Norman Golb (The Oriental Institute, University of Chicago) THE MESSIANIC PRETENDER SOLOMON IBN AL-RUJI AND HIS SON MENAHEM (THE SO-CALLED “DAVID ALROY”) (Kurdistan, First Half of the 12th Century) The earliest source describing the messianic pretension initiated by Solomon ibn al-Ruji in Kurdistan is the historical memoir of Obadiah the Proselyte, who apparently learned of it while sojourning in Baghdad approximately a decade after its inception during the Egyptian vezirate of al-Afdal (exercised power from 1094 to 1121). Obadiah’s Hebrew statement may be rendered into English as follows: In those days there arose “children of the violent” among the nation of Israel, who lifted up their souls to establish a vision and stumbled in their words. In the mountains of Assyria, in the land of Hakkeriya, there arose a certain Jew named Solomon ben Ruji, the name of whose son was Menahem; and with them was a glib man named Ephraim b. R. Azariah the Jerusalemite, known as ben Fadhlun. They wrote letters to all the Jews near and far in all the lands which were round about them, so that their renown and the contents of their letters reached a far distance. Unto all the places which are upon the face of the earth where the Jews are scattered amongst all the nations beneath the heavens did their renown reach. All of them said that the time had come when the Lord would gather his nation Israel from all the lands unto Jerusalem the holy city, and that Solomon b. Ruji was the King Messiah. -

JEWS AND GENDER IN BRITISH LITERATURE 18 15-1865 NADIA DEBORAH VALMAN PhD Queen Mary and Westfield College University of London 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the variety of relationships between Jews and gender in early to mid-nineteenth century British literature, focussing particularly on representations of and by Jewish women. It reconstructs the social, political and literary context in which writers produced images and narratives about Jews, and considers to what extent stereotypes were reproduced, appropriated, or challenged. In particular it examines the ways in which questions of gender were linked to ideas about religious or racial difference in the Victorian period. The study situates literary representations of Jews within the context of contemporary debates about the participation of the Jews in the life of the modern state. It also investigates the ways in which these political debates were gendered, looking in particular at the relationship between the cultural construction of femininity and English national identity. It first considers Victorian culture's obsession with Rebecca, the Jewess created in Walter Scott's influential novel Ivanhoe (1819). It examines Rebecca's refusal to convert to Christianity in the context of Scott's discussion of racial separatism and modern national unity. Evangelical writers like Annie Webb, Amelia Bristow and Mrs Brendlah were prolific literary producers, and preoccupied with converting Jewish women. Particularly during the 18'40s and 1850s, evangelical writing provided an important forum for the construction and consolidation of women's national identity. Grace Aguilar's writing was an attempt to understand Jewish identity within the terms of Victorian domestic ideology. -

Its Messianic nature and the role of the Jewish Exilarch By Ben Abrahamson and Joseph Katz Abstract: Explores the conquests of Jerusalem in 614CE and 638CE within the context of previous attempts at Jewish restoration. Discusses reasons for a Persian-Jewish alliance and later a Judeo-Arab alliance. In an attempt to reconcile contemporary sources, an account is given of Babylonian Jewish Exilarch Nechemiah ben Hushiel, his brother Shallum (Salmaan Farsi) and nephew Yakov (Ka'b Al-Ahbar) who played pivotal roles in these conquests. Proposes that the twelve men who went to Mecca to meet with the Prophet were Jewish refugees from Edessa, by way of Medina. Suggesting that the authors of Sefer Zerubavel and of the Prayer of Shimon Roman Invitations and Jewish attempts bar Yochai were Jews from Medina. to rebuild the Temple Jerusalem and the Temple, attempts at 70 C.E., Temple is Destroyed restoration 100 C.E., Trajan gives Jews permission to rebuild the Temple which, however, they neither could nor would make any use. After the destruction of the Jewish Temple (70 C.E) and subsequent Jewish Revolt (135 C.E.), 118 C.E., Hadrian allows the Jews to return to Jerusalem and Jerusalem passed into the hands of Rome. MacFadyen, Co-Chair This dissertation demonstrates how the work of three contemporary Mizrahi authors (Haviva Pedaya, Albert Swissa, and Dvir Tzur) challenges the postsecular framing of Mizrahi Jewish practice as masortiyut (“traditionism”), which refers to the flexible form of Jewish observance associated with Arab-Jews in Israel/Palestine. Postsecular critics have mobilized this position to challenge the terms of Jewish national sovereignty. This study claims that, while these writers refuse “masortiyut” as a coherent subject position, they extend certain of its challenges by reconsidering the interaction of the secular and the theological within the nationalist narrative of Shivat Tzion (“the return to Zion”). By means of an allusive engagement with mystical texts, these ii authors reconceive of exile as a reparative condition rather than as a defective state. -

Six Thousand Miles to Home: A Guide for Readers and Teachers This guide collates notes relevant to the socio-cultural and historical contexts of the novel Six Thousand Miles to Home. It is organized according to the narrative’s chronology and divided according to the novel’s three major sections and their respective chapters. Background material—about Jewish life in both Poland and Iran—precedes the sections of the book set in those countries. In between the notes for each chapter are historical “snapshots,” most of them derived from primary source material, and which serve to illustrate events described in the novel. Please check back at this web page for revised versions of this free guide. JEWISH LIFE IN POLAND, SILESIA, AND TESCHEN Numerous volumes recount in detail the thousand-year history of Jews in Poland as well as the circumstances particular to the Silesian Duchy of Teschen and its Jewish inhabitants.1 What follows here is a summary. Medieval Period Jews inhabited Poland since at least the tenth century when, fleeing persecution in German territories, they made their way east.2 One legend recounts that a scrap of paper directed them to “Polaniaya,” a Hebrew name for Poland, which they interpreted as meaning “Here God dwells.” They arrived in a forest where they heard the word Polin, another Hebrew name for Poland, which they interpreted as “Po-lin,” “Rest here.” In some versions [of the legend], a cloud broke and an angel’s hand pointed the way and a voice said “Po-lin.” According to [another] version […], Jews entering the forest discovered tractates of the Talmud carved on the trees; in other versions, pages of the sacred texts floated down.3 This story begins in a town called Teschen (called Cieszyn both before and after the time of this narrative) was populated by Slavic peoples by at least the seventh century.
