Mapping Orientalism: Three Case Histories In order to understand Orientalism it is necessary to realize, as Vincent T. Harlow has noted, that there were “two British empires.” The first empire consisted of the colonies in America and the West Indies and was established in the seventeenth century, with the explorations in the Pacific, and the trading networks that developed with Asia and Africa. The “second British empire” dates from 1783 and resulted from the loss of America, which in turn forced Britain to formulate new ideas about and approaches to its empire. The Colonial Office was set up in 1801, and, as Harlow observed, Britain experienced a “Swing to the East,” to India and the Asian colonies (Harlow, 2:1–11). The conquests of India (1798–1804) expanded Britain’s empire to such an extent that the losses of America and the old West Indian colonies were not felt economically (Johnson, 13–14), and given the success of the British Raj after 1813 and especially 1857, it seems clear that the imperial desire was to keep the profits of the East while maintaining as strict a social and intellectual distance as possible from its cultures and peoples. Although the nature and continuously changing shape of the British Empire has been subject to a fair amount of debate and is still a controversial topic, we begin this volume with an attempt to map the rough contours of the shifting Brit- ish Empire in order to historically situate this collection of essays. We also begin with a premise: literature written about or out of an awareness of this empire participated in an ongoing, complex attempt to understand what it meant for the British to come into contact with other alien (both attractive and repellent) societies, languages, cultures, and religions. Or, as the bishop of Avila so succinctly observed to Queen Isabella in 1492, “Language is the perfect instrument of empire” (quoted in Hulme, 1). 1 HH&C_intro_3rd.indd&C_intro_3rd.indd 1 110/4/20060/4/2006 44:24:55:24:55 PPMM / Introduction We begin this volume, therefore, by mapping three exemplars of Oriental pleasure travel as tropes for the readers of this book. By situating three par- ticular individuals in three Orientalist costumes and then positioning those costumed bodies against the journeys that they undertook throughout what they understood as the “Oriental” world, we intend to suggest the topics that will be addressed in this volume. We also intend by selecting these three case studies to map the Oriental social body and body politic, with three different gendered states represented (female, bisexual, and male), and three differ- ent realms (the private, the spectacularly public, and the private within the public space). Finally, our three case studies represent the most acceptable types of travelers to the Orient (the elite lady, the potentate, and the religious devotee). We might also add that the travels of these three individuals cover most of the recognized areas of the “Oriental” world during the time period that we are addressing (from Spain, to the Levant, Turkey, Albania and the Ottoman Empire, and finally India). As James Clifford has noted in Routes, “travels and contacts are crucial sites for an unfinished modernity,” while it is more accurate to understand the “human location as constituted by displacement rather than stasis” (1). Europe, as he observes, has been “constantly remade, and traversed, by influ- ences beyond its borders” (3). The travels undertaken during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by a number of Europeans can be seen as mani- festations of Clifford’s observation. British citizens traveling throughout the Oriental world did so not simply because they were motivated by adventure, economic exploitation, or cultural objectification, but actually for much more complex and reciprocal reasons. They were not seeking some “Oriental Other” to appropriate or control (as Edward Said has claimed in Oriental- ism). They were doing something much more interesting and complex: they were hybridizing (as Homi Bhabha has defined the concept) and moderniz- ing. In fact, to understand where critical approaches to Orientalism are now, one needs to consider the valuable observation made by Timothy Powell: It has become clear in recent years . that a binary form of analysis that collapses a myriad of distinct culture voices into the overly simplistic cat- egory of “Other” defined in relationship to a European “Self” is theoretically problematic. The time has come, therefore, to initiate a new critical epoch, a period of cultural reconstruction in which “identity” is reconfigured in the midst of a multiplicity of cultural influences that more closely resembles what Homi Bhabha has called the “lived perplexity” of people’s lives. The stories that recount their adoption of native dress—as well as the maps of their journeys—become what we will identify as fitting sites for analyzing the emerging representa- tional strategies that are to be found in British Orientalist literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Hence, their examples concretely illus- trate the ongoing importance of and critical interest in British Orientalism as a more complex, nondualistic paradigm. As Daniel Carey has demonstrated about early modern cultural exchange, English writers consistently stressed “the potential interchangeability of self and other rather than the radical opposition between the two” (34).

ANDREY KELIN, PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION, AT THE 1045th MEETING OF THE OSCE PERMANENT COUNCIL 19 March 2015 On the growth of racism, radicalism and neo-Nazism in the OSCE area Mr. Chairperson, The growth in manifestations of racism, violent extremism, aggressive nationalism and neo-Nazism remain, as ever, one of the most serious threats in the OSCE area. Unfortunately, the work in the OSCE to combat the spread of radical and neo-Nazi views within society is not being done systematically. Despite commitments in this area, there is no single OSCE action plan as there is for combating trafficking in human beings, improving the situation of Roma and Sinti or promoting gender equality. Every OSCE country has its problems connected with the growth of radicalism and nationalistic extremism. Russia is not immune to these abhorrent phenomena either. The approaches to resolving these problems in the OSCE participating States vary though. In our country, there is a package of comprehensive measures in place, ranging from criminal to practical, to nip these threats in the bud. Neo-Nazis and anyone else who incites racial hatred are either in prison or will end up there sooner or later. However, in many countries, including those that are proud to count themselves among the established democracies, people close their eyes to such phenomena or justify these activities with reference to freedom of speech, assembly and association. We are surprised at the position taken by the European Union, which attempts to find justification for neo-Nazi demonstrations and gatherings sometimes through particular historical circumstances and grievances and sometimes under the banner of democracy.

She argues that his contribution to dialectical materialism is still important for a clarification of topical issues, and makes some comments on the vicissitudes of diamat in the USSR. Walter de Gruyter & Co, Berlin 1970. xii, 593 pp. DM 78.00. The author of this learned study undertakes a re-appraisal of Marx's theory from a purely philosophical angle. He criticizes Popper's theses (and lack of understanding of Hegelianism), but his own refutation of Marxian views brings him closer to Popper's. It is denied that a dialectical process going on in reality could justifiably be made to fit in the chain of historical necessity. Besides Marx's more philosophical writings all his major works, especially Capital, come up for discussion. In the paper offered to the M A students, the grouping together of Literatures from atleast four of the Commonwealth nations into one paper was basically a makeshift arrangement. The objectives behind the formulation of such separate area as courses for special study remained vaguely described and therefore unjustified. The teacher and students, were both uncertain as to why and how to hold the disparate units together. The study emerges out of such immediate dilemma and it hopes to clarify certain problematic concerns related to the student of the Commonwealth Literature. Most Commonwealth criticism follows either (a) a justificatory approach; or (b) a confrontationist approach; In approach (a) usually a defensive stand is taken by local critics and a supportive non-critical, indulgent stand is adopted by the Western critic. In both cases, the issue of language use, nomenclature and the event cycle of colonial history are the routes by which the argument is moved. Approach (b) invariably adopts the Post-Colonial Discourse as its norm of presenting the argument. According to this approach, the commonness of Commonwealth Literatures emerges from the fact that all these Literatures have walked ••• through the fires of enslavement and therefore are anguished, embattled units of creative expression.

Ackerknecht (1973) characterized the pharmacotherapy of this period as a "chaotic mixture of chemiatric and Galenistic practices", yet acknowledged an "increasing tendency toward empiricism, partly even true experimentalism". This thesis explores this transitional phase for the first time in depth, examining the relations between pharmacological experimentation, theory-building, and therapeutic practice. Furthermore, ethical aspects are highlighted. The general introduction discusses the secondary literature and presents the results of a systematic study of pharmacological articles in relevant 18th-century periodicals. The identified main areas of contemporary interest, the spectrum of methods applied, and the composition of the authorship are described and interpreted.

This article sheds light on the modalities of authority that exist in a traditional religious seminary or Dar al-Uloom (hereon abbreviated to DU) in modern Britain. Based on unprecedented insider access and detailed ethnography, the paper considers how two groups of teachers, the senior and the younger generation, acquire and shine their authoritative light in unique ways. The article asserts that within the senior teachers an elect group of ‘luminaries’ exemplify a deep level of learning combined with practice and embodiment, while the remaining teachers are granted authority by virtue of the Prophetic light, or Hadith, they radiate. The younger generation of British-born teachers, however, are the torchbearers at the leading edge of directing the DU. While it may take time for them to acquire the social and symbolic capital of the senior teachers, operationally, they are the ones illuminating the way forward. The paper discusses the implications of the changing nature of authority within the DU is likely to have for Muslims in Britain. It considers how practitioners from diverse disciplinary backgrounds circulated knowledge about the built environment of pharaonic ruins: monuments, architecture, burials, and soil mounds that remained in situ. I trace the development of Egyptology from an activity that could be practiced long-distance through a network of informants to one that required first-hand field experience.

    David Buchanan They Call it the Hajji Mall he first time I heard the word, hajji, it didn’t even register. Until a few months ago, I was certain that my first encounter with the word happened in a cafeteria on an American Air Force base in the United Arab Emirates Tin 2007. I was wrong. I had just completed a rough draft of this essay when I accidentally stumbled upon an old email on my computer from my first deployment in 2005. Following a hunch, I searched my hard drive for the word “hajji” and then read the following line from a message that I had sent my brother from my base in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: “Left base today and bought some stuff at a market just outside our front gate. They call it the Hajji Mall.” My brother has a frustratingly strong memory, and he responded to my email that same day: “Hadji was Johnny Quest’s sidekick.” He was right. In the Johnny Quest cartoon series (first aired in 1964), Hadji is a 12-year-old orphan from Calcutta. He is the adopted brother of the protagonist/hero Johnny Quest; he knows judo; he is quick to deliver whatever wisdom the adventure of the episode demands. What the creators of Johnny Quest ignored, and what I did not realize (despite six semesters studying Arabic in college) was that the word hajji is an Anglicized, phonetic representation of a very real, and very specific word in the Arabic language. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, hajji (sometimes spelled hadji, haji, or hogie) is defined as “The title given to one who has made the greater pilgrimage .
