Residents Enjoyed the Gone With the Wind Museum “Gone With the Wind” is a 1939 American epic historical romance film adapted from the 1936 novel by . The film was produced by David O. Selznick of Selznick International Pictures and directed by Victor Fleming. Set in the American South against the backdrop of the and the Reconstruction Era, the film tells the story of O’Hara, the strong-willed daughter of a Georgia plantation owner. It follows her romantic pursuit of , who is married to his cousin, , and her subsequent marriage to . The leading roles are played by (Scarlett), (Rhett), Leslie Howard (Ashley), and Olivia Gone With The Wind Museum de Havilland (Melanie). Production was difficult from the start. Filming was delayed for two years because of Selznick’s determination to secure Gable for the role of Rhett Butler, and the “search for Scarlett” led to 1,400 women being interviewed for the part. The original screenplay was written by Sidney Howard and underwent many revisions by several writers in an attempt to reduce it to a suitable length. The original director, , was fired shortly after filming began and was replaced by Fleming, who in turn was briefly replaced by Sam Wood while Fleming took some time off due to exhaustion. The film received positive reviews upon its release in December 1939, although some reviewers found it to be too long. The casting was widely praised, and many reviewers found Leigh especially suited to her role as Scarlett. At the A poster from the movie 12th Academy Awards, it received 10 Academy Awards (eight competitive, two honorary) from 13 nominations, including wins for Best Picture, Best Director (Fleming), Best Adapted Screenplay (posthumously awarded to Sidney Howard), Best Actress (Leigh), and Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel, becoming the first African American to win an Academy Award). It set records for the total number of wins and nominations at the time. “Gone With the Wind” was immensely popular when first released. It became the highest-earning film made up to that point, and held the record for over a quarter of a century. When adjusted for monetary inflation, it is still the highest-grossing film in history. It was re-released periodically throughout the 20th century and became ingrained in popular culture. Although the film has been criticized as historical negationism glorifying , it has been credited with triggering changes in the way in which are depicted cinematically. The film is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time; it has placed in the top 10 of the American Film Institute’s list of the top 100 American films since the list’s inception in 1998. In 1989, the United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. the 1950s On June 19, 2021 the residents of Cottonwood will be treated to a full day of remembering the ‘50s. The day will start off at noon with a classic car drive by, which will then park and let the residents have a chance to “check them out” and sit in the driver’s seat. In addition, residents will have a delicious lunch of hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, and root beer floats prepared by our Head Chef Jonathan and his Culinary team. There will be games to play with funny money awarded to the winners. There will be goodie bags with items that were popular from that time period. Chef and his team will outdo themselves again by preparing a delectable dinner with comfort foods from the period. Finally, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., the residents will be treated to the sounds of 1950s provided by DJ Steve M. for a fun evening of Root Beer dancing and reminiscing. Float, anyone? Marguerite R.’s 101st Birthday Celebration Marguerite and her family had an amazing day celebrating her 101st birthday with balloons, flowers, and a special cake made by Chef Jonathan, from their own family recipe that Marguerite used to make on special occasions. In addition, with their sirens on, the Alpharetta Fire and Marguerite R. wearing the birthday hat Celebrating with family Police Department stopped by to wish her a happy birthday. The following day, Marguerite and her family hosted residents who wanted to come join them by the piano for a singalong of Marguerite’s favorite songs.

The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Time to get serving Time To Celebrate Zaragoza. The victory of the smaller Mexican force against a larger French force was a boost to morale for the Mexicans. Zaragoza died months after the battle due to illness. A year after the battle, a larger French force defeated the Mexican army at the Second Battle of Puebla, and Mexico City soon fell to the invaders. More popularly celebrated in the United States than in Mexico, the date has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. These celebrations began in California, where they have been observed annually since 1863. The day gained nationwide popularity in the 1980s thanks especially to advertising campaigns by beer and wine companies. Today, Cinco de Mayo generates beer sales Let’s get this party started! on par with the Super Bowl. In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades or battle reenactments. The city of Puebla marks the event with an arts festival, a festival of local cuisine, and re-enactments of the battle. Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day — the most important national holiday in Mexico — which is celebrated on September 16th, commemorating the Cry of Dolores, which, in 1810, initiated the war of Mexican independence from Spain. All of the residents and staff were treated to a special Cinco de Mayo dinner created by our very own Culinary Team.
