  • Folklore and Old Norse Mythology, 27.–28
H-Folk Conference: Folklore and Old Norse Mythology, 27.–28. November 2017, Helsinki, Finland. Discussion published by Mr Frog on Friday, September 22, 2017 We are pleased to announce that the international conference Folklore and Old Norse Mythology will be held 27th–28th November 2017 in Helsinki, Finland. This is the twelfth annual ‘Aarhus Mythology Conference’, as it has become commonly known. Across especially the past decade, research on Old Norse mythology has exhibited a boom of interest in both folklore collected in recent centuries and in perspectives and insights offered by today’s folklore research. Folklore and Old Norse Mythology has been organized to meet this growing interest by gathering specialists from a wide range of disciplines to share and discuss their views and approaches. Earlier scholarship had seen the value of more recent folklore in terms of continuities from an earlier time. This remains a topic of interest, approached through the frameworks of today’s methodologies, yet a look at the presentations of the event reveal that there has been shift in attention and concern. Traditions in the background of Old Norse sources are becoming viewed in terms of folklore, looking at Norse mythology through that lens while capitalizing on the analogical value of more richly-documented traditions for approaching mythology in the Old Norse world. The diverse perspectives and approached brought together in this event reflect new directions in thinking with the potential for a critical mass of discussion that could have a

  • Swedish Literature on the British Market 1998-2013: a Systemic
Swedish Literature on the British Market 1998-2013: A Systemic Approach Agnes Broomé A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UCL Department of Scandinavian Studies School of European Languages, Culture and Society September 2014 2 I, Agnes Broomé, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. …............................................................................... 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the role and function of contemporary Swedish fiction in English translation on the British book market in the period 1998-2013. Drawing on Bourdieu’s Field Theory, Even Zohar’s Polysystem Theory and DeLanda’s Assemblage Theory, it constructs a model capable of dynamically describing the life cycle of border-crossing books, from selection and production to marketing, sales and reception. This life cycle is driven and shaped by individual position-takings of book market actants, and by their complex interaction and continual evolution. The thesis thus develops an understanding of the book market and its actants that deliberately resists static or linear perspectives, acknowledging the centrality of complex interaction and dynamic development to the analysis of publishing histories of translated books. The theoretical component is complemented by case studies offering empirical insight into the model’s application. Each case study illuminates the theory from a different angle, creating thereby a composite picture of the complex, essentially unmappable processes that underlie the logic of the book market. The first takes as its subject the British publishing history of crime writer Liza Marklund, as well as its wider context, the Scandinavian crime boom.

  • Tried and True- How Great Thou
1 Upper Path Valley Presbyterian Church November 17, 2019 Tried and True: How Great Thou Art Gary Rebok, UPVPC Commissioned Lay Pastor As we come to the conclusion of this sermon series “Tried and True,” we can often find that the foundation of our faith has roots in the generations that have come before us. Some of the hymns we sing have been born out of a tragedy that initiated a longing for God’s presence to comfort a loss or catastrophe. But as said before, these hymns have been tried theologically, bringing important biblical truths to our hearts, minds, and spirits that bring about memories leading to our faith. Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for those who have come before us to bring about the words of faith inspired by and through your Holy Spirit. We ask you, Father, to raise a new generation of Christians who will delight in the Word like King David, effective and fruitful in ministry so that the knowledge of You will spread to the generations we will never know. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of all our hearts dwell richly in us this day. Amen In choosing the hymn “How Great Thou Art,” I look back to my family tradition around the table and how the foundation of my faith has emerged from a previous generation. Shortly after being called into my first ministry position, my mother paid a visit to my office with a package. She said, I brought you something for your office wall, and as I unraveled the paper from it, I uncovered a picture, something for my wall, “she said,” a picture of a guitar and the words to “How Great Thou Art.” My mother knew a bit about the history behind the song and what a treasure it meant to the family’s spiritual foundation, eventually leading me to follow God’s calling.

It seeks to establish the relationship of the various valkyrja reflexes of the culture under study with other supernatural females (particularly the dísir) through the close and careful examination of primary source material, thereby proposing a new model of base supernatural femininity for the late Iron Age. The study then goes on to examine how the valkyrjur themselves deviate from this ground state, interrogating various aspects and features associated with them in skaldic, Eddic, prose and iconographic source material as seen through the lens of the hall-based warrior elite, before presenting a new understanding of valkyrja phenomena in this social context: that valkyrjur were used as instruments to propagate the pre-existing social structures of the culture that created and maintained them throughout the late Iron Age.
