APPENDIX C3: Design of Seaplanes This appendix is a part of the book General Aviation Aircraft Design: Applied Methods and Procedures by Snorri Gudmundsson, published by Elsevier, Inc. The book is available through various bookstores and online retailers, such as www.elsevier.com, www.amazon.com, and many others. The purpose of the appendices denoted by C1 through C5 is to provide additional information on the design of selected aircraft configurations, beyond what is possible in the main part of Chapter 4, Aircraft Conceptual Layout. Some of the information is intended for the novice engineer, but other is advanced and well beyond what is possible to present in undergraduate design classes. This way, the appendices can serve as a refresher material for the experienced aircraft designer, while introducing new material to the student. Additionally, many helpful design philosophies are presented in the text. Since this appendix is offered online rather than in the actual book, it is possible to revise it regularly and both add to the information and new types of aircraft. The following appendices are offered: C1 – Design of Conventional Aircraft C2 – Design of Canard Aircraft C3 – Design of Seaplanes (this appendix) C4 – Design of Sailplanes C5 – Design of Unusual Configurations Figure C3-1: A Lake LA-250 Renegade, shown here during climb after T-O, is a popular option for amphibious aircraft. The large deflected flap on the horizontal tail is a hydraulically actuated trim tab used for slow speed operations only. ELECTRONIC WARFARE FUNDAMENTALS NOVEMBER 2000 PREFACE Electronic Warfare Fundamentals is a student supplementary text and reference book that provides the foundation for understanding the basic concepts underlying electronic warfare (EW). This text uses a practical building-block approach to facilitate student comprehension of the essential subject matter associated with the combat applications of EW. Since radar and infrared (IR) weapons systems present the greatest threat to air operations on today's battlefield, this text emphasizes radar and IR theory and countermeasures. Although command and control (C2) systems play a vital role in modern warfare, these systems are not a direct threat to the aircrew and hence are not discussed in this book. This text does address the specific types of radar systems most likely to be associated with a modern integrated air defense system (lADS). To introduce the reader to EW, Electronic Warfare Fundamentals begins with a brief history of radar, an overview of radar capabilities, and a brief introduction to the threat systems associated with a typical lADS. The two subsequent chapters introduce the theory and characteristics of radio frequency (RF) energy as it relates to radar operations. These are followed by radar signal characteristics, radar system components, and radar target discrimination capabilities. The book continues with a discussion of antenna types and scans, target tracking, and missile guidance techniques. The next step in the building-block approach is a detailed description of countermeasures designed to defeat radar systems. The text presents the theory and employment considerations for both noise and deception jamming techniques and their impact on radar systems. -

Air Force Next-Generation Bomber: Background and Issues for Congress Jeremiah Gertler Specialist in Military Aviation December 22, 2009 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov RL34406 CRS Report for Congress Prepared for Members and Committees of Congress Air Force Next-Generation Bomber: Background and Issues for Congress Summary As part of its proposed FY2010 defense budget, the Administration proposed deferring the start of a program to develop a next-generation bomber (NGB) for the Air Force, pending the completion of the 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) and associated Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), and in light of strategic arms control negotiations with Russia. The Administration’s proposed FY2010 budget requested no funding specifically identified in public budget documents as being for an NGB program. Prior to the submission of the FY2010 budget, the Air Force was conducting research and development work aimed at fielding a next-generation bomber by 2018. Although the proposed FY2010 defense budget proposed deferring the start of an NGB program, the Secretary of Defense and Air Force officials in 2009 have expressed support for the need to eventually start such a program. The Air Force’s FY2010 unfunded requirements list (URL)—a list of programs desired by the Air Force but not funded in the Air Force’s proposed FY2010 budget—includes a classified $140-million item that some press accounts have identified as being for continued work on a next-generation bomber. For three weeks in September 2017, Memorial’s newest folklore graduate students arriving from Northern Ontario, all parts of the United States, Iran, and Israel, were transplanted to Bay Roberts to participate in a cultural documentation field school: a required course that takes place at the start of the first semester of the graduate program. The field school participants were warmly welcomed by local residents, and this booklet is both a “give back” to the community, as well as a product of what the students learned. The academic goals of the field school are for students to learn first-hand about cultural documentation: techniques of audio-recorded interviewing, ethnographic observation, writing fieldnotes, documentary photography, video-recording, organizing and archiving field data, analysing field data, and public presentation skills. In addition to skills and techniques, students learn to work in teams, to meet new people, and to recognize local traditions and culture— this is at the heart of folklore fieldwork. The warmth with which we were welcomed to Bay Roberts—from the very first day was a highlight. It was a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon, but students enjoyed the “Toutons and Tunes” walking tour, which ended in the Red Shed (a special place indeed!) with tea, toutons, scrunchions, crab legs, and traditional tunes—what a delicious introduction! Over the course of the next three weeks, students were invited into people’s homes, where they shared cups of tea, baked goods, 4 and stories. -

The rise of the FPU ushered in a new era of class politics. But fishermen were divided in their support for the union; Irish-Catholic fishermen have long been seen as at the periphery—or entirely outside—of the FPU’s fold. Appeals to ethno- religious unity among Irish Catholics contributed to their ambivalence about or opposition to the union. Yet, many Irish Catholics chose to support the FPU. In fact, the historical record shows Irish Catholics demonstrating a range of attitudes towards the union: some joined and remained, some joined and then left, and others rejected the union altogether. -
