And anyone trying to piece together a year in review from the perspective of a literary institution might also feel as if they are behind the lines, ensnared in lines of text, in interpretations of the year, with direct hits and ricochets whizzing past their ears. And a good house of literature also lays down and follows lines, defines the line to be taken by the year’s events. At the Literaturhaus Frankfurt, 2013 began with a visit from the author of one of the previous year’s books, which had enriched us and enraged us in equal measure. He is a distinguished author, one from whom we can learn a lot, even when we disagree with him. In his book “My Fortunate Life”, art histo­ rian and journalist Werner Spies wrote plenty of things about success and excellence, about his friendships with Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso. He was more guarded, however, in discussing his shortcomings when he thought­ lessly – though hardly intentionally – pronounced pictures that were in fact masterful Max Ernst forgeries to be originals. The audience, on that January evening in 2013, certainly bore him little ill­will for his involuntary part in a million­euro fraud, and the friendly insistence on the part of the moderators seemed to him like interference during an act of worship. In a house of literature the year is composed of a rapid succession of events: events that are taking place right now, events that are about to start, and events that are in planning. It is like standing on a railway platform, standing behind the hissing lines, and as the trains rush past you attempt to bring one or two of them to a halt, to get a better look at them. Our institution hosts ap­ proximately 100 evening events every year. As a rough estimate, this involves around 300 books and 250 speakers. We recall an evening in February with Wilhelm Genazino. The author lives in Frankfurt. He is seen as a flâneur and a chronicler of the middle classes. That label has been attached to him, as big as a frying pan, and there it stays – not because the author is idle, but because he wears it with a smile, and each successive book he produces is stronger than the locks on our own pigeon­ hole mentality. With his book “Tarzan on the Main. Walks through Middle Germany”, written at the behest of his publisher, Michael Krüger, Genazino has given us wonderful and – typically for him – wonderfully humorous in­ sights into Frankfurt. Just a few days later, we were visited by an important critic in the shape of Helmut Böttiger, whose work always focuses on three special areas: on Paul Celan, football (especially from a Freiburg perspective), 6 7 and on post­war literature – or its prototype media machine, the Gruppe 47. She began to write as a child, and at the age of twelve, she even bound her texts together in the form of a first book. She learnt German and English at secondary school, and subsequently studied Russian literature at Waseda University in 1982. After this, she intended to go to Russia or Poland to study, since she was interested in European literature, especially Russian literature. However, her university grant to study in Poland was withdrawn in 1980 because of political unrest, and instead, she had the opportunity to work in Hamburg at a book trade company. She came to Europe by ship, then by trans-Siberian rail through the Soviet Union, Poland and the DDR, arriving in Berlin. In 1982, she studied German literature at Hamburg University, and thereafter completed her doctoral work on literature at Zurich University. Among various authors, she studied the poetry of Paul Celan, which she had already read in Japanese. Indeed, she comments on his poetry in an essay entitled ‘Paul Celan liest Japanisch’ in her collection of essays named Talisman and also in her essay entitled ‘Die Niemandsrose’ in the collection Sprachpolizei und Spielpolyglotte.

D. Cornell University 2015 This dissertation analyzes future-oriented narrative features distinguishing German literature about European communism and its legacies. Set against landscapes marked by Soviet occupation and Ceauşescu’s communist dictatorship in Romania (Müller) and against the 1956 Hungarian revolution, eastern European border openings, and post-Wende Berlin (Mora, Bánk), works by these transnational authors engage social legacies that other discourses relegate to an inert past after the historic rupture of 1989. Dominant scholarship reads this literature either through trauma theory or according to autobiography, privileging national histories and static cultural identities determined by the past. Shifting attention to complex temporal structures used to narrate literary subjectivities, I show how these works construct European futures that are neither subsumed into a homogeneous present, nor trapped in traumatic repetition, nostalgic longing, or psychic disavowal. My analysis extends and contributes to debates in politics and the arts about the status of utopia after communism and the role of society in political entities no longer divided in Cold War terms of East/West, three worlds, or discrete national cultures. By focusing on Müller, Mora and Bánk, I widen the purview of FRG-GDR discussions about communism to include transnational, temporal and narrative perspectives that scholarship on these authors often overlooks.

His brilliant dialogues reveal how closely eroticism, economics and politics are intertwined – connections and entanglements that still exist today. His deep understanding of petit-bourgeois language, which he trenchantly called “educated jargon” (Bildungsjargon), his concise critique of language, and his “crazy sentences” (irre Sätze; Peter Handke) deeply informed post-1945 German literature. Authors like for instance Peter Handke, Peter Turrini, Wolfgang Bauer, Franz Xaver Kroetz, Werner Schwab, Elfriede Jelinek, Felix Mitterer, Dea Loher and René Pollesch are clearly to be recognized as followers in Horváth‘s dramatic tradition. Ödön von Horváth died 80 years ago in Paris at the age of 36. Today, Ödön von Horváth is one of the most frequently performed German speaking authors; his contemporaries already celebrated his plays Italian Night, Tales from the Vienna Woods (both 1931) and Kasimir and Karoline (1932) as a renewal of the traditional folk play. In his dramas Horváth focuses on the petit bourgeoisie and its social, political and economic parameters, which he depicts critically but not without empathy. Over and over again he tried to observe the social structures from “the woman‘s point of view” and hence created his famous “Fräulein” characters, like for instance Marianne, Karoline and Elisabeth. Hans Henny Jahnn’s novel Das Holzschiff (1949) Jochen Vogt Lieber Gonçalo, Dear students, colleagues and friends, Minhas Senhoras, meus Senhores, as all of you can imagine, I felt deeply touched when I received the invitation not only to take part in this great symposium to honour Gonçalo Vilas-Boas, but to deliver what they call, even in German nowadays, a “keynote”. On reflexion however, I became sceptical, if not a little distressed. Like most other speakers, I presume, I had been asked to focus on one of Gonçalos favourite fields of research. And soon the matter looked like a disaster in disguise. For I was never – to my knowledge – really interested in labyrinths or such mythological themes, and as far as travels are concerned, I have always walked on the practical side. It is true, I travelled quite a deal, mostly with the blessing of Saint Erasmus of Brussels, and often enough, since 1976, to visit friends, colleagues and students at the Universities of Oporto, Coimbra, Lisboa, Aveiro, VilaReal – and even Viseu. And I am still confident I shall make it to Braga one day. His father worked for a paper mill, becoming its managing director in 1914. Thanks to his mother's influence, Brecht knew the Bible, a familiarity that would impact on his writing throughout his life. From her, too, came the "dangerous image of the self-denying woman" that recurs in his drama. Brecht's home life was comfortably middle class, despite what his occasional attempt to claim peasant origins implied. At school in Augsburg he met Caspar Neher, with whom he formed a lifelong creative partnership, Neher designing many of the sets for Brecht's dramas and helping to forge the distinctive visual iconography of their epic theatre. When he was 16, the First World War broke out. Initially enthusiastic, Brecht soon changed his mind on seeing his classmates "swallowed by the army".
