Weldments are structural members defined by a cross section picked from a library and a sketch line to define its length. This sketch line can be from multiple 2D sketches, or a single 3D sketch. By using two layout sketches (side and plan elevations), you can control the 3D sketch easily and any future changes will be reflected in your airframe. The layout sketches capture the design intent and the dimensions of the finished frame. 1. Open a New Part, verify Units are inches, and Save As “Airframe” (Top Menu / File / Save As). -

Introduction: An aircraft is a device that is used for, or is intended to be used for, flight in the air. Major categories of aircraft are airplane, rotorcraft, glider, and lighter-than-air vehicles. Each of these may be divided further by major distinguishing features of the aircraft, such as airships and balloons. Both are lighter-than-air aircraft but have differentiating features and are operated differently. The concentration of this handbook is on the airframe of aircraft; specifically, the fuselage, booms, nacelles, cowlings, fairings, airfoil surfaces, and landing gear. Also included are the various accessories and controls that accompany these structures. Note that the rotors of a helicopter are considered part of the airframe since they are actually rotating wings. By contrast, propellers and rotating airfoils of an engine on an airplane are not considered part of the airframe. The most common aircraft is the fixed-wing aircraft. As the name implies, the wings on this type of flying machine are attached to the fuselage and are not intended to move independently in a fashion that results in the creation of lift. One, two, or three sets of wings have all been successfully utilized. Rotary-wing aircraft such as helicopters are also widespread. This handbook discusses features and maintenance aspects common to both fixed wing and rotary-wing categories of aircraft. -

Journal of Military and Strategic VOLUME 14, ISSUE 1, FALL 2011 Studies A Stepping Stone to Success: Operation Battleaxe (June 1941) and the Development of the British Tactical Air Doctrine Mike Bechthold On 16 February 1943 a meeting was held in Tripoli attended by senior American and British officers to discuss the various lessons learned during the Libyan campaign. The focus of the meeting was a presentation by General Bernard Montgomery. This "gospel according to Montgomery," as it was referred to by Air Chief Marshal Arthur Tedder, set out very clearly Monty's beliefs on how air power should be used to support the army.1 Among the tenets Montgomery articulated was his conviction of the importance of air power: "Any officer who aspires to hold high command in war must understand clearly certain principles regarding the use of air power." Montgomery also believed that flexibility was the greatest asset of air power. This allowed it to be applied as a "battle-winning factor of the first importance." As well, he fully endorsed the air force view of centralized control: "Nothing could be more fatal to successful results than to dissipate the air resource into small packets placed under the control of army formation commanders, with each packet working on its own plan. The soldier must not expect, or wish, to exercise direct command over air striking forces." Operation Market Garden WWII
Operation Market Garden WWII Operation Market Garden (17–25 September 1944) was an Allied military operation, fought in the Netherlands and Germany in the Second World War. It was the largest airborne operation up to that time. The operation plan's strategic context required the seizure of bridges across the Maas (Meuse River) and two arms of the Rhine (the Waal and the Lower Rhine) as well as several smaller canals and tributaries. Crossing the Lower Rhine would allow the Allies to outflank the Siegfried Line and encircle the Ruhr, Germany's industrial heartland. It made large-scale use of airborne forces, whose tactical objectives were to secure a series of bridges over the main rivers of the German- occupied Netherlands and allow a rapid advance by armored units into Northern Germany. Initially, the operation was marginally successful and several bridges between Eindhoven and Nijmegen were captured. However, Gen. Horrocks XXX Corps ground force's advance was delayed by the demolition of a bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal, as well as an extremely overstretched supply line, at Son, delaying the capture of the main road bridge over the Meuse until 20 September. At Arnhem, the British 1st Airborne Division encountered far stronger resistance than anticipated. In the ensuing battle, only a small force managed to hold one end of the Arnhem road bridge and after the ground forces failed to relieve them, they were overrun on 21 September. The rest of the division, trapped in a small pocket west of the bridge, had to be evacuated on 25 September. The Allies had failed to cross the Rhine in sufficient force and the river remained a barrier to their advance until the offensives at Remagen, Oppenheim, Rees and Wesel in March 1945. -
Twenty-Five Years Ahead of Its Time: the American Aerial Torpedo in World War I
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AHEAD OF ITS TIME: THE AMERICAN AERIAL TORPEDO IN WORLD WAR I Michael H. Taint, Lt. Colonel, USAF (Ret) Independent Scholar To the modern-day public, no weapon system is more evocative of American high technology than the “drone” or, more formally, the “Unmanned Aerial System” (UAS) or “Remotely Piloted Aircraft” (RPA). UASs in the last two decades have been deployed extensively through southwest Asia and appear almost daily in news reports. Few realize they were pioneered a century ago and nearly took their place alongside the tank, submarine, chemical weapons and fighter aircraft as an important technological breakthrough of World War I. This paper explores the development and testing of the first American drone. Developed in Dayton, Ohio, this “aerial torpedo” (also called an “automatic carrier” or “flying bomb”) was created by automotive innovator Charles F. “Boss” Kettering and nicknamed, in his honor, the “Kettering Bug.” Along with Kettering, important future actors in American military airpower such as General of the Air Force Henry “Hap” Arnold and James Doolittle of “Doolittle’s Raiders” were also involved in this secret development project, probably the first of its kind in Air Force history. Like most projects pushing the limits of the state of the art, the Kettering Bug was hampered by technical challenges; however, the project showed how breakthroughs can be achieved when a small group of accomplished technical experts are brought together on a complex task and allowed to seek creative solutions. Theirs was no small accomplishment. Looking back on the project, General “Hap” Arnold’s assessment was: The Bug was twenty five years ahead of its time.
