Eisenhower Library While the 1940s may conjure up images of "Rosie the Riveter" and women growing produce in their Victory Gardens on the homefront, the 1950s may be characterized as the era of June Cleaver and Harriet Nelson--women comfortable in the roles of mother and wife in the suburban neighborhoods of that era. The public statements concerning women's issues made by President Dwight D. Eisenhower show him to be a paradox: "...we look to the women of our land to start education properly among all our citizens. We look to them, I think, as the very foundation--the greatest workmen in the field of spiritual development...We have come a long ways in recognizing the equality of women. Unfortunately, in some respects, it is not yet complete. But I firmly believe it will soon be so." (Remarks at the College of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington, October 18, 1956) "I cannot imagine a greater responsibility, a greater opportunity than falls to the lot of the woman who is the central figure in the home. They, far more than the men, remind us of the values of decency, of fair play, of rightness, of our own self-respect--and respecting ourselves always ready to respect others. The debt that all men owe to women is not merely that through women we are brought forth on this world, it is because they have done far more than we have to sustain and teach those ideals that make our kind of life worth while." Jacqueline Cochran acqueline Cochran is one of the most famous women in aviation history. She learned to y in only J three weeks. She later broke an existing altitude record by ying a biplane to 33,000 feet in the air. Jacqueline became very interested in air racing and participated in several races including the Bendix Cross Country Air Race. She had to convince Mr. Bendix to allow her to y since the race had been open to men pilots only. She won the race in 1937. Jacqueline also won speed records for ying. The most famous record she holds for speed was when she became the rst woman to break the sound barrier in 1953. Each Newsletter brings us closer to our being able to meet face to face and we shouldn’t forget a most important aspect of our group, like all U3A groups, is meeting like-minded friends sharing a cup of coffee whilst exchanging thoughts and knowledge openly in a room together. We are getting there. One heartening aspect of lockdown and Zoom is the size of the audience attracted to our talks. We have regularly greeted over fifty attendees, more than twice the signed-up members of the group, and many new faces are becoming old friends. Thank you. These figures augur well for our future and we hope that our ‘old friends’ will remain just that and join our face-to-face meetings. You will at least be able to see that George, Jim, Mike and I have legs and we are not just talking heads! What are our future meeting plans? 08__MURNANE.DOC 6/18/2007 3:03 PM LEGAL IMPEDIMENTS TO SERVICE: WOMEN IN THE MILITARY AND THE RULE OF LAW LINDA STRITE MURNANE* PREAMBLE Since our nation’s birth, women have been engaged in the national defense in various ways. This article will examine the legal impediments to service by women in the United States military. This brings to light an interesting assessment of the meaning of the term “Rule of Law,” as the legal exclusions barring women from service, establishing barriers to equality and creating a type of legal glass ceiling to preclude promotion, all fell within the then-existing Rule of Law in the United States. Finally, this article looks at the remaining barriers to women in the military and reasons to open all fields and all opportunities to women in today’s military. I. THE CONCEPT OF THE RULE OF LAW Albert Venn Dicey, in “Law of the Constitution,” identified three principles which establish the Rule of Law: (1) the absolute supremacy or predominance of regular law as opposed to the influence of arbitrary power; (2) equality before the law or the equal subjection of all classes to the ordinary law of the land administered by the ordinary courts; and (3) the law of the constitution is a consequence of the rights of individuals as defined and enforced by the courts.1 This concept of the Rule of Law has existed since the beginning of the nation, most famously reflected in the writings of John Adams in drafting the * Colonel, USAF, Ret. USAF NC (Ret) At the time of the Vietnam War military women Because women had no military obligation, in the United States Air Force fell into three either legal or implied, all who joined the Air categories:female members of the Air Force Nurse Force during the war were true volunteers in Corps (AFNC) and Bio-medical Science Corps every sense. Most were willing to serve (BSC), all of whom were offlcers. All others, wherever they were needed. But when the first offlcers and en-listed women, were identified as American troops began to deploy to the war in WAF, an acronym (since discarded) that stood for Vietnam, the Air Force had no plans to send its Women in the Air Force. In recognition of the fact military women. Katz* Introduction Among the more significant impacts of the 1991 War in the Persian Gulf is the altered image of women in the armed forces. The word "image" is carefully chosen. For years, women have held numerous positions in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, many in non-traditional fields. But with the Gulf War, the American public saw for the first time the widespread partici- pation of women in warfare. This was a TV war, and on television Americans saw women shipping out with their units and hefting sandbags in the desert. Eleven women were killed in the Gulf, five of them in action, and two were taken prisoner of war.' Fathers sent their daughters, husbands their wives, off to war. These were powerful images, at odds with the nation's understanding of the legal and social status of women and men. As a result, the Gulf War will ultimately alter the legal status of military women. -

“STOWAWAY” BY BETTY DREWRY (Served in ATA from 02/06/1942 to 17/01/1945) Elizabeth Drewry Recollections (The Stowaway) [2013.35.2.1] FOREWORD BY CHRISTOPHER DREWRY (Betty’s half-brother) In November 1943 a 24 year old English girl hit the headlines of the national and international press. In the years immediately preceding the Second World War she had received a comfortable and privileged upbringing and had started a career as a ballet dancer but from the outbreak of war she had been desperately trying to learn to fly so that she could contribute to the war effort by becoming a female pilot ferrying military aircraft for the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA). Every conceivable form of prevarication, bureaucracy and discrimination had been applied to frustrate her attempts to secure a flying course in Britain but she was determined not to be beaten. She had become an aviation mechanic servicing Liberator bombers while she waited in vain for the promised flying training which never materialised. Finally her frustration boiled over and, hearing that the prospects for being trained to fly were better on the other side of the Atlantic, she stowed away one night in the nose-wheel of a bomber leaving Scotland and climbed out into a hangar at Montreal, Canada 19 hours later. The first anyone knew about it at home was when the press descended onto her parents’ doorstep. Having managed to avoid deportation by the skin of her teeth, she succeeded in working her way across Canada and, after appealing to no less a person than President Roosevelt’s wife, into America where she eventually acquired a civil pilot’s licence.
