The Playing-Card Volume 47, Number 3 ULF MARTIN, JOHN McLEOD Playing the Game: Schafkopf in the Palatinate fter our positive experiences of Gaigel and Binokel at the IPCS 2018 Convention in Leinfelden, and our visit to Central Baden to play ADreierles, an ancestor of Cego, which was described in the previous issue of this journal, we next travelled to the Palatinate (Pfalz), specifically to the small village of Erfweiler, about 20km west of Landau in the middle of the Palatinate Forest. Our motive was to meet Gerhard Zwick, the author of an impressively detailed web page about a card game called Bauernstoss1. Very little has been written about card games played in the Palatinate, so we were intrigued to try out this game, which is a form of Schafkopf, and to find out if any other interesting card games were played there. The name Schafkopf, like Gaigel, Binokel and Cego, will be familiar to collectors of German playing-cards because it appears on packs of cards intended for that game. But the game of Schafkopf and its close relatives have a much wider distribution than these labelled Schafkopf cards, which are used only in Bavaria and Franconia. Schafkopf games are found not only in various parts of Germany but also in Eastern Europe, in the Baltic and Nordic countries and in the regions of North America that were settled by Germans in the 19th century. Gerhard Zwick welcomed us to his house in Erfweiler and introduced us to his friends, and we enjoyed some hours playing Bauernstoss. This is a point- trick game played with the same 32-card French-suited pack as the German national game Skat, and using the standard German card values Ace=11, Ten=10, King=4, Queen=3, Jack=2. -

The basics The Bavarian game of “Schafkopfen” is a card game that is reported to have developed in the first third of the 19th century. 1.2. The cards A pack of cards consists of 32 cards (in the format 56 x 100 mm). Each card has the “Schafkopf” picture on one side - a Bavarian card picture. 1 TROGGEN A BAROQUE GAME OF TAROT FROM SOLOTHURN Troggen is a tarot game played with an Italian suited tarot deck of 78 cards, commonly known as «Tarot de Marseille». If no such deck is available, any Tarot deck of 78 cards may be used. The card game tarot and its characteristic cards originated around 1430 in northern Italy. The oldest surviving cards were made in Milan. They were hand-painted in 1441 on the occasion of Francesco Sforza's marriage to Bianca Maria Visconti. In the early 16th century, French and Swiss mercenaries got to know the game in northern Italy and brought it back to their home countries. The Solothurn region was a centre of playing card production in Switzerland in the 18th century. The oldest surviving tarot cards in Switzerland were designed in the city of Solothurn in 1718. We know from historical sources that Troggen, as Tarock was called in Solothurn at that time, was very popular. In the course of the 19th century, other card games with French suits such as Whist, Bridge and finally the originally Dutch Jass replaced Troggen in Solothurn. In Switzerland, tarot has survived as a card game in Visperterminen and in the Surselva. Since the rules of Troggen originally applied in Solothurn are not documented, the Historical Museum Blumenstein in Solothurn redefined the rules of the game in 2015. In doing so, we relied on the very original rules of Troggu still played in Visperterminen and supplemented them with some elements of the modern French tarot. Our Troggen rules are designed to make it as easy as possible for new players to get into the game, while maximising the fun. -

Tarot 1 Tarot The tarot (/ˈtæroʊ/; first known as trionfi and later as tarocchi, tarock, and others) is a pack of playing cards (most commonly numbering 78), used from the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play a group of card games such as Italian tarocchini and French tarot. From the late 18th century until the present time the tarot has also found use by mystics and occultists in efforts at divination or as a map of mental and spiritual pathways. The tarot has four suits (which vary by region, being the French suits in Northern Europe, the Latin suits in Southern Europe, and the German suits in Central Europe). Each of these suits has pip cards numbering from ace to ten and four face cards for a total of 14 cards. In addition, the tarot is distinguished by a separate 21-card trump suit and a single card known as the Fool. Depending on the game, the Fool may act as the top trump or may be played to avoid following suit. François Rabelais gives tarau as the name of one of the games played by Gargantua in his Gargantua and Pantagruel;[1] this is likely the earliest attestation of the French form of the name.[citation needed] Tarot cards are used throughout much of Europe to play card games. In English-speaking countries, where these games are largely unplayed, tarot cards are now used primarily for divinatory purposes. Occultists call the trump cards and the Fool "the major arcana" while the ten pip Visconti-Sforza tarot deck.
