Thus dots below letters represent retroflex sounds which are pronounced with the tip of the tongue striking the roof of the mouth further back than for dental sounds which are articulated by placing the tip of the tongue against the upper front teeth. Among the other sounds transliterated here c represents the voiceless palato-alveolar affricate (as sounded in the English church ) and ś the palatal sibilant (as sounded in English sh ow ). The lingual which will be found occurring in Sanskrit words is similar in pronunciation to the palatal . -

Karunakaran / Lost in Translation “Lost in Translation”: A Study of the History of Sri Lankan Literature Shamila Karunakaran Abstract This paper provides an overview of the history of Sri Lankan literature from the ancient texts of the precolonial era to the English translations of postcolonial literature in the modern era. Sri Lanka’s book history is a cultural record of texts that contains “cultural heritage and incorporates everything that has survived” (Chodorow, 2006); however, Tamil language works are written with specifc words, ideas, and concepts that are unique to Sri Lankan culture and are “lost in translation” when conveyed in English. This is a common problem when translating non-Western texts for North American and British readership, especially those written in non-Roman scripts. Literature and texts are tangible symbols, containing signifed cultural meaning, and they represent varying aspects of an existing international ethnic, social, or linguistic culture or group. Chodorow (2006) likens it to a cultural record of sorts, which he defnes as an object that “contains cultural heritage and incorporates everything that has survived” (pg. 373). In particular, those written in South Asian indigenous languages such as Tamil, Sanskrit, Urdu, Sinhalese are written with specifc words, ideas, and concepts that are unique to specifc culture[s] and cannot be properly conveyed in English translations. -

Part I: the Kandyan Kings and Cosmopolitan Discourse
THE MANY FACES OF THE KANDYAN KINGDOM, 1591-1765: LESSONS FOR OUR TIME?1 PART I: THE KANDYAN KINGS AND COSMOPOLITAN DISCOURSE Introduction This paper discusses the reign of Vimaladharmasūriya, the first consecrated king of Kandy (1591-1604) and his successors during whose reigns the Kandyan kingdom became a place that provided a home for diverse cultures and communities. Prior to this Kandy was ruled by three local kings, the first being Senāsammata Vikramabāhu (c. 1469-1511). Senāsammata means elected by the sēna or army or perhaps by members of the aristocratic class known as banḍ āras (“lords).” Vikramabāhu tried to assert his independence from the sovereign kings of Kōṭṭe. That kingdom commenced with Bhūvanekabāhu V (1371-1408) and ended with Bhūvanekabāhu VII (1521-51) and his grandson Dharmapāla (1551- 1597), the first Catholic sovereign. Vikramabāhu was badly defeated and had to pay a large tribute. After Dharmapāla died Kōṭṭe became part of Portugal which now had control over much of Jaffna in the north and the Maritime provinces in the south. The Portuguese were a presence in Kōṭṭe from 1506 and had the support of Bhūvanekabāhu VII but not his brother Māyādunne, the ruler of Sītāvaka 1 who was a foe of the Portuguese. His intrepid son Rājasinha I (1581-1593) at one time nearly brought about the whole kingdom of Kōṭṭe and much of Kandy under his rule. As for the fortunes of Kandy Vikramabāhu was followed by his son Jayavīra Banḍ āra (1511- 1552) during whose time Catholic friars became a presence in the court.2 In order to please the Portuguese and the king of Kōṭṭe he became a nominal Catholic until he was deposed and exiled by his son Karalliyadde Banḍ āra (1552-1582) who became a devoted Catholic and publicly embraced Catholicism around 1562-1564. -

They are a marginalised group, part of a culture which is undergoing rapid assimilation, and any information that we have at present about them may be lost if it is not recorded. There is as yet no adequate history of the Afro-Sri Lankans. The three waves of European colonisers (Portuguese, Dutch and British) that came to the shores of Sri Lanka brought Africans with them to this island in the Indian Ocean. This paper focuses on the largest Afro-Sri Lankan contemporary community. Since Sri Lanka regained its independence, the Afro-Sri Lankans have had to cope with the socio-political changes that have occurred in postcolonial Sri Lanka. -

LINE UP 1 President’s message 2 Editorial 3 Community Service 7 Environmental Service Professional Development 8 Club Service 9 Completing the second quarter of the Rotaract year 2019/20, Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa strode forward in its journey to “Explore, Develop & Serve”. As we crossed the milestone of six months in this Rotaract year, I am indeed proud to mention that Rotaract Mora has been able to continue its service in all its avenues to deliver our best service as a part of the global fraternity of Rotaract. Signature projects including Grama Prabodhaya, Are You Ready? 2019, Hand in Hand 2019/20 and Ceylon Safari were continued with the relentless eorts of our member base. Initiatives such as Spooky Halloween were added to the Rotaract Mora calendar opening up new opportunities for the members to engage in diversied activities. The second quarter of Rotaract Mora was a special milestone to the Club Service avenue and mem- bership development aspects of the club with several events such as the orientation for the students of National Diploma in Technology of University of Moratuwa and the rst phase of Rota Spark, the open day for newbies of the university. These eorts were able to open up chances for the new generation of Rotarctors to commence their journey in this global network. The collaborative eorts of Rotaract Mora with fellow Rotaractors such as Joy of Christmas were successfully completed while strengthening the fellowship of all members involved. The success throughout these past few months would not have been a reality if not for the countless hours of dedication of our members and the assistance of the fellow Rota- ract Clubs, Interact Clubs, Rotary Clubs and various governmental and non-governmental organisations. -
