Prospects and Problems in Sri Lankan Studies
1 Prospects and Problems in Sri Lankan Studies John D. Rogers - November 1999, revised June 2005. This essay is intended to provide an introduction to recent Sri Lankan studies in the United States. The first section outlines the broad parameters of the field, and the second places American-based scholarship in the context of global scholarship on Sri Lanka, especially that being carried out in Sri Lanka itself. The third section discusses the prospects for American research on Sri Lanka. The essay is not intended to serve as a comprehensive review of current scholarship in the United States, but enough references are provided to give some guidance to scholars or graduate students considering entering the field. It covers only recent scholarship, although some older works remain important (e.g., Ryan 1953, Wriggins 1960, Kearney 1971, G. Obeyesekere 1981). American Scholarship on Sri Lanka The number of American-based scholars and advanced graduate students who focus on Sri Lanka is quite small. At any one time close to 100 individuals fall into this category, including those scholars for whom the Sri Lanka aspect of their research is very much secondary to disciplinary or thematic interests. But enough people are active in the field to constitute a lively intellectual community. Most American-based scholars with doctorates received their degrees from American institutions, but a few have overseas graduate degrees, principally from British universities. They are found in all types of American higher education institutions, from large research universities to small colleges that focus on teaching undergraduates. Independent scholars also contribute to the field. -

IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 1 – Issue 2 – Autumn 2016 The Rise of Popular Asceticism in Sinhalese Buddhist Culture: Some Significant Concepts and Practices Isha Gamlath Freie Universität Berlin, Germany Abstract The briefest explanation that could be provided for asceticism in the original Theravada Buddhist tradition is that it is a physically and mentally lived enterprise for fulfilling enlightenment (nibbana). As such, the enterprise demands serious practical and intellectual commitment. In total contrast to this original Theravada Buddhist concept of asceticism, a contextual frame of asceticism has been developing in Sinhalese Buddhist culture in recent years. The frame will be defined in the present discussion as ‘popular asceticism’. The frame is profoundly influenced by specific developments in Sinhalese Buddhist culture among which are some noticeable concepts and practices. These concepts and practices are assumed in this discussion as part of an underlying structure of a dynamic historical process which exemplifies a framework involving beliefs and practices of diverse social groups in Sinhalese Buddhist culture. The investigation of the practice of upavasa maghata (abstinence from killing animals on special ceremonial days), spirit worship and the concept of caste will help comprehend their contribution in forming the ‘popular’ ascetic context in Sinhalese Buddhist culture. They are a marginalised group, part of a culture which is undergoing rapid assimilation, and any information that we have at present about them may be lost if it is not recorded. There is as yet no adequate history of the Afro-Sri Lankans. The three waves of European colonisers (Portuguese, Dutch and British) that came to the shores of Sri Lanka brought Africans with them to this island in the Indian Ocean. This paper focuses on the largest Afro-Sri Lankan contemporary community. Since Sri Lanka regained its independence, the Afro-Sri Lankans have had to cope with the socio-political changes that have occurred in postcolonial Sri Lanka. -

As we crossed the milestone of six months in this Rotaract year, I am indeed proud to mention that Rotaract Mora has been able to continue its service in all its avenues to deliver our best service as a part of the global fraternity of Rotaract. Signature projects including Grama Prabodhaya, Are You Ready? 2019, Hand in Hand 2019/20 and Ceylon Safari were continued with the relentless eorts of our member base. Initiatives such as Spooky Halloween were added to the Rotaract Mora calendar opening up new opportunities for the members to engage in diversied activities. The second quarter of Rotaract Mora was a special milestone to the Club Service avenue and mem- bership development aspects of the club with several events such as the orientation for the students of National Diploma in Technology of University of Moratuwa and the rst phase of Rota Spark, the open day for newbies of the university. These eorts were able to open up chances for the new generation of Rotarctors to commence their journey in this global network. The collaborative eorts of Rotaract Mora with fellow Rotaractors such as Joy of Christmas were successfully completed while strengthening the fellowship of all members involved. The success throughout these past few months would not have been a reality if not for the countless hours of dedication of our members and the assistance of the fellow Rota- ract Clubs, Interact Clubs, Rotary Clubs and various governmental and non-governmental organisations. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT The two important temples at Munnesvaram, on the west coast of Sri Lanka, are Hindu and are run by Tamil priests. Their patronage is largely Sinhalese Buddhist. They are the context for an examination of the relations between Hinduism and Buddhism in modern Sri Lanka in a period of violent ethnic tension between Tamils and Sinhalese. The thesis falls in two parts. The first deals with the history of the temples in the colonial and post-colonial eras, the history of religious difference, and with a social analysis of the two groups of priests and of the worshippers. This establishes grounds for a consideration of current anthropological debates on hierarchy and on historicity. -

Trade , colonisation and slavery have been drivers of migration , interconnecting people of diverse ethnicity globally. Afro - Asian communities are both historic and contemporary a nd, w hilst Afro - diasporic communities in the Atlantic World are well recognised, the diasporas in Asia have only become visible in the last decade. Assimilation to the diversity of the Indian Ocean has cont ributed to this invisibility. With the loss of patronage due to changing political scenarios, African migrants have bec o me disenfranchised. The dynamics of their identity, shaped by strong cultural memories bring out their African roots. This paper argue s that diasporic consciousness of Afro - Asians is expressed through their strong cultural memories. As people with dual belongings, identifying with both the homeland and the hostland , Afro - Asians are able to reconcile their hybrid identities. With the mov ement of Afro - Asians from the peripheries their subaltern voices are beginning to be heard. T heir eclipsed histories and lost narratives are challeng ing the Atlantic model of African migration . Podi (Age 54, Badulla) 3 Abstract This thesis examines the lives of Sinhala women in postcolonial Sri Lanka, particularly the cultural construction of the 'Sinhala woman' as an aspect of the 'invented tradition' during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In order to historicise gender and culture I examine the pre - colonial and colonial period and also focus my attention on a set of informal restrictions working to constrain women's equal participation in economic, social and political activities, which the Sinhala community identifies as a part and parcel of the 'culture and tradition'. This thesis uses life histories of sixty-four women and life cycle and life course approaches to analyse the data. The first chapter sets the context of the study. The second chapter discusses childhood in order to examine how girls come to understand that they are different from boys. The third chapter discusses an important milestone in Sinhala women's lives, attaining puberty, where the 'traditions' they learn become meaningful and reinforce gender differences. The fourth chapter discusses how and why the 'tradition' was invented. -

Chapter 2 Luso-Creole Culture and Identity Compared Th e Cases of Guinea-Bissau and Sri Lanka Christoph Kohl Introduction Th e Upper Guinea Coast is a special case, where processes of creolization in con- nection to Portugal’s expansion are concerned. Colonial ideology used to depict Guinea-Bissau as the ‘fi rst Portuguese possession’, ‘cradle’ (Reis Torgal 2005: 64), and ‘dawn’ (Governo da Guiné 1952) of the Portuguese empire. Th e Portuguese called at the Upper Guinea Coast on their way to Asia and Brazil. Portuguese culture, having ‘disembarked’ there fi rst, has been appropriated, integrated and transformed by local populations there since the late fi fteenth century. Hence, the Upper Guinea Coast was the fi rst region where creolization occurred in con- nection to (Portuguese) colonialism (Vale de Almeida 2007). Processes of cultural and particularly linguistic creolization in Africa and Asia have been the subject of several ‘mono-sited’ studies. However, very few (e.g. Knörr 2008, 2010) in- volve a comparative look at such processes and their social impact. Generally speaking, fi ndings concerning linguistic connections are linked to connections beyond language – where people speak, they interact (and vice versa); and where they interact, new culture and new identifi cations are likely to emerge. Research has, however, led to a number of studies on creole groups and culture, which I term ‘Luso-Creole’. Th is notion alludes to a network of ‘continued identities’ and cultural representations that started emerging during the Portuguese expansion that began in the fi fteenth century and have since acquired specifi c complexities and dynamics (Pina Cabral 2010). -

Preface and Acknowledgements Indian Institute of Dalit Studies (IIDS) has been among the first research organizations to undertake studies on the development concerns of the marginalized groups and socially excluded communities. Over the last five years IIDS has carried out a large number of studies on different aspects of social exclusion and discrimination of the historically marginalized social groups, such as the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Religious minorities in India and other parts of South Asia. This report is part of a regional research project on caste-based discrimination and constitutes an important landmark for us. For the first time researchers from five countries of South Asia have worked together to understand the nature and forms of caste-based discrimination in different political settings of Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. This comparative study brings out new information on the extent and nature of caste based discrimination and we hope it will open up new spaces for state policy and civil society interventions for making South Asia a more just and democratic region. This report has been made possible by efforts of various individuals and institutions. First of all we would like to acknowledge the financial and intellectual support we received from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Dalit Solidarity Network (IDSN). We are particularly grateful to Ms Rikke Nöhrlind for her support to the project.
