Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This thesis breaks away from the prevailing notion of unanitibb as a ‘system’ of medicine by drawing attention to some key arenas in which unani practice was reinvented in the early twentieth century. Specialist and non-specialist media have projected unani tibb as a seamless continuation of Galenic and later West Asian ‘Islamic’ elaborations. In this thesis unani Jibb in early twentieth-century India is understood as a loosely conjoined set of healing practices which all drew, to various extents, on the understanding of the body as a site for the interplay of elemental forces, processes and fluids (humours). The thesis shows that in early twentieth-century unani ///)/; the boundaries between humoral, moral, religious and biomedical ideas were porous, fracturing the realities of unani practice beyond interpretations of suffering derived from a solely humoral perspective.

  • Haddithu 'An Bani Isra'ila Wa-Ia Haraja a Study of an Early Tradition
Haddithu 'an bani isra'ila wa-Ia haraja A Study of an early tradition This widely current tradition was variously interpreted by Muslim scholars. They differed in their opinions about the significance of the words of this hadith, its intent and its implications. The core of the discussion lay in fact in the problem whether it was lawful to turn to Jewish and Christian sources for guidance, to study Jewish and Christian compilations and to incorporate certain aspects from them into the Muslim cultural tradition and belief. Scru- tiny of some of these discussions may help to elucidate the tendencies of the various religious groups in Islam and assist us in gaining a deeper insight into the attitudes of Muslim scholars. I The tradition Haddithu 'an bani isra'il was considered by Goldziher as one which is opposed to the trend of Muslim orthodox scholars who watched with reluctance the influence of Jewish Aggada and of Christian legends on Muslim tradition.1 The transmission of this hadith, says Goldziher, serves as evidence of the controversy among the scholars of the second century about the trans- mission of Jewish lore. The earliest source in which this tradition is recorded is the Risala of al-Shafi'i (d. 204).2 This tradition is also reported in the Jami' of Ma'mar b. Rashid (d. 154),3 and in 'Abd al-Razzaq's Musannafwith the following isnad: 'Abd al-Razzaq > aI-Auza'I4 > Hassan b. 'AtiyyaS > Abu Kabsha6 > 'Abdallah b. 'Amr b. aI- 'As. • He Ancient Time a Very Staunch Polemics Among Muslim Scholars
e-ISSN 2289-6023 International Journal of Islamic Thought ISSN 2232-1314 Vol. 17: (June) 2020 A Comparative Study of al-Ghazali’s and Ibn Taymiyyah’s Views on Sufism AHMED NAFIU ARIKEWUYO1 Accepted: 05 February 2020 February 05 Accepted: Received: 03 September 2019 September 03 Received: ABSTRACT Sufism has generated from the ancient time a very staunch polemics among Muslim scholars. The controversy over sufism has attracted various comments and remarks over the unique and peculiar tenets of sufis. Among the Muslim scholars who have contributed to the discourse were al-Ghazali and Ibn Taymiyyah. This research aims to compare the views of these two scholars. Library research with analytic and comparative methodology was adopted. Findings show that both scholars are credited to have reformed some popular and conventional doctrines of the Sufis of their respective times. In addition, al-Ghazali and Ibn Taymiyyah agreed that some innovations and perversions have found their way into sufism. A major phenomenon in the views of the two scholars on sufism is that while al-Ghazali was to a very large extent influenced by some sufi superstitions, Ibn Taymiyyah strongly subjects sufism to the literal provisions of the Quran and Sunnah. It is the conclusion of this paper that while it is accurate to ascribe al-Ghazali to sufism, it is inaccurate to regard Ibn Taymiyyah as one despite some of his sympathetic views on some sufis. Keywords: al-Ghazali, Ibn Taymiyyah, salafism, Sufis, Sufism Sufism has been a discourse and subject of deliberation and argument among Muslim scholars. The actual factors for its controversial status can be attributed to the peculiar terms and concepts adopted by the sufis in professing Islam.

To Serdar and Hakan A GATE TO THE EMOTIONAL WORLD OF PRE-MODERN OTTOMAN SOCIETY: AN ATTEMPT TO WRITE OTTOMAN HISTORY FROM “THE INSIDE OUT” The Graduate School of Economics and Social Sciences of İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University by NİL TEKGÜL In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN HISTORY THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY İHSAN DOĞRAMACI BİLKENT UNIVERSITY ANKARA May 2016 ABSTRACT A GATE TO THE EMOTIONAL WORLD OF PRE-MODERN OTTOMAN SOCIETY: AN ATTEMPT TO WRITE OTTOMAN HISTORY FROM “THE INSIDE OUT” Tekgül, Nil P.D., Department of History Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Özer Ergenç May 2016 Beginning in the 1980’s, the research produced on various fields of knowledge including history, neuroscience, sociology, psychology and anthropology asserted that emotions are not only a product of biochemical but also cognitive processes. It is now commonly accepted that emotions do have a history, they are socially constructed changing across time and space. This thesis is an attempt to revisit the relations established within the pre-modern Ottoman society, by taking emotions into consideration. The relations are analyzed within three dimensions; the state and the subjects, intra-communal relations and familial ties. It is argued that the Ottoman state, each taife/cemaat within the society and families were not only social but also emotional communities. The collectively constructed emotional norms and codes of each emotional community and their reflections in political relations, negotiations and daily practices are elaborated via linguistic and iii discourse analysis of the primary sources. 501. Jaane do yaaro mujhe mat roko, Udta hai uqaab jeene ke liye, Nazar aata hai rizq falak se mujhe, Maut aaye zamin per gar parvaaz na ho. 502. Ai baad e saba tu hi bata, Milega kahan mujhko mera khuda. Gunagunaati hui hawa ne kaha, Na tera na mera pur jahan ka khuda, Jisey dhundta hai bande woh tere qarib, Muflis hai woh insan jisey khuda na mila. Dil jhaank kar tum dekho basa hai khuda, Nigahen utaro tum dil tak zara, Yun keh kar hawa phir chalti bani, Dhundta reh gaya main khuda ko saba. 503. Kis ke dil mein kya chhupa hai, Raaz kis ke dil mein kya, Bharosa dil per kya karun, Be imaan hai dil khudaya, Bhul sakey yeh tujhko bhi, Haafiza intekhaabi hai, Jis pe roye zaar zaar, Usi ka dil dukhaaye bhi, Bechara ban kar ruth jaaye, Ruth kar yeh sab ko sataaye, Kya shai banayi tu ne maula, Kya tera dil bhi ruth jaaye, Mujhse kyun khafaa hai tu, Qusur mera to bataa, Mujhko hi bhulaa kar maula, Is dil ne tujhko yaad kiya. 504. Aftab na dubey to kya karoge sitaro, Waqt aayega kaise jahan mein tumhara, Raat guzarne pe na aaye sahr hogi kaise, Dastur e jahan hai kashti dhunde hai kinara. 505. Bismil hun yaro zakhm taaza na karo, Taslim hai sazaa mujhko aib joi ab na karo, 506. Maujon ki ravani dekh kar peeta hun be hisaab, Seeney mein valvale uthen saahil ki hai talaash. 507. Nakhuda mujhe mila khuda na mila, Jo kashti meri lagaaye paar kya woh khuda na hua, 508.

  • Arabic Words in Bangla Language
Arabic Elements in the Bengali Language of the Barak Valley The language, Arabic is a Semitic one as mentioned in chapter-I in de tails. It is one of the oldest languages of the world spoken in all over the Arab-world and the best or mother Semitic language as well. Besides Arab- world, where there is Muslim there is Arabic throughout the world. It is the 6th international language of the UNO. Whereas Bengali is one of the most recent Aryan languages spoken in the west Bengal and Barak valley of India and Bangladesh or in the greater and undivided Bengal and also by the people migrated from these regions. It is a rich regional language of these regions of the Asian sub- continent. Thereby it is quite natural that an old, international as well as Islamic ruling class language, Arabic must have some contributions and influences on a recently developed regional language, Bengali. Before going through these contributions and influences of the Arab and the Arabic language to the Bengalese and the Bengali language let us attempt to find out some more reasons behind this. If we look behind, we see that Indo-Arab relation in trade and com merce is an old and earliest one. Arab navigators reached here for business first. Besides this relation of the Indo-Arab, the two is related to, in many other respects of life like culture and custom which can never be ignored. This relation of the two and the influences of Arab to Bengali is also because of the Muslim rules in India for decades after decades and their lordship and supremacy in every field and in every step of Indian life.
