Epafras Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (ICRS), Gajah Mada University Yogyakarta, Indonesia email: [email protected] Abstract The present article studies the Jewish-Muslim intimacy through the Jewish language as a cultural space in the period of the medieval Islam. The Judeo-Arabic, as the technical terms of the Jewish language in this period and in the subsequent eras, was one of the many venues through which people negotiated the Jewish identity in the non-Jewish environments. This negotiation was the outcome of intensive meeting between the Arabs’ culture and the Jewish-specific heritages since pre-Islamic era to the period of the medieval Islam in dialectical and contested way. The Arabic language in the Hebrew script was an example of this process. In this article, the author traces back the earlier encounter between the Jews and the Arabs in the proto-Judeo-Arabic, al-yahūdīyyah, which includs the Muslim narrative of both the Prophet Muḥammad and the Jews. Next, this paper studies a later period of the Judeo-Arabic development as a Jewish specific language. The author argues that the Judeo-Arabic demonstrates a cultural symbiosis and a frontier of interaction between the Jews and the Muslims marked by the way Muslims and Jews accommodated and contested to each other. Spiritual Journey Author: Ali Hassnain Khan Khichi1 Reccive: 25/03/2019 Accept: 12/10/2019 Problem Statement We will review in this spiritual journey One of the greatest personalities in sacrifice and redemption, he is Hussein bin Ali (Abu Shuhadaa) May Allah be pleased with him, My heart rejoiced and my pen because I have received that honor to write about an honorable person Son of the Master Ali ibn Abi Talib, a pure seed with deep roots in faith. Imam Hussein derives his glory from of the Messenger of Allah Muhammad Peace be upon him. In fact, I do not find much trouble in a flow of ideas which follows one idea after the other about the wonderful example in steadfastness on the right. And I am thirsty for the moment when the article will be finished to start reading it again. When I started in my writing, I did not know much about the subject, but when I read the references and resources and studied the details of Imam's life, I was surprised with many meanings that added a lot to my personality. When we talk about this great person we must mention the environment in which he grew up and the family from which he descended. They are a family of the Prophet Muhammad (Ahl Albeit), , who are distinguished by good deeds, redemption and sacrifice, the reason for their preference was their commitment to the method of God and they paid precious cost to become the word of God is the highest. َ ََّ ُ ْ َ ْ ُ ْ َ ْ َ ُ َ ْ )1( )إن َما ُيريد ُالله لُيذه َب عنك ُم َّالر ْج َس أهل ال َبْيت َو ُيط َّه َرك ْم تطه ًيرا( ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ The Holy Prophet Muhammad has recommended all Muslims to love (Ahl Albeit) and keep them in mind. -

The first chapter deals with the po litical, social and religious background of ‘ Abd al-M alik, and relates this to his later policy on becoming caliph. Chapter II is devoted to the ‘ Alid opposition of the period, i.e . the revolt of al-Mukhtar ibn Abi ‘ Ubaid al-Thaqafi, and its nature, causes and consequences. The ‘ Asabiyya(tribal feuds), a dominant phenomenon of the Umayyad period, is examined in the third chapter. An attempt is made to throw light on its causes, and on the policies adopted by ‘ Abd al-M alik to contain it. -

Two eras covered are here in two parts; the Achaemenid and Sassanian Empires, the first and last of the Pre-Islamic Persian dynasties. This ancestry begins with a connection of the Persian kings to the Greek mythology according to Plato. I have included these kind of connections between myth and history, the reader may decide if and where such a connection really takes place. King or Shah Cyrus the Great established the first dynasty of Persia about 550 BC. A special list, “Byzantine Emperors” is inserted (at page 27) after the first part showing the lineage from early Egyptian rulers to Cyrus the Great and to the last king of that dynasty, Artaxerxes II, whose daughter Rodogune became a Queen of Armenia. Their descendants tie into our lineage listed in my books about our lineage from our Byzantine, Russia and Poland. The second begins with King Ardashir I, the 59th great grandfather, reigned during 226-241 and ens with the last one, King Yazdagird III, the 43rd great grandfather, reigned during 632 – 651. He married Maria, a Byzantine Princess, which ties into our Byzantine Ancestry. -

Arabia before Islam Richard N. Frye Just as trade had been the dominant feature of Arabia in an earlier period so now religion became the leitmotif of the era under discussion. Not that trade lost its importance, but after the fall of the Roman Empire the demand for luxury goods from the east subsided. Also there was not the great quantity of gold available to pay for the imports, and India still sought gold in payment for spices. It was not until the sixth century when the Byzantine and Sasanian Empires had become stabilized that new demands for eastern luxuries became so important that trade in silk, spices and perfumes had a great influence on the politics of the time. But common people were more concerned with religion. The written sources which have survived are almost exclusively religious, in contrast to the earlier period where secular documents are available. From the third century of our era religion usurped all other activities in the concerns of people. This is reflected not only in writings but in art and architecture and indeed in every aspect of life. The period from the fourth to the eighth century could be called the age of religions. Another difference between the earlier and later periods of the history of Arabia is that earlier the cultural influence, as well as the migrations of tribes, went from south to north, for south Arabian civilization was more advanced than the north. But from the fourth to the eighth century of our era the reverse obtains; south Arabian tribes underwent the influence of north Arabia. -

26 Potter Chapter 2 Measuring the Power of the Roman Empire David Potter By the age of Cicero – the point at which they began to recognize the fact that they controlled a territorial empire and could raise revenue from it – the Ro- mans were accustomed to measure their power with criteria taken over whole- sale from Greek theory. In the De Legibus, Cicero says simply that senators ought to know the state of the army, the treasury, the allies, friends and tribu- taries of Rome and the nature of the attachment of each to Rome. For Cicero this is what it was to “know the State.”1 In these terms power is a function of income and manpower. Such a measurement, which, as we shall see, would have a long history going forward, was even then being amply employed by Gaius Caesar in his Gallic Wars, and had a long prior history in Greek thought. Caesar famously illustrated the power of the various Gallic and German tribes he subdued or encountered by telling his readers how many of them there were or had been. Good of the Helvetians to have produced a census docu- ment (in Greek no less) attesting to the fact that there were 368,000 of them at the beginning of their migration. There were now a mere 110,000 going home.
