Engels's Anti-Diihring, Feuerbach and the End of Classical German Philosophy and Dialectics of Nature are the writings most elaborated upon by the author, who, refuting efforts to draw a line between Marx and Engels as regards their later followers, stresses Engels's contribution to Marxism. She argues that his contribution to dialectical materialism is still important for a clarification of topical issues, and makes some comments on the vicissitudes of diamat in the USSR. A chronology of Engels's life and an annotated bibliography are appended. HARTMANN, KLAUS. Die Marxsche Theorie. Eine philosophische Unter- suchung zu den Hauptschriften. Walter de Gruyter & Co, Berlin 1970. xii, 593 pp. DM 78.00. The author of this learned study undertakes a re-appraisal of Marx's theory from a purely philosophical angle. He criticizes Popper's theses (and lack of understanding of Hegelianism), but his own refutation of Marxian views brings him closer to Popper's. It is denied that a dialectical process going on in reality could justifiably be made to fit in the chain of historical necessity. Besides Marx's more philosophical writings all his major works, especially Capital, come up for discussion. Interesting are the comments on Marxist and non-Marxist evaluations of our time (Sartre, Habermas etc.). WILDERMUTH, ARMIN. Marx und die Verwirklichung der Philosophic. COMMON PERSPECTIVES IN POST-COLONIAL INDIAN AND AFRICAN FICTION IN ENGLISH ABSTRACT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF Bottor of IN ENGLISH LITERATURE BY AMINA KISHORE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ALIGARH MUSLIIVI UNIVERSITY ALIGARH 1995 Abstract The introduction of the special paper on Commonwealth Literature at the Post Graduate level and the paper called 'Novel other than British and American' at the Under Graduate level at AMU were the two major eventualities which led to this study. In the paper offered to the M A students, the grouping together of Literatures from atleast four of the Commonwealth nations into one paper was basically a makeshift arrangement. The objectives behind the formulation of such separate area as courses for special study remained vaguely described and therefore unjustified. The teacher and students, were both uncertain as to why and how to hold the disparate units together. The study emerges out of such immediate dilemma and it hopes to clarify certain problematic concerns related to the student of the Commonwealth Literature. Most Commonwealth criticism follows either (a) a justificatory approach; or (b) a confrontationist approach; In approach (a) usually a defensive stand is taken by local critics and a supportive non-critical, indulgent stand is adopted by the Western critic. In both cases, the issue of language use, nomenclature and the event cycle of colonial history are the routes by which the argument is moved. Approach (b) invariably adopts the Post-Colonial Discourse as its norm of presenting the argument. According to this approach, the commonness of Commonwealth Literatures emerges from the fact that all these Literatures have walked ••• through the fires of enslavement and therefore are anguished, embattled units of creative expression. -

David Jackson DEPARTMENT OF SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE <[email protected]> Tel. 432-7608 -- 82-90 Wall Street, Room 224 Description This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Brazil’s regions and cultural history, to Brazil’s unique place in the Americas, and to its place in the world of Portuguese language. It presents major topics in the panorama of Brazilian cultural history and civilization from 1500 to the present through readings on regions, cultures, peoples, and arts, including the architects of Brazil’s national cultural identity, its chronological development, and modern self-description. Topics include discovery and rediscovery of Brazil, baroque architecture, romanticism and empire, regionalism, immigration, urbanization, and modernization. The main texts draw on a cultural history of Brazil through selected writings by major authors and scholars. The course features an individual creative project on the student’s experience in Brazil to be presented in Portuguese during the final two classes. Requirements No absences allowed in YSS. Two objective tests during weeks 3 and 6 (40%) covering important names, documents, and events from the readings. Preparation and oral participation in each class discussion required (20%). Each student will prepare an original project on a specific interest in Brazil, coordinated with the professor (25%), presented in class on July 20. -

Introduction This paper analyzes two novels on the colonization of the Americas and the representation of indigenous populations. In El entenado, Saer presents a more realistic representation of indigenous populations and the experience of colonization, while Alencar’s Iracema presents a more idealized version of history. Throughout this paper, I compare various components of the two novels to explain how the two novels differ but complement each other at the same time. The aspects analyzed are the language utilized by the authors, narration, syntax, symbolism and form. The paper is finished by a re-reading of Iracema through Saer’s lens which demonstrates the complementary nature of the two works and the need to read the two together. -

Revista Europea de Estudios Latinoamericanos y del Caribe 80, abril de 2006 | 25 A Mestizo and Tropical Country: The Creation of the Official Image of Independent Brazil Lilia Moritz Schwarcz In 1838, sixteen years after the political independence of Brazil, a new institution was created – the IHGB (Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute) – dedicated to the drafting of a new historical agenda, one more clearly identified with the young country now emancipated from its former Portuguese metropolis. Even more interesting was its first open competition, organized in 1844, whose title, ‘How to write the History of Brazil’, already revealed the institution’s intentions. First prize went to the acclaimed German scientist Karl von Martius, who advo- cated the idea that the country should define itself through its unrivalled mix of peoples and colours: ‘The focal point for the historian ought to be to show how, in the development of Brazil, established conditions are to be found for the perfecting of the three human races, placed here side by side in a manner hitherto unknown’. Drawing upon the metaphor of the Portuguese heritage as a powerful river that should ‘absorb the streams of the races India and Ethiopica’, he envisaged the emergence of a Brazil characterized by its unique miscegenation. It is no accident that the then recently installed Brazilian monarchy invested so much in a tropical symbology that mixed the traditional elements of European monarchies with some indigenous peoples and a few Blacks, and included a lot of fruit. Though it was complicated to highlight the Black participation because of the memory of slavery, this did not prevent the royalty from painting a picture of a country characterized by its own distinct racial colouration. -

A major exponent of the Brazilian Romanticism and of the literary tradition known as "Indianism", he is famous for writing the poem "Canção do exílio", arguably the most well-known poem of the Brazilian literature, the short epic poem I-Juca- Pirama, and many other nationalist and patriotic poems that would later give him the title of national poet of Brazil. He was also an avid researcher of the Brazilian indigenous languages and folklore. He is the patron of the 15th chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. <b>Biography</b> Antônio Gonçalves Dias was born in Caxias on August 10, 1823, to Portuguese João Manuel Gonçalves Dias and cafuza Vicência Ferreira. After completing his studies in Latin, French and Philosophy, he went in 1838 to Portugal to earn a degree in Law at the University of Coimbra. There, he got in contact with the Romantic ideals and wrote his critically acclaimed poem "Canção do exílio". He graduated in 1845 and returned to Brazil in the same year. He goes to Rio de Janeiro, living there until 1854. There, he wrote the drama Leonor de Mendonça in 1846 and his first poetry book, Primeiros Cantos, in 1847. In 1848, he wrote two more poetry books: Segundos Cantos and Sextilhas de Frei Antão. In 1849 he became professor of Latin and History at the Colégio Pedro II. -

ISBN 978-80-7394-006-5 Ernest Thompson Seton and the Canadian Wilderness Imaginary: The Realistic Illusion of Nature Andrea Dancer University of British Columbia Abstract: I am interested in bringing complexity to the discourse around intrinsic human-ness as an ideological construct. In my research into Ernest Thompson Seton, Indian-ism1 and the natural world, I examine the concept of the human through the political deployment of the natural world. This paper is a preliminary exploration of Seton’s animal stories, illustrations and paintings as socially constructed concepts of nature, as appropriated space produced and reproduced by dominant power structures. My interest is specifically how these so-termed natural spaces are constructed, activated and manipulated – as well as resisted. I. The Theoretical Topography According to Henry Lefebvre, a Marxist theorist of space and place, space is “logico- epistimological space, the space of social practice, the space occupied by sensory phenomena, including the products of the imagination such as projects and projections, symbols and utopias” (Lefebvre 1991:11). Spatial practice embraces the production and reproduction of social formations. Each member of a given society is always-already constructed by that produced and reproduced space (powerful in its singularity); space governed by sedimented layers of mutable power relationships. The question is one of who benefits from these relationships and how. To glimpse these dynamics, I am borrowing Lefebvre’s use of the idea of nature as politicized space which is made up of fragments of nature located at sites which were chosen for their intrinsic qualities (cave, mountaintop, spring, river), but whose very consecration ended up stripping them of their natural characteristics and uniqueness.
