been un commonly forbearing with a procrastinator. As my supervisor for far too many years, the latter has shown great generosity. Earlier versions of this study have been discussed at different doctorai seminars at Lund and Helsinki. Little remains of these versions, but I am thankful for all good advice freely given by their members. In particular I single out the late Sven Holmberg whose wide-ranging interests made him a good sparring partner during long discussions. Associate Professor Friedrich Voit at the University of Auckland has advised on some of the following chapters, especially those dealing with the German book market. Dr Simon Gilmour of the same Germanic De partment has been extremely generous with his time, energy and stylistic suggestions, as have Professor Alan Kirkness and Drs James Braund, Wim Hiisken, and Martin Sutton. Grant in Aid from the University of Auck land Research Fund in 1995 and the short leave that its Faculty of Arts granted me in 1997 enabled me to spend the necessary time at The Lilly Li brary, Bloomington, Indiana; for this I am grateful. Librarians on three continents have given me much needed assist ance: at the university libraries of Lund, Odense and Reading; at Auckland; and at Indiana University. I am grateful for the Visiting Fellowship from the Ball Brother Foundation that William R. Cagle, former head of The Lilly Library, kindly facilitated. To Ms Saundra Taylor, head of its manu script division, who helped me in every possible way, I extend my grati tude, as I do to Hughes's London publishers Chatto & Windus who gave me access to their archive long before it was transferred to Reading Uni versity. In letting me quote from her father's unpublished papers, Mrs. Pe nelope Minney, as executrix of Richard Hughes' s literary estate, has shown more kindness than I could ever have hoped for. Without her and her sib lings' generosity this study could, quite literally, never have been written in its present form. Foremost: this book is for Ingwor, Jytte and Jenny, with feelings of gratitude beyond all words; and for A-L in memoriam. Auckland, New Zealand, September 1999. 7 Introduction "My most recent book, 'The Fox in the Attic', is about Hitler and Ger many." This is how Richard Hughes, interviewed by The New Yorker in 1969, summarised the first volume in his projected series of novels The Human Predieament. Obviously an oversimplification and perhaps in tended as a selling line for his American audience eight years after the book had appeared, his summary still contains more than a few grains of truth. The book and its sequel, The Wooden Shepherdess, are indeed novels about Hitler and Germany. Despite the array of other characters and other localities that fill the eight hundred published pages, many readers remember the fictionalised Fiihrer and the Bavarian scenes the best,! The present study of Richard Hughes's sources takes in the main the same lim ited view; the non-German characters and chapters are to a large degree deliberately disregarded. To the best of my knowledge, what follows is the first concerted effort to analyse and comment on the intricate relations between Richard Hughes's The Human Predieament project and its sources, as far as its chapters set in Germany or touching on German affairs are concerned. As many of these sources as possible have been listed, after a lengthy search of the two major hol dings of his papers, one of them in America, the other one in England. So far, these archives have attracted remarkably little in terest from Hughes scholars. In actual fact, only his biographer, Richard Perceval Graves, seems to have made more consistent use of the larger of the two holdings, the American one, and then with his interest focussed more on the author's life than on his work. Another scholar, Paul Mor gan, has made excellent use of the more limited British hol ding. However, neither Morgan nor Graves has consulted both archives, nor has anyone else, as far as I am aware. The German background has not attracted much critical attention either. With the exception of some shorter articles and essays listed below, nothing has been written on the specific topic of Rich ard Hughes's two last novels in relation to the sources for their German episodes. 1 Sometirnes they have been encouraged to do so by the publishers. The dust-jacket of the original edition of The Wooden Shepherdess (Chatto & Windus) has Ree, the American teenage girl, in focus, but Hitler's ghostlike face can be seen in the background. The Pen guin paperback edition of both novels (1975) displays German military insignia, including eagles and swastikas, prominently ffi their front covers, while the Harvill Press edition of The Wooden Shepherdess (1995), the only one to inc!ude The Twelve Chapters, has Paul Herrmann's heroic Nazi painting "The March of 1942" on its cover. 9 There were many enigmas and paradoxes in the life and work of Rich ard Hughes, one of them the great discrepancy between what he wrote and what he eventually published. Not many novelists of his high literary sta tus2 have written so few novels; even fewer have produced more manu script pages. The staggering amount of his unpublished and discarded ma terial is evident only to someone who makes a elose study of his archive. It was bought by the Lilly Library at Indiana University in 1973, with material concerning Hughes's work-in-progress later added. Weil into the next de cade it remained unsorted and inaccessible.3 That no longer being the case, it still has not attracted the scholarly attention it deserves. Anyone prepared to engage in that very time-consuming but reward ing activity will have her or his views of Hughes as an unproductive and procrastinating writer overturned. The present study relies predominantly on research in the unpublished material held in Bloomington, but it is also based on research into the correspondence between Hughes and his British publishers Chatto & Windus, a collection that is now part of the University of Reading Library.

Starring Hitler! Adolf Hitler as the Main Character in Twentieth-First Century French Fiction Abstract Adolf Hitler has remained a prominent figure in popular culture, often portrayed as either the personification of evil or as an object of comedic ridicule. Although Hitler has never belonged solely to history books, testimonials, or documentaries, he has recently received a great deal of attention in French literary fiction. This article reviews three recent French novels by established authors: La part de l’autre (The Alternate Hypothesis) by Emmanuel Schmitt, Lui (Him) by Patrick Besson and La jeunesse mélancolique et très désabusée d’Adolf Hitler (Adolf Hitler’s Depressed and Very Disillusioned Youth) by Michel Folco; all of which belong to the Twenty-First Century French literary trend of focusing on Second World War perpetrators instead of their victims.

While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. « The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing pega(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image.

THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS By James E. Geels, B. A. Denton, Texas August, 1975 Geels, James E., The German-American Bund: Fifth Column or Deutschtum? Master of Arts (History), August, 1975, 183 pp., bibliography, 140 titles. Although the German-American Bund received extensive press coverage during its existence and monographs of American politics in the 1930's refer to the Bund's activities, there has been no thorough examination of the charge that the Bund was a fifth column organization responsible to German authorities. This six-chapter study traces the Bund's history with an emphasis on determining the motivation of Bundists and the nature of the relationship between the Bund and the Third Reich. The conclusions are twofold. First, the Third Reich repeatedly discouraged the Bundists and attempted to dissociate itself from the Bund. Second, the Bund's commitment to Deutschtum through its endeavors to assist the German nation and the Third Reich contributed to American hatred of National Socialism. • A Historiography of World War II Era Propaganda Films
Essays in History Volume 51 (2018) A Just Estimate of a Lie: A Historiography of World War II Era Propaganda Films Christopher Maiytt Western Michigan University Introduction Heroes and monsters have reared their heads on celluloid in every corner of the globe, either to conquer and corrupt or to defend wholesome peace. Others grasp at a future they believe they have been denied. Such were the tales of World War II-era propaganda flms and since their release, they have been at turns examined, defended, and vilifed by American and British historians. Racism, sentiments of isolationism, political and social context, and developments in historical schools of thought have worked to alter historical interpretations of this subject matter. Four periods of historical study: 1960s postwar Orthodox reactions to the violence and tension of the war-period, the revisionist works of 1970s social historians, 1990s Postmodernism, and recent historical scholarship focused on popular culture and memory- have all provided signifcant input on WWII-era propaganda flm studies. Each was affected by previous historical ideologies and concurrent events to shape their fnal products. Economic history, lef-leaning liberal ideology, cultural discourse, and women’s studies have also added additional insight into the scholarly interpretations of these flms. Tere is no decisive historiography of WWII propaganda studies and there is even less organized work on the historical value of propaganda flms. My research is intended as a humble effort to examine the most prolifc period of global propaganda flm production and how the academic world has remembered, revered, and reviled it since. Tis historiographical work is not intended to be an exhaustive review of every flm or scholarly insight offered on the subject.

American Intelligence and the Question of Hitler’s Death Undergraduate Research Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with honors research distinction in History in the Undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University by Kelsey Mullen The Ohio State University November 2014 Project Advisor: Professor Alice Conklin, Department of History Project Mentor: Doctoral Candidate Sarah K. Douglas, Department of History American Intelligence and the Question of Hitler’s Death 2 Introduction The fall of Berlin marked the end of the European theatre of the Second World War. The Red Army ravaged the city and laid much of it to waste in the early days of May 1945. A large portion of Hitler’s inner circle, including the Führer himself, had been holed up in the Führerbunker underneath the old Reich Chancellery garden since January of 1945. Many top Nazi Party officials fled or attempted to flee the city ruins in the final moments before their destruction at the Russians’ hands. When the dust settled, the German army’s capitulation was complete. There were many unanswered questions for the Allies of World War II following the Nazi surrender. Invading Russian troops, despite recovering Hitler’s body, failed to disclose this fact to their Allies when the battle ended. In September of 1945, Dick White, the head of counter intelligence in the British zone of occupation, assigned a young scholar named Hugh Trevor- Roper to conduct an investigation into Hitler’s last days in order to refute the idea the Russians promoted and perpetuated that the Führer had escaped.1 Major Trevor-Roper began his investigation on September 18, 1945 and presented his conclusions to the international press on November 1, 1945.

  • The Mind of Adolf Hitler: a Study in the Unconscious Appeal of Contempt
[Expositions 5.2 (2011) 111-125] Expositions (online) ISSN: 1747-5376 The Mind of Adolf Hitler: A Study in the Unconscious Appeal of Contempt EDWARD GREEN Manhattan School of Music How did the mind of Adolf Hitler come to be so evil? This is a question which has been asked for decades – a question which millions of people have thought had no clear answer. This has been the case equally with persons who dedicated their lives to scholarship in the field. For example, Alan Bullock, author of Hitler: A Study in Tyranny, and perhaps the most famous of the biographers of the Nazi leader, is cited in Ron Rosenbaum’s 1998 book, Explaining Hitler, as saying: “The more I learn about Hitler, the harder I find it to explain” (in Rosenbaum 1998, vii). In the same text, philosopher Emil Fackenheim agrees: “The closer one gets to explicability the more one realizes nothing can make Hitler explicable” (in Rosenbaum 1998, vii).1 Even an author as keenly perceptive and ethically bold as the Swiss philosopher Max Picard confesses in his 1947 book, Hitler in Ourselves, that ultimately he is faced with a mystery.2 The very premise of his book is that somehow the mind of Hitler must be like that of ourselves. But just where the kinship lies, precisely how Hitler’s unparalleled evil and the everyday workings of our own minds explain each other – in terms of a central principle – the author does not make clear. Our Deepest Debate I say carefully, as a dispassionate scholar but also as a person of Jewish heritage who certainly would not be alive today had Hitler succeeded in his plan for world conquest, that the answer Bullock, Fackenheim, and Picard were searching for can be found in the work of the great American philosopher Eli Siegel.3 First famed as a poet, Siegel is best known now for his pioneering work in the field of the philosophy of mind.4 He was the founder of Aesthetic Realism.5 In keeping with its name, this philosophy begins with a consideration of strict ontology.

  • Another Fairy Tale by August Kubizek
Hitler the composer of an opera? Another fairy tale by August Kubizek © Bart FM Droog, Droog Magazine, www.droog-mag.nl, March 4, 2020 Again another spectaculair Hitler related finding has caused a worldwide media storm: a fragment of an opera allegedly composed by the 19 year old Hitler in 1908: “Wieland der Schmied” (Wieland the Smith). It can be seen at the Young Hitler exhibition in the Museum Niederösterreich, St. Pölten, Austria. Opening fragment of the music sheet, titled “Wieland Vorspiel” nach Motiven von Adolf Hitler, aufgezeichnet von August Kubizek. © Legacy August Kubizek in cooperation with the DÖW The sheet music originates from the legacy of August Kubizek (1888-1956), who was befriended with Hitler in 1906-1908. Yet, in 1938 Kubizek wrote: “My friend took my transcripts of this music with him [when Hitler moved out of their common room, autumn 1908]. To my great dismay I possess none of it. It is just as unfortunate that I have so completely forgotten this music, that I can't reconstruct it from memory. What an infinitely valuable cultural document it would be if these pages were found today, and the musical ideas of Adolf Hitler from 1908 were to be reborn. Unfortunately my friend never handed me these sheets, otherwise they would be mine, just as the other memorabilia Hitler the composer? Droog Magazine, March 3, 2020. page 1/4 from this time I've kept [a few letters, postcards and sketches]. (...) The creative power of this man is invincible and all-round. I really do not know in which area my friend would not have been completely universal at that time.”1 This followed after three pages in which he described that Hitler was too impatient to do finger exercises needed to play the piano and that Hitler couldn't read musical notation.
