IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 1 – Issue 2 – Autumn 2016 The Rise of Popular Asceticism in Sinhalese Buddhist Culture: Some Significant Concepts and Practices Isha Gamlath Freie Universität Berlin, Germany Abstract The briefest explanation that could be provided for asceticism in the original Theravada Buddhist tradition is that it is a physically and mentally lived enterprise for fulfilling enlightenment (nibbana). As such, the enterprise demands serious practical and intellectual commitment. In total contrast to this original Theravada Buddhist concept of asceticism, a contextual frame of asceticism has been developing in Sinhalese Buddhist culture in recent years. The frame will be defined in the present discussion as ‘popular asceticism’. The frame is profoundly influenced by specific developments in Sinhalese Buddhist culture among which are some noticeable concepts and practices. These concepts and practices are assumed in this discussion as part of an underlying structure of a dynamic historical process which exemplifies a framework involving beliefs and practices of diverse social groups in Sinhalese Buddhist culture. The investigation of the practice of upavasa maghata (abstinence from killing animals on special ceremonial days), spirit worship and the concept of caste will help comprehend their contribution in forming the ‘popular’ ascetic context in Sinhalese Buddhist culture. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT The two important temples at Munnesvaram, on the west coast of Sri Lanka, are Hindu and are run by Tamil priests. Their patronage is largely Sinhalese Buddhist. They are the context for an examination of the relations between Hinduism and Buddhism in modern Sri Lanka in a period of violent ethnic tension between Tamils and Sinhalese. The thesis falls in two parts. The first deals with the history of the temples in the colonial and post-colonial eras, the history of religious difference, and with a social analysis of the two groups of priests and of the worshippers. This establishes grounds for a consideration of current anthropological debates on hierarchy and on historicity. -

Preface and Acknowledgements Indian Institute of Dalit Studies (IIDS) has been among the first research organizations to undertake studies on the development concerns of the marginalized groups and socially excluded communities. Over the last five years IIDS has carried out a large number of studies on different aspects of social exclusion and discrimination of the historically marginalized social groups, such as the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Religious minorities in India and other parts of South Asia. This report is part of a regional research project on caste-based discrimination and constitutes an important landmark for us. For the first time researchers from five countries of South Asia have worked together to understand the nature and forms of caste-based discrimination in different political settings of Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. This comparative study brings out new information on the extent and nature of caste based discrimination and we hope it will open up new spaces for state policy and civil society interventions for making South Asia a more just and democratic region. This report has been made possible by efforts of various individuals and institutions. First of all we would like to acknowledge the financial and intellectual support we received from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Dalit Solidarity Network (IDSN). We are particularly grateful to Ms Rikke Nöhrlind for her support to the project. ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: COLONIAL CHOREOGRAPHY: STAGING SRI LANKAN DANCERS UNDER BRITISH COLONIAL RULE FROM THE 1870s – 1930s Sudesh Bandara Mantillake Madamperum Arachchilage, Doctor of Philosophy, 2018. Dissertation directed by: Dr. Esther Kim Lee, School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies. In textbooks the terms “Kandyan dance” and its equivalent in the Sinhala language “udarata nätuma” are used to describe the dance tradition that was predominantly practiced in the Kandyan region of Sri Lanka. Nationalist histories portray Kandyan dance as a continuation of a pristine tradition that was passed down from ancient Sinhala kingdoms. As the Sinhala nationalist discourse glorified Kandyan dance vis à vis its Tamil counterpart, it obscured the British colonial encounter with Kandyan dancers by leaving out a part of the rich history of dance. As I demonstrate in this dissertation, colonialism transformed to a significant extent the Kandyan dancescape of the British colonial period, particularly between the 1870s and 1930s. Therefore, this dissertation re-examines the history of the so-called tradition of Kandyan dance with the focus on the British colonial encounter with performers of the Kandyan region. As a Sri Lankan dancer, I try to trace and interpret the histories of dancers that were ignored or shrouded in silence in colonial and Sinhala national histories. As a historian, I interpret archival materials through textual and visual analysis while as a dancer, I interpret archival materials through my embodied knowledge -

In recognising the ideologies of preservation that define the current Kōlam practice as traditional knowledge, which manifests in its rarity on the one hand, and its common usages in the urban economic context on the other, this exploration attempts to contextualise the performance genre from a different point of entry. The perception that Kōlam is a comprehensive performance system, informed by the ontological and epistemological sensibilities of the performance maker, that in turn manifest in its aesthetic and narrative expression, is the key driver behind the research. -

MADURIKA RASARATNAM 2 Abstract This dissertation examines the divergent trajectories of ethnic and national politics in the Tamil speaking regions of India and Sri Lanka. Despite comparable historical experiences and conditions, the south Indian Tamil speaking areas were peaceably accommodated within a pan-Indian framework whilst Sri Lankan politics was marked by escalating Tamil-Sinhala ethnic polarisation and violent conflict. The dissertation explains these contrasting outcomes by setting out a novel theoretical framework that draws on the work of Reinhart Koselleck and his analysis of the links between concepts and political conflict. -

Winojith Sanjeewa Coventry University, United Kingdom [email protected] Abstract. Mahavamsa , the most widely cited historical Pali chronicle, records information about the performing arts of the Yaksha and Naga tribes who lived even before the advent of Vijaya to Sri Lanka in 543 BC. With the introduction of Buddhism and Hinduism to Sri Lanka (250 BC), ritual and religious based ceremonies inspired by India developed and the performing artiste played a significant role in those ceremonies. Because of the subjugation of Sri Lanka to Portuguese rule in 1505, the Dutch in 1658 and the British in 1815 several changes took place in Sri Lankan art. With the Sinhalese-Buddhist policy declared in 1956, the main ethnic groups of Sinhalese and Tamil separated into two distinct groups with the result that a civil war lasting more than twenty-five years ensued. Along with this, the performing arts divorced itself from the common ethnic background and separated into two as Sinhalese and Tamil. This directly impacted on the arts with the changes in the social, cultural, political and economic fields allied to the agrarian economy that occurred under each period of colonisation. This paper will analyse and discuss how some of the Sri Lankan Folk theatre and Dance traditions and artiste have overcome issues such as caste, ethnicity and gender in their practice and how, in overcoming such obstacles, this can contribute to an improvement in ethno-religious cohesion in wider society. -

BUDDHISM, CONFLICT AND VIOLENCE IN MODERN SRI LANKA Buddhism, Conflict and Violence in Modern Sri Lanka explores dilemmas that Theravada Buddhism faces in relation to the continuing ethnic conflict and violence in recent decades. In this book, prominent scholars in the fields of anthropology, history, Buddhist Studies and Pali examine multiple dimensions of the problem. It discusses in detail various Buddhist responses to the crisis and suggests ways how resources found within Buddhism and Buddhist institutions can help create peace in Sri Lanka. Evaluating the role of Buddhists and their institutions in bringing about an end to war and violence, this collection puts forward a critical analysis of the religious conditions contributing to continuing hostilities. Mahinda Deegalle is Senior Lecturer in the Study of Religions at Bath Spa University. His research interests are Buddhist Preaching, Mahayana Buddhism in Sri Lanka and Violence and Peacebuilding. He is the co-editor of Pali Buddhism (Curzon, 1996), and is currently researching on Buddhist monks’ involvement in Parliamentary Politics.
