Under these circumstances, the relation between national, regional, and local traditions on the one hand and supraregional, transnational aspirations on the other must be conceived. Racism, Nationalism, Xenophobia Terrorist acts of violence, ethnic and nationalistic conflicts, violent attacks on resident as well as nonresident foreigners, drug-related crime, and familial violence have become constant occurrences in the countries of Europe. The claim is repeatedly made that we in Europe today live in societies which are more non-violent than any previous ones. At the same time, however, we are plagued by the problem of violence. The problems of violence, with which the current European states have to deal, have made a renewed reflection about violence neces- sary. Within the framework of this international discussion extending beyond the bounds of individual academic disciplines, we must en- gage in a fundamental consideration of the phenomenon of violence and its manifold manifestations. Scholars from a wide variety of dis- ciplines and from different countries in Europe and North America have made an attempt to do this in this publication. We are faced not only with the problem of finding adequate po- litical, juridical and pedagogical reactions, but, even more, with the question about the political and moral basis of democracy and any type.of civil society. Because apparently not directly politically moti- vated aggressiveness and willingness to employ violence against oth- ers or foreigners arising from religious or sexual differences are often treated as normal and because violence occurs not only in the deal- ings of people with each other but can emerge from national or state systems, it must not be met with the setting up of analytical taboos or with the quick answers of a moral majority. Although the public may with good reason react with moral indignation, it remains the task of scholars to inquire into the structure, the possible causes of and mo- tives for xenophobic, racist and nationalistic violence in an interdis- ciplinary manner and with their various respective instruments. The differences in the national scope of experience serve as the background for this volume, in which not merely integrative attempts at explanation with their various perspectives on the societal, politi- cal, cultural sociopsychological and anthropological situation are presented. On the contrary we have tried here to free the phenomenon of violence, especially the acts of violence of extreme right-wing youths - but also those committed singly and which cannot be attrib- uted to these youths - from possible theoretical prejudices and to ex- amine the phenomenon of violence anew in a conceptual-theoretical, hermeneutic-historical and descriptive-empirical manner: It may not be possible to explain the explosions of violent behav- ior without understanding the crisis of the basis of reproduction of the capitalist system in the states of Europe. Acts of violence and brutality - whether they be viewed as prede- termined, as tendencies or as unavoidable risks in the various in- tellectual disciplines - could be rationalized or minimized by so- cial scientific

Lecionou na Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco e, desde junho de 1999, era professora na Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Campus Garanhuns. Publicou inúmeros trabalhos entre artigos em periódicos científicos, ensaios, organização e capítulos de livros. It seeks to establish the relationship of the various valkyrja reflexes of the culture under study with other supernatural females (particularly the dísir) through the close and careful examination of primary source material, thereby proposing a new model of base supernatural femininity for the late Iron Age. The study then goes on to examine how the valkyrjur themselves deviate from this ground state, interrogating various aspects and features associated with them in skaldic, Eddic, prose and iconographic source material as seen through the lens of the hall-based warrior elite, before presenting a new understanding of valkyrja phenomena in this social context: that valkyrjur were used as instruments to propagate the pre-existing social structures of the culture that created and maintained them throughout the late Iron Age.

    Tomten A Christmas Poem by Viktor Rydberg INTRODUCTION The Christmas poem, Tomten, by Viktor Rydberg is one of the most popular ones in Finland and Sweden. I recall having to learn this in grade school; each student was assigned some verses so we could recite the full poem by heart in class. During Christmas it was often read in the radio. This text of the poem is shown in Swedish, English and Finnish. You can listen to the traditional recital in Swedish, see a movie in Swedish with English subtitles and listen to it in a song in Finnish. The pictures used here of Tomten are from “Tonttula” in the village of Larsmo in Finland, between Karleby and Jakobstad. I have included a relationship list showing how Viktor Rydberg is one of our distant cousins. Tomte From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A tomte, nisse or tomtenisse (Sweden) or tonttu (Finland) is a humanoid mythical creature of Scandinavian folklore. The tomte or nisse was believed to take care of a farmer's home and children and protect them from misfortune, in particular at night, when the housefolk were asleep. The tomte/nisse was often imagined as a small, elderly man (size varies from a few inches to about half the height of an adult man), often with a full beard; dressed in the everyday clothing of a farmer. The Swedish name tomte is derived from a place of residence and area of influence: the house lot or tomt. Nisse is the common name in Norwegian, Danish and the Scanian dialect in southernmost Sweden; it is a nickname for Nils, and its usage in folklore comes from expressions such as Nisse god dräng ("Nisse good lad", cf.

The better known of these are Herrerasaurus ischigualastensis, Pisanosaurus mertii, Eoraptor lunensis,andPanphagia protos from the Ischigualasto Formation, Argentina, and Staurikosaurus pricei and Saturnalia tupiniquim from the Santa Maria Formation, Brazil. No uncontroversial dinosaur body fossils are known from older strata, but the Middle Triassic origin of the lineage may be inferred from both the footprint record and its sister-group relation to Ladinian basal dinosauromorphs. These include the typical Marasuchus lilloensis, more basal forms such as Lagerpeton and Dromomeron, as well as silesaurids: a possibly monophyletic group composed of Mid-Late Triassic forms that may represent immediate sister taxa to dinosaurs. The first phylogenetic definition to fit the current understanding of Dinosauria as a node-based taxon solely composed of mutually exclusive Saurischia and Ornithischia was given as ‘‘all descendants of the most recent common ancestor of birds and Triceratops’’.

Andersen, Karen Blixen and Beyond Kirstine Marie Kastbjerg Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor in Danish Studies Marianne Stecher Department of Scandinavian Studies Despite growing ubiquitous in both the popular and academic mind in recent years, the Gothic has, perhaps not surprisingly, yet to be examined within the notoriously realism-prone literary canon of Denmark. This dissertation fills that void by demonstrating an ongoing negotiation of Gothic conventions in select works by canonical Danish writers such as B.S. Ingemann, Hans Christian Andersen, and Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), as well as contemporary writers such as Peter Høeg and Leonora Christina Skov. This examination does not only broaden our understanding of these culturally significant writers and the discourses they write within and against, it also adds to our understanding of the Gothic – an infamously malleable and indefinable literary mode – by redirecting attention to a central feature of the Gothic that has not received much critical attention: the emphasis on excess, spectacle, clichéd conventions, histrionic performances, its hyperbolic rhetorical style, and hyper-visual theatricality.
