Zdanie, którym rozpoczyna E.L. Grasmiick swą pracę poświęconą wygnaniu, mogłoby z pewnością powtórzyć wielu autorów. W szczególny może sposób jest ono praw­ dziwe w odniesieniu do tematu niniejszej pracy. Zagadnieniem przesiedleń zainte­ resowała mnie przed laty Iza Bieżuńska-Małowist, która sama myślała niegdyś o podjęciu tego tematu, choć, jak powtarzała nieraz, gdy moje badania zaczęły przy­ bierać bardziej realny kształt, zamierzała pójść „w nieco innym kierunku". W gruncie rzeczy w obecnej postaci praca jest odległa również od mojego pier­ wotnego zamiaru, jakim była analiza przesiedleń w okresie hellenistycznym. Już na etapie kwerendy źródłowej, której celem było określenie rozmiarów zjawiska w okresie klasycznym, okazało się, że źródła poświęcają mu więcej uwagi, aniżeli wynikałoby ze stanu badań. W rezultacie wstęp do pracy o przesiedleniach w okresie hellenistycznym rozrósł się do rozmiarów osobnej monografii. W trakcie kweren­ dy źródłowej okazało się ponadto, że w rzeczywistości greckiej ogromną rolę od­ grywały ściśle związane z przesiedleniami, często nawet trudne do oddzielenia w źródłach, wysiedlenia i ucieczki ludności w czasie wojny. Świadomość potrzeby ich łącznego potraktowania znalazła wyraz w ostatecznym kształcie pracy. Najo­ gólniej rzecz biorąc jej tematem sa losy polis, która w wyniku działania czynni­ ków zewnętrznych przejściowo lub na stałe przestała być polis (polis apolis) (Ai- sch. Eum. 457). Omawianym zagadnieniem nie zajmowano się dotąd w nauce wcale, albo zaj­ mowano się pobieżnie, zwykle na marginesie innych badań. Jest to więc pierwsza praca poświęcona w całości przesiedleniom i wysiedleniom w świecie greckim. Pro­ blemy w niej omawiane pojawiają się wprawdzie w dwóch pracach doktorskich powstałych w języku niemieckim, Kurta Telschowa i Fritza Brunnera, ale grze­ chem obydwu, nie jedynym niestety, jest pomieszanie materii, wynikające z nie- rozdzielania zjawisk tak różnych, jak wygnanie przeciwników politycznych, grup i jednostek, w wyniku stasis oraz wysiedleń, przesiedleń i ucieczek stanowiących następstwo polemos. O ile obydwie prace są cytowane w literaturze przedmiotu, o tyle, nieco lepsza węgierska praca doktorska S. von Szâdeczkiego-Kardossa, opu­ blikowana w języku niemieckim, jest całkowicie ignorowana. Głównego grzechu 5 wszystkich trzech wymienionych autorów nie uniknął również Jakob Seibert, au­ tor dużej i niezastąpionej pracy poświęconej wygnańcom (wbrew tytułowi nie tyl­ ko) politycznym. Dzieło Seiberta broni się samo rozległością wykorzystanego ma­ teriału i prezentowanych faktów. Jego (dużym) mankamentem jest jednak znowu, czasami uzasadnione, najczęściej jednak nie, łączenie ze sobą różnych kategorii emigracji przymusowych i dobrowolnych, jednostkowych i grupowych. Wyłącznie przesiedleniom poświęcona jest wydana niedawno książka Nancy Demand, która ogranicza jednak swoje zainteresowania do zjawisk odpowiadających jej definicji synojkizmu. Znane przypadki synojkizmu zestawia i omawia również Mauro Moggi. Poza wymienionymi istnieje oczywiście wiele prac, które dotyczą zjawisk po­ krewnych, zwłaszcza związanych z wojną, ważnych z punktu widzenia mojego te­ matu. Szczególne znaczenie mają tu studia Fritza Kiechlego, Hansa Volkmanna, Pierre Ducreya, Raoula Lonisa, Victora Hansona, a także, mimo wszelkich za­ strzeżeń, Williama Kendrick Pritchetta. Niewątpliwie bez tych dzieł, a także wielu innych, cytowanych dalej, próba cało­ ściowego opracowania zagadnień będących tematem mojej pracy nie byłaby możliwa. Nie byłaby też możliwa bez nieocenionej pomocy prof. Włodzimierza Lengau- era, który uchronił mnie przed niejednym błędem, a swoim życzliwym wsparciem sprawił, że praca została doprowadzona do końca. Wiele cennych uwag zawdzięczam prof.Benedetto Bravo. Ze względów tech­ nicznych nie wszystkie udało mi się uwzględnić w prezentowanym tekście, ale będą one cennymi wskazówkami dla dalszej pracy nad tematem. Jestem również wdzięczny za lekturę fragmentów pracy i uwagi prof. Ewie Wip- szyckiej-Bravo, prof. Wolfgangowi Schullerowi, prof. Gustavowi Adolfowi Leh- manowi, prof. Jeffreyowi Rustenowi i prof. Rozdział I DEPORTACJE PERSKIE* Zjawisko przesiedlania dużych grup ludności z jednego terenu na drugi znamy z historii wielu krajów starożytnego Wschodu. Na wielką skalę stosowali przesie­ dlenia Asyryjczycy1. Uzasadnionemu przekonaniu o powszechności deportacji na starożytnym Wschodzie2, towarzyszy opinia, że imperium perskie stanowiło pod tym względem chlubny wyjątek3. T. Cuyler Young podkreśla, że rządy perskie ce­ chowały się łagodnością i tolerancją. Jej świadectwem ma być również niewiel­ kie znaczenie deportacji w polityce Achemenidów. Persowie w odróżnieniu od swych poprzedników jedynie wyjątkowo uciekali się do stosowania przesiedleń, traktując je wyłącznie jako „metodę kontrolną"4. Na tle wcześniejszej historii Achemenidzi wypadają niewątpliwie korzystnie. Kontrast między Asyryjczykami i Babilończykami deportującymi Żydów, a Per­ sami przywracającymi ich do ojczyzny jest uderzający. Gdybyśmy jednak zapytali o zdanie starożytnych Greków ich pogląd na rządy Achemenidów nie byłby rów­ nie entuzjastyczny. Raban von Haehling porównuje strach Greków przed Persami do metus Punicus, analizując jego wpływ na działania Greków w okresie inwazji Kserksesa5. Strach przed Persami jest z pewnością starszy, aniżeli sądzi Haehling, uznając zburzenie Miletu i deportację Milezyjczyków za moment decydujący dla jego narodzin, ale jest też prawdą, że halosis Milesiou stanowi wydarzenie

  • Archaic Eretria
    ARCHAIC ERETRIA This book presents for the first time a history of Eretria during the Archaic Era, the city’s most notable period of political importance. Keith Walker examines all the major elements of the city’s success. One of the key factors explored is Eretria’s role as a pioneer coloniser in both the Levant and the West— its early Aegean ‘island empire’ anticipates that of Athens by more than a century, and Eretrian shipping and trade was similarly widespread. We are shown how the strength of the navy conferred thalassocratic status on the city between 506 and 490 BC, and that the importance of its rowers (Eretria means ‘the rowing city’) probably explains the appearance of its democratic constitution. Walker dates this to the last decade of the sixth century; given the presence of Athenian political exiles there, this may well have provided a model for the later reforms of Kleisthenes in Athens. Eretria’s major, indeed dominant, role in the events of central Greece in the last half of the sixth century, and in the events of the Ionian Revolt to 490, is clearly demonstrated, and the tyranny of Diagoras (c. 538–509), perhaps the golden age of the city, is fully examined. Full documentation of literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources (most of which have previously been inaccessible to an English-speaking audience) is provided, creating a fascinating history and a valuable resource for the Greek historian. Following the victory of 506 F retria entered fifteen years of licgemonta in central Greece, the achievements of which prompted the eulo gistic sentiments expressed in the Menexenes' which show that the memory of Eretria's years of power and fame was not yet dead in the time of Platon in the fourth century. Eretria now began pursuing imperialist/interventionist political aims. Persia was a political force that Eretria was increasingly obli ged to take into account_ for it posed a threat to Euboia and Naxos even before 500 as Herodotos makes clear,' and one can hardly forget that Miletos Nk as under increasin g pressure from Persian expansion into Ionia which resulted in the intervention of the Eretrieis in the military events of the Ionian Revolt. In Naxos, 1 he oligarchy of the Pukher.s. installed in 514 by the Lakedaimonioi (with the active support of Diagoras) fell, and was replaced by a democrac y, c.505. 3 Mvres believes that thanks to her nav y. Eretria was able and willing to assist the Naxioi in installing, a like-minded government in her sphere of interest in the middle Aegean, and that Naxos now became a dependenc y of Eretria. It was itself the centre of a small "empire" which included Paros, Eretria's old all\ and her former dependenc y Andros.' Eretrian intervention in favour of the Den,, at Naxos may have had a price-, the returi of Andros, and possibly Paros also, to the Eretrian empire. The importance of Ardros to any Eretrian bloc is obvious, and in hostile hands, the equivalent for Eretria of "the eye-sore of the Peiraieus".

    FROM MYCENAE TO CONSTANTINOPLE Richard Tomlinson introduces a representative selection of Greek and Roman cities, looking specifically at their architectural remains. They are chosen for their importance to our understanding of the evolution of the city-form, either because they were already important in antiquity, or because the quality of the remains makes them particularly interesting. Thus the survey includes early places which failed to develop, places which were major, dominant cities in their own time, and others which were never more than ordinary but which through accident (for example the eruption of Vesuvius at Pompeii) have left especially significant remains. This is more than a book about pure ancient architecture: rather it is architecture in its social context—showing how architecture is a part of history rather than an aesthetic topic to be treated in isolation. Tomlinson emphasises how the form and arrangement of different building types persist or develop in response to differing circumstances.
