Within the Context of Searching for a National Identity, the Search for a Female Identity Also Arises in Don Quijote by Miguel
ENVIRONMENTAL SURROUNDINGS DEFINING NATIONAL IDENTITIES by MEGAN TRENHOLM (Under the Direction of Susan Quinlan) ABSTRACT Throughout this thesis, three books will be discussed: A Bagaceira by José Américo de Almeida, Iracema by José de Alencar, and A Senhora by José de Alencar as well. These works will be interlinked based on their principle female characters and how their feminine characteristics are always in comparison with their environmental surroundings. Because they all deal with the flora and fauna of a specific historic place based on where the specific story takes place, all of them also correspond with the search for a national identity. In addition to the search for a national identity, each female character exemplifies the Persephone – Demeter myth and cyclical events that pertain to fertility. All of these works attempt to center on ecofeminism and the search for a “matrifocal” society rather than a patriarchal society. Engels's Anti-Diihring, Feuerbach and the End of Classical German Philosophy and Dialectics of Nature are the writings most elaborated upon by the author, who, refuting efforts to draw a line between Marx and Engels as regards their later followers, stresses Engels's contribution to Marxism. She argues that his contribution to dialectical materialism is still important for a clarification of topical issues, and makes some comments on the vicissitudes of diamat in the USSR. A chronology of Engels's life and an annotated bibliography are appended. HARTMANN, KLAUS. Die Marxsche Theorie. Eine philosophische Unter- suchung zu den Hauptschriften. Walter de Gruyter & Co, Berlin 1970. xii, 593 pp. DM 78.00. The author of this learned study undertakes a re-appraisal of Marx's theory from a purely philosophical angle. He criticizes Popper's theses (and lack of understanding of Hegelianism), but his own refutation of Marxian views brings him closer to Popper's. It is denied that a dialectical process going on in reality could justifiably be made to fit in the chain of historical necessity. Besides Marx's more philosophical writings all his major works, especially Capital, come up for discussion. COMMON PERSPECTIVES IN POST-COLONIAL INDIAN AND AFRICAN FICTION IN ENGLISH ABSTRACT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF Bottor of IN ENGLISH LITERATURE BY AMINA KISHORE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ALIGARH MUSLIIVI UNIVERSITY ALIGARH 1995 Abstract The introduction of the special paper on Commonwealth Literature at the Post Graduate level and the paper called 'Novel other than British and American' at the Under Graduate level at AMU were the two major eventualities which led to this study. In the paper offered to the M A students, the grouping together of Literatures from atleast four of the Commonwealth nations into one paper was basically a makeshift arrangement. The objectives behind the formulation of such separate area as courses for special study remained vaguely described and therefore unjustified. The teacher and students, were both uncertain as to why and how to hold the disparate units together. The study emerges out of such immediate dilemma and it hopes to clarify certain problematic concerns related to the student of the Commonwealth Literature. Most Commonwealth criticism follows either (a) a justificatory approach; or (b) a confrontationist approach; In approach (a) usually a defensive stand is taken by local critics and a supportive non-critical, indulgent stand is adopted by the Western critic. In both cases, the issue of language use, nomenclature and the event cycle of colonial history are the routes by which the argument is moved. Approach (b) invariably adopts the Post-Colonial Discourse as its norm of presenting the argument. According to this approach, the commonness of Commonwealth Literatures emerges from the fact that all these Literatures have walked ••• through the fires of enslavement and therefore are anguished, embattled units of creative expression. -

As relações língua-cultura-sociedade estão refletidas na língua e, a partir de seu estudo, principalmente no nível lexical, observamos aspectos valorizados e até as condições de vida impostas a ele pelo meio físico. Os topônimos são as unidades lexicais nomeadoras de lugares, estudados pela Toponímia. O objetivo deste trabalho é a análise de “Iracema”, escrita por José de Alencar, dividida em: breve contexto histórico na Europa e no Brasil, dados sobre o autor e a obra, e, análise, resumo da obra, além de se aplicar o embasamento teórico-metodológico relativo à Toponímia. TELEFONEMA, é uma antologia da produção jornalística de Oswald de Andrade a partir de 1909, quando re- digiu a coluna teatral do Diário Po- pular, até sua última crônica para o Correio da Manhã, divulgada no dia seguinte ao de sua morte. A seleção e estabelecimento dos textos são de Vera Chalmers, jovem universitária e pesquisadora de altos méritos que integra a equipe de estu- diosos formada pelo Professor Antô- nio Cândido de Melo e Souza. Dela também a valiosa e esclarecedora in- trodução crítica, onde analisa, com inteligência e agudeza, o discurso jor- nalístico de Oswald de Andrade. As notas de rodapé, situando fatos e pes- soas, são igualmente de sua autoria. Brazilian Arts The Migration of Poetry to Videos and Installations Solange Ribeiro de Oliveira Opening with statements made by representative poets of the last two decades, this essay discusses aspects of contemporary Brazilian poetic output. As demon- strated by the poets in question, Brazilian poetry still lives in the shadow of the great masters of the recent past, such as Fernando Pessoa, Manuel Bandeira, Carl- os Drummond de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade, Murilo Mendes, João Cabral de Mello Neto, and the concrete poets. Yet, there is no such thing as a general poet- ics, reducible to a set of parameters or to a common theoretical framework. This plural character of Brazilian poetry, however, does not exclude certain dominant traits, such as an emphasis on craftsmanship, rewriting, hermeticism, irony, and a problematic subject. Nonetheless, a few poets seem to refuse mere verbal play and insist on honoring the pact of communication with the reader. Discussing the qualities of ‘the poetic’, this essay culminates in a discussion of the special rela- tionship that poetry has with other artistic manifestations, such as videos and in- stallations. Teenagers are said to have had many a crush on the main character(s)! A successful multi-media precursor before multi-media was even invented: opera, films, cartoons, TV series, games and more! A reminder for the Brazilian Bilingual Book Club members, who read Mário de Andrade’s Macunaíma(1928), last year: (i) M. de Andrade dedicated his novel to the ‘Pai de Mutum’ - José de Alencar & (ii) notice similarities in the magical fantastic ending of both novels. -

Theological Studies 64 (2003) BOOK REVIEWS FEAR,ANOMALY, AND UNCERTAINTY IN THE GOSPEL OF MARK. By Douglas W. Geyer. ATLA Monograph Series, No. 47. Lanham, Md.: Scarecrow, 2002. Pp. xi + 340. $58. Contemporary Markan scholarship has frequently noted the indications of fear, anomaly, and uncertainty in the Gospel. Geyer’s book, however, does not so much take part in this ongoing conversation as provide, in great detail, the biblical and especially Greco-Roman historical and cultural con- texts of these and related terms in Mark 4:35–6:53. In this regard, a sen- tence from the Preface better indicates the book’s contents than does its title: “I hope that this book saves time for future students of the Gospel of Mark, especially those who are interested in what can be ascertained of the historical and cultural context of the Gospel. It is truly worthwhile to learn how to use a well-stocked theological library and the primary sources buried therein, and to marshal these various resources into a coherent argument” (xi). G.’s opening chapter, “Mark and Violent Death: Crucifixion as Horror and Riddle,” argues that the nature of the crucifixion is foreshadowed especially in “Mark 4:35–6:56, a literary cycle that focuses on anomaly, uncertainty, indeterminacy, impurity, violence, revenge, the demonic, fear, and loss of place and community” (4). G. calls this aspect of Mark “the anomalous frightful,” and his goal is to portray comparable references to the anomalous frightful in ancient historical and literary works. To indicate the scale of G.’s work, I note that there are 165 entries in his “Ancient Author and Title Index.” As a Markan scholar, I was intrigued by G.’s early comment that “Mark 4:35–6:56 is notable for the absence of expla- nations of what Jesus does or asks others to do in the stories” (6), but G. -

It presents major topics in the panorama of Brazilian cultural history and civilization from 1500 to the present through readings on regions, cultures, peoples, and arts, including the architects of Brazil’s national cultural identity, its chronological development, and modern self-description. Topics include discovery and rediscovery of Brazil, baroque architecture, romanticism and empire, regionalism, immigration, urbanization, and modernization. The main texts draw on a cultural history of Brazil through selected writings by major authors and scholars. The course features an individual creative project on the student’s experience in Brazil to be presented in Portuguese during the final two classes. Requirements No absences allowed in YSS. Two objective tests during weeks 3 and 6 (40%) covering important names, documents, and events from the readings. Preparation and oral participation in each class discussion required (20%). Each student will prepare an original project on a specific interest in Brazil, coordinated with the professor (25%), presented in class on July 20. -

A índia dos lábios de mel Um dos mais belos romances da nossa literatura romântica, Iracema é considerado por muitos “um poema em prosa”. A trágica história de amor impossível da bela índia apaixonada pelo guerreiro branco Martim Soares Moreno é contada por José de Alencar com o ritmo e a força de imagens próprios da poesia e explica as origens da terra natal do autor, o Ceará. Nasceu em 1 de maio de 1829 em Lagoa Redonda, próximo a Messejana – Ceará. Cursou direito em São Paulo, foi político, jurista, dramaturgo e romancista. Em 1859 tornou-se chefe da Secretaria do Ministério da Justiça, sendo depois consultor do mesmo, tornando-se mais tarde deputado estadual do Ceará. Em 1856 publica o primeiro romance, Cinco Minutos, seguido de A Viuvinha em 1857. Mas é com O Guarani em (1857) que alcançará notoriedade. Estes romances foram publicados todos em jornais e só depois em livros. Morreu dia 12 de dezembro de 1877. O guarani,1857 Lucíola,1862 Ubirajara,1874 O sertanejo,1875 A viuvinha,1857 O gaúcho,1870 Cinco Demônio minutos,1856 familiar,1857 A pata da Verso e Gazela,1870 Reverso,1857 Senhora,1875 Mãe,1860 Diva,1864 O romance situa-se nos primeiros anos do século XVII, quando Portugal ainda estava sob domínio Espanhol (União Ibérica), e por forças da união das coroas ibéricas, a dinastia castelhana ou filipina reinava em Portugal e em suas colônias ultra- marinas. A ação inicia-se entre 1603 e o começo de 1604 e prolonga-se até 1611. O episódio amoroso entre Martin e Iracema, do encontro à morte da protagonista, dá-se em 1604 e ocupa quase todo romance, do capítulo II ao XXXII.
