The Impact of Matriarchal Traditions on the Advancement of Ashanti Women in Ghana Karen McGee What is the impact of a matriarchal tradition and the tradition of an African queenmothership on the ability of African women to advance in political, educational, and economic spheres in their countries? The Ashanti tribe of the Man people is the largest tribe in Ghana; it is a matrilineal society. A description of the precolonial matriarchal tradition among the Ashanti people of Ghana, an analysis of how the matriarchal concept has evolved in more contemporary governments and political situations in Ghana, and an analysis of the status of women in modern Ghana may provide some insight into the impact of the queenmothership concept. -

Schlegel and the Nineteenth-Century Damnatio of Euripides Ernst Behler N HIS 1802-04 Berlin lectures on aesthetics, August Wilhelm Schle I gel claimed that his younger brother Friedrich (in his essay On the Study of Greek Poetry U795]), had been the first in the modern age to discern the "immeasurable gulf" separating Euripides from Aeschylus and Sophocles, thereby reviving an attitude the Greeks themselves had assumed towards the poet. The elder Schlegel noted that certain contemporaries of Euripides felt the "deep decline" both in his tragic art and in the music of the time: Aristophanes, with his unrelenting satire, had been assigned by God as Euripides' "eternal scourge"; 1 Plato, in reproaching the poets for fostering the passionate state of mind through excessive emotionalism, actually pointed to Euripides (SK I 40). Schlegel believed that his younger brother's observation of the profound difference between Euripides and the two other Greek tragedians was an important intuition that required detailed critical and comparative analysis for sufficient development (SK II 359). By appropriating this task as his own, August Wilhelm Schlegel inaugurated a phenomenon that we may describe as the nineteenth-century damnatio of Euripides. The condemnation of Euripides by these early German romantics was no extravagant and isolated moment in their critical activity: it constituted a central event in the progressive formation of a new literary theory. Their pronouncements must be seen in the context of a larger movement, towards the end of the eighteenth century, that transformed the critical scene in Europe: the fall of the classicist doctrine and the rise of the new literary theory of romanticism. -

Initially, after the codification of German law in 1900, academic lectures were still based on a study of private law with reference to Roman law, the Pandectists and Germanic law as the basis for comparison. Since 1918, education in law focused only on national law while the legal-historical and comparative possibilities that were available to adapt the law were largely ignored. Students were unable to critically analyse the law or to resist the German socialist-nationalism system. They had no value system against which their own legal system could be tested.” Du Plessis W. 1 Paper Abstract What explains that in patriarchal societies it is the father who passes on his name to his child while in matriarchal societies the child bears the surname of his mother? The biological reality is the same in both cases: it is the woman who bears the child and gives birth to it. Thus the answer does not lie in biological differences but in cultural ones. So far in feminist literature the analysis relies on a patriarchal background. Not many attempts have been made to consider the way gender has been used in matriarchal societies. -

Duncan Macmillan: Introduction 5 INTRODUCT I ON Duncan Macmillan James MacPherson’s Fragments of Ancient Poetry was published in 1760. Within the year, we learn from Howard Gaskill, it was translated into French by Diderot himself.1 In the two and a half centuries that have passed since then, the work has been translated into practically every literary language under the sun and it is likely that, somewhere, it has always been in print. That would be a remarkable bibliographic history for any book, but for a work whose exact nature was a matter of controversy from the day it was published and which has been routinely debunked as a fraud, it is truly extraordinary; nor does Ossian’s topicality seem to be fading even now in this post-modern era. On the contrary, the occasion for the conference whose transactions are recorded in this volume was the exhibition at the UNESCO building in Paris of Calum Colvin’s remarkable series of images, Ossian, Fragments of Ancient Poetry. It is a title which invokes MacPherson directly and the work itself is a striking witness to his enduring topicality. Among the essays below, the artist has contributed an illuminating commentary on his own work, backed by Tom Normand’s contribution which further examines it in the context of the photographic image and its role in the preservation, generation and perhaps even the creation of memory. Ossian, too, is in part at least a created memory. That analogy with an art form not invented till forty years after MacPherson’s death is typical of the way in which, for all that it is deliberately archaic, Ossian appears paradoxically also to be precociously modern. -

Masud Rana Jazan University, Jazan, Saudi Arabia Amina Rashid Jazan University, Jazan, Saudi Arabia Feminist literary theory underpins literature from matriarchal perspective revolting against prototype patriarchal ritual i.e. established dogmatism, superstition, close-eyed religious propaganda, language engineering and so forth. It questions the textual politics of dissipating womankind in literature. It shatters long-cherishing outlook of gender inequality, gender politics, power relation, sexual objectification, oppression, patriarchy, stereotyping and so on. In this connection, this theory sees women along with their experiences, thinking, language, position and role playing, cultural conditioning, diction, and above all, matriarchal assertion in literature. Feminist literary criticism has been generated from feminism and the basic aim of the theory is to investigate and trace out how female characters have been positioned in literature compared with male characters in terms of social and biological factors of different ages of the past started from antiquity. Feminist literary theory has also deconstructed texts from two different perspectives i.e. text written by men and text written by women. This paper attempts to evalualte feminist literary criticism as a subtle machinery or paradigm of matriarchy not only in avant-garde but also in old texts of literature. http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-8026.2012n62p341 A PREFACE TO A THEORY OF ART-FEAR IN BRAZILIAN LITERATURE Julio França Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro Luciano Cabral da Silva Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro Abstract There is no tradition in the study of horror in Brazilian literature; with Álvares de Azevedo”s tales of Noite na Taverna generally considered as the only example of Gothic, terror or horror narrative quoted in literary history. This article aims to demonstrate that there are several works in Brazilian literature which could be classified as “fear literature”—a fictional narrative that produces “artistic fear”. In fact, some of the most important Brazilian authors, including Machado de Assis, Bernardo Guimarães, Aluísio Azevedo, Inglês de Souza, João do Rio, Humberto de Campos and Coelho Neto, penned works in the macabre during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, critics were either unable to identify them as works of horror or paid no attention to an area of fiction in which social problems were not realistically represented. As relações língua-cultura-sociedade estão refletidas na língua e, a partir de seu estudo, principalmente no nível lexical, observamos aspectos valorizados e até as condições de vida impostas a ele pelo meio físico. Os topônimos são as unidades lexicais nomeadoras de lugares, estudados pela Toponímia. O objetivo deste trabalho é a análise de “Iracema”, escrita por José de Alencar, dividida em: breve contexto histórico na Europa e no Brasil, dados sobre o autor e a obra, e, análise, resumo da obra, além de se aplicar o embasamento teórico-metodológico relativo à Toponímia. Pagoda, Temple of Love 1977 - Practice Ground for the Matriarchy First, I want to thank Dr. Goettner Abendroth and Dr.Keller for inviting me to this miracle of a conference. The theme of this conference is TIME IS RIPE – better to build a lifeboat than wait for the patriarch Titanic to listen to reason. In 1977, a group of women in St. Augustine, Florida built a lifeboat. We built an intentional community that is matriarchal at it's base and intention and, matrifocal in it's function. It is a community of Lesbian Feminists who decided to make the personal truly political by immersing themselves in Lesbian culture. Choosing to live in a women only community, with Women's Spirituality at it's base, was (is) nothing short of revolutionary. Exploring the notion of how life could be lived among women, with core feminist ethics and intention, was a cause that was taken up by thousands of women in the 1970s. Most of these communities quickly dissolved, some lasted through the 1980s, and a few, like the Pagoda Community, lasted into this century. Intentional women's communities were and continue to be practice grounds for the matriarchy, glimpses of how life could be lived among women here and now. Pagoda women trudged through murky, treacherous waters to build bridges between women at a time when we were just beginning to find each other. For the Pagoda Community, it meant years of joy in living among women in an idyllic seaside setting, together with the chaos that comes before real 1 change. -

To be sure, Julien Sorel’s attempted murder of Mme de Rênal— at the elevation of the host, at the sacrifice of the mass—was an act of passion,theactofamanmaddenedbyambitionthatwasthwartedat the moment of its climax by the woman he had loved. The story of ‘‘un ambitieux’’ presents itself in Lerougeetlenoiras a nightmare of democ- racy, of aspirations grasped and lost. In the words of Michel Crouzet, Julien stands at the scene of his crime and at his trial as both ‘‘witness and victim of the egalitarian passion and the resentment that is its con- stituent part.’’1 It is the negativity, not the savagery, of Julien’s crime that arrests readers of Lerougeetlenoirand introduces Stendhal into the pantheon of French intellectuals who have chosen liberty, even if in death, over bourgeois mediocrity and materialism: ‘‘In shooting Mme de Rênal, he turns his back on power, ‘he saves himself, forever, to the point of death, one might say, from ambition.’’’2 But how discordant with nineteenth-century values was Julien’s iconic rejection of competitive individualism?
