Smith ©2008 Elana Passman ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ELANA PASSMAN The Cultivation of Friendship: French and German Cultural Cooperation, 1925-1954 (under the direction of Donald M. Reid) Through a series of case studies of French-German friendship societies, this dissertation investigates the ways in which activists in France and Germany battled the dominant strains of nationalism to overcome their traditional antagonism. It asks how the Germans and the French recast their relationship as “hereditary enemies” to enable them to become partners at the heart of today’s Europe. Looking to the transformative power of civic activism, it examines how journalists, intellectuals, students, industrialists, and priests developed associations and lobbying groups to reconfigure the French-German dynamic through cultural exchanges, bilingual or binational journals, conferences, lectures, exhibits, and charitable ventures. As a study of transnational cultural relations, this dissertation focuses on individual mediators along with the networks and institutions they developed; it also explores the history of the idea of cooperation. Attempts at rapprochement in the interwar period proved remarkably resilient in the face of the prevalent nationalist spirit. While failing to override hostilities and sustain peace, the campaign for cooperation adopted a new face in the misguided shape of collaborationism during the Second World War. -

Der andere Pabst Anmerkungen zur G. W. Pabst-Retrospektive der Berliner Filmfestspiele Thomas Brandlmeier, epd Film, Nr. 05, 1997 Die letzte große Pabst-Retrospektive hierzulande wurde 1963/64 von Rudolf Joseph im Münchner Filmmuseum gezeigt. Seither gab es immer wieder kleinere Retrospektiven mit dem Kanon der Meisterwerke, "Die Büchse der Pandora", "Die freudlose Gasse", "Tagebuch einer Verlorenen, "Geheimnisse einer Seele", "Kameradschaft", dann und wann auch noch "Die Liebe der Jeanne Ney", "Westfront 1918", "L'Atlantide", "Abwege", "Der Schatz", "Die 3-Groschen-Oper", "Du haut en bas", "Skandal um Eva", "Don Quichotte", "Die weisse Hölle von Piz Palü". Das sind im wesentlichen die Filme, die unter den Oberbegriff "Pabst – späte 20er Jahre – Neue Sachlichkeit" fallen. Dazu ein bißchen Frühwerk und französische Periode. Der Rest – schamhaft verschwiegen. Die Fallhöhe zwischen "Die Büchse der Pandora" (1928/29) – in meinen Augen der ultimative Pabst-Film – und, sagen wir, "Rosen für Bettina" (1955/56) ist in der Tat gewaltig. Gemessen an der Flut von Filmbüchern, Retrospektiven und filmhistorischen Forschungs- und Rekonstruktionsarbeiten zum Werk von Murnau und Lang ist Pabst, anerkanntermaßen die Nummer Drei der deutschen Filmgeschichte, ziemlich vernachlässigt. So gesehen füllt diese Berliner Gesamt-Retrospektive der Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek eine große Lücke. Rekonstruktionsarbeit Je stärker der Zerstörungsgrad eines Werks ist, desto drastischer sind die Dejà-vu- Effekte der besonderen Art. "Die Büchse der Pandora" (1928/29) und "Die freudlose Gasse" (1925), in Berlin in rekonstruierten Fassungen vorgestellt, kursieren, vor allem infolge von Zensureingriffen, in höchst unterschiedlichen Versionen. "Immer-wieder- Schreiben einer längst beendeten, zur Unzufriedenheit beendeten Arbeit – dieses Revenanthafte also bezeichnet die höchste Steigerung des Dejà vu nach Seite seines Versäumnis-Choks", schreibt Ernst Bloch. -

Stehr Only when all aspects of the German film industry of the 1920's have been fully analyzed and understood will "Weimar film" be truly comprehensible. Once this has been achieved the study of this phenomenon will fulfill its po- tential and provide accurate insights into the Weimar era. Ambitious psychoanalytic studies of Weimar film as well as general filmographies are useful sources on Wei- mar film, but the accessible works are also incomplete and even misleading. Theories about Weimar culture, about the group mind of Weimar, have been expounded, for example, which are based on limited rather than exhaustive studies of Weimar film. Yet these have nonetheless dominated the literature because no counter theories have been put forth. Both the deficiencies of the secondary literature and the nature of the topic under study--the film media--neces- sitate that attention be focused on the films themselves if the mysteries of the Weimar screenare to be untangled and accurately analyzed. Unfortunately the remnants of Weimar film available today are not perfectsources of information and not even firsthand accounts in othersour- ces on content and quality are reliable. However, these sources--the films and firsthand accounts of them--remain to be fully explored. They must be fully explored if the study of Weimar film is ever to advance. -

More specifically, it tells the story of his refuge from Bessarabia to Romania, of his run from Romania’s secret police (Securitate) and of his years of incarceration as a political prisoner for alleged ties to the Legionary Movement, known for its Fascist, paramilitary and anti-Semitic activity and rhetoric. -

Master of Arts, History, August, 1972, 147 pp., appendix, bibliography, 160 titles. This thesis deals with the problem of determining the reasons behind the purge conducted by various high officials in the Nazi regime on June 30-July 2, 1934. Adolf Hitler, Hermann Goring, SS leader Heinrich Himmler, and others used the purge to eliminate a sizable and influential segment of the SA leadership, under the pretext that this group was planning a coup against the Hitler regime. Also eliminated during the purge were sundry political opponents and personal rivals. Therefore, to explain Hitler's actions, one must determine whether or not there was a planned putsch against him at that time. Although party and official government documents relating to the purge were ordered destroyed by Hermann GcTring, certain materials in this category were used. Especially helpful were the Nuremberg trial records; Documents on British Foreign Policy, 1919-1939; Documents on German Foreign Policy, 1918-1945; and Foreign Relations of the United States, Diplomatic Papers, 1934. Also, first-hand accounts, contem- porary reports and essays, and analytical reports of a /1J-14 secondary nature were used in researching this topic. Many memoirs, written by people in a position to observe these events, were used as well as the reports of the American, British, and French ambassadors in the German capital. -

The intention of this thesis is not to define fascism. Rather, it is to suggest that looking at fascism’s goals and aspirations might reveal under-examined elements of fascism. This thesis shows that a useful way to analyse the ideology of fascism is through an examination of its ideals and goals, and by considering the nature of a hypothetical fascist utopia. The most common ways of examining fascism and attempting to isolate its core ideological features have been by considering it culturally, looking at the metaphysical and philosophical claims fascists made about themselves, or by studying fascist regimes, looking at the external features of fascist movements, parties and governments. In existing studies there is an unspoken middle ground, where fascism could be examined by considering practical issues in the abstract and by postulating what a fascist utopia would be like. -

It introduces recent scholarship and continuing debates on the nature of fascism as well as often contentious con- tributions by foreign historians and political scientists.
