A. W. Schlegel and the Nineteenth-Century Damnatio of Euripides Ernst Behler

Schlegel and the Nineteenth-Century Damnatio of Euripides Ernst Behler N HIS 1802-04 Berlin lectures on aesthetics, August Wilhelm Schle I gel claimed that his younger brother Friedrich (in his essay On the Study of Greek Poetry U795]), had been the first in the modern age to discern the "immeasurable gulf" separating Euripides from Aeschylus and Sophocles, thereby reviving an attitude the Greeks themselves had assumed towards the poet. The elder Schlegel noted that certain contemporaries of Euripides felt the "deep decline" both in his tragic art and in the music of the time: Aristophanes, with his unrelenting satire, had been assigned by God as Euripides' "eternal scourge"; 1 Plato, in reproaching the poets for fostering the passionate state of mind through excessive emotionalism, actually pointed to Euripides (SK I 40). Schlegel believed that his younger brother's observation of the profound difference between Euripides and the two other Greek tragedians was an important intuition that required detailed critical and comparative analysis for sufficient development (SK II 359). By appropriating this task as his own, August Wilhelm Schlegel inaugurated a phenomenon that we may describe as the nineteenth-century damnatio of Euripides. The condemnation of Euripides by these early German romantics was no extravagant and isolated moment in their critical activity: it constituted a central event in the progressive formation of a new literary theory. Their pronouncements must be seen in the context of a larger movement, towards the end of the eighteenth century, that transformed the critical scene in Europe: the fall of the classicist doctrine and the rise of the new literary theory of romanticism. -

ENVIRONMENTAL SURROUNDINGS DEFINING NATIONAL IDENTITIES by MEGAN TRENHOLM (Under the Direction of Susan Quinlan) ABSTRACT Throughout this thesis, three books will be discussed: A Bagaceira by José Américo de Almeida, Iracema by José de Alencar, and A Senhora by José de Alencar as well. These works will be interlinked based on their principle female characters and how their feminine characteristics are always in comparison with their environmental surroundings. Because they all deal with the flora and fauna of a specific historic place based on where the specific story takes place, all of them also correspond with the search for a national identity. In addition to the search for a national identity, each female character exemplifies the Persephone – Demeter myth and cyclical events that pertain to fertility. All of these works attempt to center on ecofeminism and the search for a “matrifocal” society rather than a patriarchal society. Art, Artists and Nature: The Hudson River School The landscape paintings created by the 19 th century artist known as the Hudson River School celebrate the majestic beauty of the American wilderness. Students will learn about the elements of art, early 19 th century American culture, the creative process, environmental concerns and the connections to the birth of American literature. New York State Standards: Elementary, Intermediate, and Commencement The Visual Arts – Standards 1, 2, 3, 4 Social Studies – Standards 1, 3 ELA – Standards 1, 3, 4 BRIEF HISTORY By the mid-nineteenth century, the United States was no longer the vast, wild frontier it had been just one hundred years earlier. Cities and industries determined where the wilderness would remain, and a clear shift in feeling toward the American wilderness was increasingly ruled by a new found reverence and longing for the undisturbed land. At the same time, European influences - including the European Romantic Movement - continued to shape much of American thought, along with other influences that were distinctly and uniquely American. The traditions of American Indians and their relationship with nature became a recognizable part of this distinctly American Romanticism. American writers put words to this new romantic view of nature in their works, further influencing the evolution of American thought about the natural world. It found means of expression not only in literature, but in the visual arts as well. A focus on the beauty of the wilderness became the passion for many artists, the most notable came to be known as the Hudson River School Artists. The Hudson River School was a group of painters, who between 1820s and the late nineteenth century, established the first true tradition of landscape painting in the United States. -

This conflict permeates the writings of poet and art critic Charles Baudelaire. While Baudelaire scholarship has maintained the idea of the poet as a strict anti-naturalist and proponent of the artificial, this paper offers a revision of Baudelaire‟s relation to nature through a close reading across his critical and poetic texts. The Salon reviews of 1845, 1846 and 1859, as well as Baudelaire‟s Journaux Intimes, Les Paradis Artificiels and two poems that deal directly with the subject of landscape, are examined. CHAPTER 6 The Concept of Bildung in Early German Romanticism 1. Social and Political Context In 1799 Friedrich Schlegel, the ringleader of the early romantic circle, stated, with uncommon and uncharacteristic clarity, his view of the summum bonum, the supreme value in life: “The highest good, and [the source of] ev- erything that is useful, is culture (Bildung).”1 Since the German word Bildung is virtually synonymous with education, Schlegel might as well have said that the highest good is education. That aphorism, and others like it, leave no doubt about the importance of education for the early German romantics. It is no exaggeration to say that Bildung, the education of humanity, was the central goal, the highest aspiration, of the early romantics. All the leading figures of that charmed circle—Friedrich and August Wilhelm Schlegel, W. D. Wackenroder, Friedrich von Hardenberg (Novalis), F. W. J. Schelling, Ludwig Tieck, and F. D. Schleiermacher—saw in education their hope for the redemption of humanity. The aim of their common journal, the Athenäum, was to unite all their efforts for the sake of one single overriding goal: Bildung.2 The importance, and indeed urgency, of Bildung in the early romantic agenda is comprehensible only in its social and political context. The young romantics were writing in the 1790s, the decade of the cataclysmic changes wrought by the Revolution in France. Like so many of their generation, the romantics were initially very enthusiastic about the Revolution. Tieck, Novalis, Schleiermacher, Schelling, Hölderlin, and Friedrich Schlegel cele- brated the storming of the Bastille as the dawn of a new age. -

Duncan Macmillan: Introduction 5 INTRODUCT I ON Duncan Macmillan James MacPherson’s Fragments of Ancient Poetry was published in 1760. Within the year, we learn from Howard Gaskill, it was translated into French by Diderot himself.1 In the two and a half centuries that have passed since then, the work has been translated into practically every literary language under the sun and it is likely that, somewhere, it has always been in print. That would be a remarkable bibliographic history for any book, but for a work whose exact nature was a matter of controversy from the day it was published and which has been routinely debunked as a fraud, it is truly extraordinary; nor does Ossian’s topicality seem to be fading even now in this post-modern era. On the contrary, the occasion for the conference whose transactions are recorded in this volume was the exhibition at the UNESCO building in Paris of Calum Colvin’s remarkable series of images, Ossian, Fragments of Ancient Poetry. It is a title which invokes MacPherson directly and the work itself is a striking witness to his enduring topicality. Among the essays below, the artist has contributed an illuminating commentary on his own work, backed by Tom Normand’s contribution which further examines it in the context of the photographic image and its role in the preservation, generation and perhaps even the creation of memory. Ossian, too, is in part at least a created memory. That analogy with an art form not invented till forty years after MacPherson’s death is typical of the way in which, for all that it is deliberately archaic, Ossian appears paradoxically also to be precociously modern. -

A Preface to a Theory of Art-Fear in Brazilian Literature
http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-8026.2012n62p341 A PREFACE TO A THEORY OF ART-FEAR IN BRAZILIAN LITERATURE Julio França Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro Luciano Cabral da Silva Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro Abstract There is no tradition in the study of horror in Brazilian literature; with Álvares de Azevedo”s tales of Noite na Taverna generally considered as the only example of Gothic, terror or horror narrative quoted in literary history. This article aims to demonstrate that there are several works in Brazilian literature which could be classified as “fear literature”—a fictional narrative that produces “artistic fear”. In fact, some of the most important Brazilian authors, including Machado de Assis, Bernardo Guimarães, Aluísio Azevedo, Inglês de Souza, João do Rio, Humberto de Campos and Coelho Neto, penned works in the macabre during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, critics were either unable to identify them as works of horror or paid no attention to an area of fiction in which social problems were not realistically represented. Novalis and Hymns to the Night : ZHAO 37 Novalis and Hymns to the Night JINGJING ZHAO “The division of Philosopher and Poet is only apparent, and to the disadvantage of both. It is a sign of disease, and of a sickly constitution.”1 —Novalis In this paper, I start by giving a broad introduction of the early Romantics’ break from Hegel’s systematic philosophy and their efforts to establish the authority of Art in philosophy’s claim to Truth. Then I go on to explore a key concept that lends support to the Romantics’ accreditation of the authenticity of Art—the immediacy of “feeling” as postulated in Kant’s Third Critique. The exploration of this concept will then give further clarification to similar ideas expressed in Schlegel, and especially Novalis’ works. After this I will introduce a central agency that the Romantics use to evoke the sense of the “feeling” of the infinite—“productive imagination”—as well as Novalis’ elaboration on the topic of poetic Imagination (or “romanticization,” as he calls it) in his own writing. At last, I will introduce Novalis’ Hymns to the Night, and describe how this piece of literary work, from its content to its structure, corresponds to the early Romantics’ agenda of unifying poetry and JINGJING ZHAO is a PhD student in English from Auckland University. Her PhD thesis examines the intellectual and ideological aspects of Emily Bronte’s writings in the 19th century European historical context, through comparing her treatment of several issues with that of other Romantic and Victorian authors—Holderlin, Novalis, Tennyson and Arnold.
