I am particularly indebted to Mr. Gonzalez, who willingly stepped in as supervisor at short notice, and without whose commitment, support and encouragement this study would not have been possible. Mr. Mitchell gave much valuable advice and assistance, especially in the early stages of the work, and I am also grateful to other members, staff and students, of the Institute of Latin American Studies in Glasgow for their encouragement during my period of study there. Professor Gerald Martin of Portsmouth Polytechnic made comments and suggestions concerning various aspects of the work which were much appreciated. Finally, thanks are also due to the institutions in Brazil which provided me with assistance during my field work, namely the Casa de Rui Barbosa in Rio de Janeiro and the Instituto Joaquim Nabuco in Recife, and to Brazilian collegues and friends too numerous to mention. c o m a i s SUMMARY ................. i- INTRQDUCTIQN. - The debate around the ideology of national culture................................................ 1 - The debate in Brazil..................................9 - Notes for the Introduction.......................... 24 CHAPTER I: THE DEVELOPMENT OF ERUDITE LITERATURE IN THE NORTH EAST QF BRAZIL UNTIL THE END OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. - Regionalism and cultural nationalism................ 26 - The colonial period.................................. 38 - The early nineteenth century:.Romanticism. ......... 54 - The late nineteenth century: .. realism and naturalism.............................................71 - Notes for chapter 1. ............................... 89 CHAPTER ..111 THE DEVELOPMENT QF. BETWEEN ERUDITE LITERATURE AND PQPULftR CULTURE. IN THE NORTH EAST QF BRAZIL; ARIANO SUASSUNA mum, m ittENTtLftfmiftL The basic objectives of this study may be summarized as follows, Firstly, the work aims to highlight the crucial differences between the erudite literary tradition of North East Brazil and the popular cultural expressions of the region, especially the popular poetic or romanceiro tradition, showing how those differences are rooted in the contrasting objective conditions within which the respective literatures are produced, Secondly, the study follows the attempts made through the years by erudite writers of the North East to overcome the problem of those cultural divisions and incorporate elements of popular culture into their work in an effort to affirm a distinctly regional identity, This leads on to a third objective of the study, that of tracing the broad historical development of North East regionalist literature, indicating the principal transitions it has undergone in response to changing perceptions of national culture, regional identity and popular culture, Finally, the study presents an analysis of the work of Ariano Suassuna, seen as the major contribution to this regionalist artistic tradition in recent decades, Chapter 1 reviews the historical development of erudite literature in the North East of Brazil from the colonial era to the end of the nineteenth century, Chapter 2 continues to trace that development through the twentieth century, up to the present, Chapter 3 examines the origins and evolution of the romanceiro tradition and its development into a written form, the folheto, and then studies the role of the folheto within poor rural and urban communities of the North East, the themes it deals with, and the profound changes it has experienced in the last few decades, Chapter 4 traces the development of the cultural and aesthetic theories of Ariano Suassuna, culminating in the launching of the (iovimento Armorial in 1970, Chapter 5 assesses Suassuna’s main contribution to the movement, his novels Q.Romanse_dL.ft„Efidia.dfl.Mna (1971), and Ao Sol da Qnga Caetana (1976), The conclusions emphasise: (1) That the assimilation of popular culture into erudite literature of the North East has produced work of outstanding quality and originality, but which has also frequently embodied the contradictions inherent in the schemes of cultural nationalism and regional affirmation which have provided inspiration for so many of the writers concerned, (2) That the distinctive qualities of the popular poetry of the North East can only be understood within its social context, and that the tendency of certain writers and critics to separate it from that context necessarily transforms those qualities in fundamental ways, (3) That the work of Suassuna offers an original contribution in terms of its direct employment of popular poetry, but that his theories on culture, which must be understood as a crystallization of many ideas elaborated in previous eras, are still unable to deal adequately with the deep divisions and contradictions within North East society, Unlike previous studies of Suassuna's work, this research considers it within a broad historical context in an attempt to find new perspectives for understanding and interpreting it, Also for the first time, this study places the development of his work within the context of the significant transitions undergone by the whole debate on national culture and popular culture between the 1950*s and the early 1980's; transitions which were directly linked to broader political and cultural changes in Brazil. INTRODUCTION The debate around the ideology of national culture, The origins of the present day concept of national culture -based on the notion of a state unified by fundamental common characteristics, such as race, language, shared beliefs or perceptions -are generally traced

BIBLIOGRAPHY GENERAL ISSUES RELIGIONS AND PHILOSOPHY FIORANI, ELEONORA. Friedrich Engels e il materialismo dialettico. Feltrinelli Editore, Milano 1971. 272 pp. L. 3000. Engels's Anti-Diihring, Feuerbach and the End of Classical German Philosophy and Dialectics of Nature are the writings most elaborated upon by the author, who, refuting efforts to draw a line between Marx and Engels as regards their later followers, stresses Engels's contribution to Marxism. She argues that his contribution to dialectical materialism is still important for a clarification of topical issues, and makes some comments on the vicissitudes of diamat in the USSR. A chronology of Engels's life and an annotated bibliography are appended. HARTMANN, KLAUS. Die Marxsche Theorie. Eine philosophische Unter- suchung zu den Hauptschriften. Walter de Gruyter & Co, Berlin 1970. xii, 593 pp. DM 78.00. The author of this learned study undertakes a re-appraisal of Marx's theory from a purely philosophical angle. He criticizes Popper's theses (and lack of understanding of Hegelianism), but his own refutation of Marxian views brings him closer to Popper's. It is denied that a dialectical process going on in reality could justifiably be made to fit in the chain of historical necessity. Besides Marx's more philosophical writings all his major works, especially Capital, come up for discussion. Interesting are the comments on Marxist and non-Marxist evaluations of our time (Sartre, Habermas etc.). WILDERMUTH, ARMIN. Marx und die Verwirklichung der Philosophic. Pérez Fall 2010 The Limits of the Letter: The Politics of Representation and Margins in Latin American Vanguard Writings of the 1950s and 60s Copyright 2010 by Adam Joseph Shellhorse Abstract The Limits of the Letter: The Politics of Representation and Margins in Latin American Vanguard Writings of the 1950s and 60s by Adam Joseph Shellhorse Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic Languages and Literatures University of California, Berkeley Professor Ana Maria Mão-de-Ferro Martinho, Chair Throughout this study, I theorize and explore the consequences of the self-reflexive text in the literary writings of João Cabral de Melo Neto, Osman Lins, and David Viñas. I argue that what unites these writers is not solely the context of neocolonialism and underdevelopment in the 1950s and 60s in Brazil and Argentina but the properly vanguard problem and gesture of mediating the present and politics, as I trace in their theoretical writings, letters and literary texts their shared concern with making literature relevant, functional and dynamic in a public sphere

Translating Brazil: From Transnational Periodicals to Hemispheric Fictions, 1808-2010 By Krista Marie Brune A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic Languages and Literatures in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Natalia Brizuela, Co-chair Professor Candace Slater, Co-chair Professor Scott Saul Spring 2016 Abstract Translating Brazil: From Transnational Periodicals to Hemispheric Fictions, 1808-2010 by Krista Marie Brune Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic Languages and Literatures University of California, Berkeley Professor Natalia Brizuela, Co-chair Professor Candace Slater, Co-chair This dissertation analyzes how travel and translation informed the construction of Brazil as modern in the 19th century, and how similar processes of transnational translation continue to shape the cultural visibility of the nation abroad in the contemporary moment. By reading journals, literary works, and cultural criticism, this study inserts Brazilian literature and culture into recent debates about translatability, world literature, and cosmopolitanism, while also underscoring the often-overlooked presence of Brazilians in the United States. The first half of the dissertation contends that Portuguese-language periodicals Correio Braziliense (London, 1808-1822), Revista Nitheroy (Paris, 1836), and O Novo Mundo (New York, 1870-1879) translated European and North American ideas of technology and education to a readership primarily in Brazil. The transnational circulation of these periodicals contributed to the self- fashioning of intellectuals who came to define the nation. To suggest parallels between Brazil and the United States in the late 19th century, the analysis of O Novo Mundo focuses on discourses of nation, modernity, and technological progress emerging in the hemispheric travels of scientists, intellectuals, and the Brazilian empire Dom Pedro II, and in the national displays at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.

• Common Perspectives in Post-Colonial Indian and African Fiction in English
COMMON PERSPECTIVES IN POST-COLONIAL INDIAN AND AFRICAN FICTION IN ENGLISH ABSTRACT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF Bottor of IN ENGLISH LITERATURE BY AMINA KISHORE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ALIGARH MUSLIIVI UNIVERSITY ALIGARH 1995 Abstract The introduction of the special paper on Commonwealth Literature at the Post Graduate level and the paper called 'Novel other than British and American' at the Under Graduate level at AMU were the two major eventualities which led to this study. In the paper offered to the M A students, the grouping together of Literatures from atleast four of the Commonwealth nations into one paper was basically a makeshift arrangement. The objectives behind the formulation of such separate area as courses for special study remained vaguely described and therefore unjustified. The teacher and students, were both uncertain as to why and how to hold the disparate units together. The study emerges out of such immediate dilemma and it hopes to clarify certain problematic concerns related to the student of the Commonwealth Literature. Most Commonwealth criticism follows either (a) a justificatory approach; or (b) a confrontationist approach; In approach (a) usually a defensive stand is taken by local critics and a supportive non-critical, indulgent stand is adopted by the Western critic. In both cases, the issue of language use, nomenclature and the event cycle of colonial history are the routes by which the argument is moved. Approach (b) invariably adopts the Post-Colonial Discourse as its norm of presenting the argument. According to this approach, the commonness of Commonwealth Literatures emerges from the fact that all these Literatures have walked ••• through the fires of enslavement and therefore are anguished, embattled units of creative expression.
