Bishop’s Letter

What a fantastic summer we’ve had! The wonderful warm weather and those big, blue skies seemed to go on for ever.

However, there’s no doubt now that things have changed and the season is turning. As I write, the bright blue sky has given way to grey as the rain pitter- patters on my window. Warm woollies and raincoats have been dusted down, and all around us the glorious green of summer is giving way to the browns, reds and yellows of autumn.

While I enjoy the summer, I also enjoy this time of year. Those changing colours which are all around us, the fruit on the trees and those fallen leaves crunching underfoot, are a reminder that human life is marked by change as much as it is by constancy. And as the light summer days give way to the darkness of winter that is coming, we are reminded, too, of our own mortality and the transient nature of this earthly life.

Our church calendar is a big help here, since at the beginning of this month we keep the festivals of All Saints and All Souls.

All Saints is a day when, as a church, we remember that great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us; the saints whose lives are an example and an inspiration to us as we try to live out our vocation as disciples of Jesus Christ in our time, just as they did in theirs.

All Souls - or as it is also known, the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed – is a time for us to remember our loved ones before God, giving thanks for all that they have given to us, and commending them to his unfailing love.

If there are services for these festivals taking place in a church near you, I encourage you to go along and take a full part in them. Both of them are an opportunity to examine our own Christian lives in the light of those who have gone before us, who have loved us and inspired us, and to dedicate ourselves once again to follow Jesus in the service of others and of God.

Bishop Christopher The tree is a symbol of the growth of the Bishop’s vision: faithful, confident, joyful.

COFFEE MORNINGS

Thank you! Approximately £1093 was raised at the coffee mornings from May 5th to October 5th. The money raised in the last 5 weeks was for the flower fund which came to about £190. The coffee mornings have been very successful and everyone seemed to enjoy having a chat. A large number of people were involved in making cakes and buying coffees. Thank you very much. We look forward to seeing you again next year using our new kitchen and you can have more than one cup of coffee as the facilities will be available!! Don't forget. If you miss having a Saturday morning chat why not come to All Wrapped Up from 10.30 onwards. Look forward to seeing you there.

St James Spilsby

Ride and Stride Once again I was able to “stride” round to 11 churches and chapels on a reasonably fine day as the rain stopped early – approximately 12 miles, so not bad for the old boy! But most important, with your help I raised £444, half going to the Trust and half to St James, Spilsby. So thank you to all who sponsored me so generously. Dave S

Spilsby Rainbows A group of Rainbows and leaders met in St James as part of their Harvest celebration. The Rainbows had created a harvest collage to display in church along with their food contributions which were then donated to the Spilsby Community Larder. The Rev Joan Thornett came along to give the Rainbows a guided tour of the church and to answer their questions (and there were lots of them). Joan led the rainbows in a prayer and the Rainbows gave Joan a rendition of their song and promise. A very busy and lively hour spent in St James that was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Joan for giving up her time.

Spilsby Primary School Harvest Festival 2013

We were delighted to have the opportunity again this year of taking all 190 of our pupils to St James’ Church to celebrate our Harvest Festival. The children were joined by parents and friends of the school as they performed a range of songs, poems and readings linked to Harvest. Children from all of the school classes took their turn to perform with enthusiasm and it was clear that a great deal of hard work had gone into their preparation. Who will ever forget the leek-shaped guitar solo, the fashionable way to plant cabbages or Reception class’ first live performance? Canon Peter Coates offered the congregation a moment of reflection considering how those of us that are

7 fortunate enough to have plenty can support and care for others. In line with his thoughts, the children’s donations this year were passed on to the Spilsby Community larder and a Macmillan Coffee morning was held following the service. Our thanks go to all of our children and families for their continued support of the school as well as to our friends at the Church for helping to make this a very special occasion.

Coffee Morning for Macmillan and St James’ Church A huge ‘thank you’ to all who supported the coffee morning held on 18 October. It was a fantastic morning and we managed to raise £254.20 with the promise of further donations to come. What a team! With thanks, Claire

Diocesan Synod Digest

28 September 2013 at Chapter House, Lincoln Cathedral

The Bishop of Lincoln's Presidential Address introduced the motion "That this Synod supports the vision and direction of the as Faithful, Confident, Joyful".

The Bishop's address can be viewed here: dioce.se/synodfcj

The Bishop's mission statement for the diocese is: "To respond to the love of God as faithful worshipping communities and as confident disciples of Jesus Christ, joyfully serving and witnessing to him in the world through the power of the Holy Spirit".

In our Deanery of Bolingbroke I believe we have always tried to be faithful, we have shown great confidence in the sacrificial way in which we have promoted our Christian lives within our parishes and lives. There can be no doubt that we enjoy our faith and express that in all we do. Thank you to every one of you and I am sure that we will grow that in the future too.

Spilsby Organ Group

On Monday, 14th October we celebrated the end of this season’s tuition with a full organ and choral service together with appropriate prayers conducted by Fr. Martin Faulkner.

Attending members each played a hymn of their choice and a formal organ piece to follow. Lessons were read and Eric Wayman, our tutor, played a Humoureske piece as our finale.

Refreshments were kindly provided by Sue West to round off a most enjoyable afternoon.

It is hoped that the group will re-form in May 2014 when the repairs at St. James' will be completed as the organ will be cocooned until all the work ends.

Our thanks go to the PCC's of St James Spilsby, Halton Holegate and East Keal who kindly allowed us to examine and play the organs in their churches throughout the year as part of our extended programme. We are always looking for new members....interested? Contact Alf Tunnicliffe 01790 755552

ERESBY NEWS

A Harvest Festival led by Jane and Margaret was held on 30th September. The residents enjoyed singing Harvest hymns and joining in with the psalm and prayers. They also enjoyed reminiscing about past Harvests. Dolly remembered helping with the sugar beet, knocking off the earth and putting the beet in rows. She also remembered the horses helping to pull the carts. One horse was called Punch. Margaret remembered taking the tea down to the workers at lunch time and Moira remembered potato picking and earning 10 shillings a day. Lucy helped to skin the rabbits and pheasants for dinner but no-one seemed very keen to eat rabbit stew now. They also remembered full Churches to celebrate the end of the Harvest. Andi remembered the excitement of having processed meals and giving more time for the housewife to go out to work instead of slaving over a hot stove. Jane and Margaret remembered their first fish finger!! Happy Days.

On 10th September Helena, Manager, and members of staff and volunteers attended an Awards ceremony for all the St John care homes in Lincolnshire at the Petwood Hotel. Helena received the award for top leader of the year for “demonstrating great leadership skills in a time of significant change at Eresby” There were 52 people in this category. Matthew Stainton was carer of the year for over 25's as he is “committed to his role of carer”. He also received the Nigel Stourton award for top employee of the year which is a great honour. Unfortunately he was on holiday but Sue, his mother, who works in the kitchen, was there to receive his award. This will be displayed in Eresby for one year. Polly Tempest and Margaret Cook were nominated and shortlisted to the last three for Volunteer of the year. So if you are looking for a good care home for a loved one you know where to come! November, remembering but also planning and preparing.

In Memoriam is a long, long, long elegy by our very own, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, completed in 1849. It is a requiem for the poet's beloved fellow Cambridge undergraduate, Arthur Henry Hallam. Written over a period of 17 years, it is a meditation on the search for hope after great loss. The original title was "The Way of the Soul", it is full of Tennyson's thoughts and feelings as he copes with grief and loss and is said to address the high Victorian interests in death, remorse and spiritual growth.

Tennyson is quoted as saying of that period; "I suffered what seemed to me to shatter all my life so that I desired to die rather than to live." I love this work, the emotion, the insights, the wisdom, the love, the life. The length of this work is mind blowing, a lifetime’s study. The following few stanzas enshrine for me this time of year, I know many associate it with the new year, but it truly speaks to me of November and December; all Souls, remembrance, autumn days, the real world, our wonderful Wolds and churches, our group, our commitment, faith, friends, grief, heartache, world anguish, God’s promise, Christ, Christmas. I do hope you think so too.

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light: The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die. Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out the grief that saps the mind, For those that here we see no more; Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind. Ring out a slowly dying cause, And ancient forms of party strife; Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners, purer laws. Ring out the want, the care, the sin, The faithless coldness of the times; Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes, But ring the fuller minstrel in. Ring out false pride in place and blood, The civic slander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right, Ring in the common love of good. Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace. Ring in the valiant man and free, The larger heart, the kindlier hand; Ring out the darkness of the land, Ring in the Christ that is to be.

We have so much to do in November and December, so much to share, to be involved in. This tiny group of parishes is trying to live by faith in God and so be prepared to truly celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour, the living reality and daily joy. Cheryl

6 October - The Harvest Service at St Leonards, South Ormsby

As each person entered the church, they were given not only the service books but also a pressed autumnal leaf. Cheryl started the service by telling us all that she had collected the leaves last year and had pressed them, so that she could to give one to each person there, as a reminder of Autumn and Harvest. The first Hymn of the service was “Come Ye Thankful People Come”, which was sung with great gusto by the many who came to give thanks to God. The altar looked resplendent, as it was decorated with a huge garland of wheat that had been lovingly prepared by Cheryl and a child’s vintage metal tractor graced the Chancel.

It was a great privilege to be part of such a wonderful service, and to be at the front with Paul and Cheryl, giving thanks to God for his wonderful provision of food and blessings in our life. We gave thanks for the farmers who help produce our food. We also remembered those in our world today who are not so fortunate and rely on the generosity of others, with the help of food banks in order to feed their families.

It was lovely to have so many people take part in the service, with readings and prayers, all with the theme of Harvest and God’s blessings in our life. It was good to hear us say the words of the South Ormsby Group Prayer, asking God to bind us together in love.

Cheryl asked people to think of how many words they could think of from the word ‘Harvest’. Her message was that while we may have plenty, we are called to share with those that do not have any food or warm clothing or love in their lives. We have an abundance of food and of resources and love, and that we are called to share these wonderful gifts, to share the love of God.

We had many great Harvest hymns, but no harvest service would be complete without the Hymn “We plough the fields and scatter...” which we all sang with great enthusiasm.

After all had received communion, there was one last reading. David Haxby, read a poem about rural life, which he read beautifully. Cheryl spoke the words of God’s Harvest blessing on us all which brought our Harvest service to an end. The celebration continued with Tea and Coffee and conversation and laughter. Our God is indeed a generous God. Teresa

A Real Harvest Supper

The best things sometimes happen by chance or coincidence. I received this following note:

‘I went to look at the flowers at Ruckland church when it was the weekend. That was lovely, so was the tea and cake at the chapel. I got talking to your vicar and she told me a few things that were going on and said I should come to the harvest supper, she gave me the details. I did buy a ticket and I did go. Not one who normally writes things I do have to tell you I had such a good evening, the people were friendly, the food was just like it should be and even more, the whole evening felt friendly and full of laughter. You are very lucky people and thank you vicar for inviting me. I am only sorry I could not join in any services, perhaps next year.’

I do know who this was but as they did not want to put their name to it, neither shall I. We did have a wonderful Harvest supper, we did have wonderful Harvest Services, we are a lucky bunch of people, long may it continue and it will. You raised £400 for group funds at the supper, well done.

Harvest symbols are now packed away until next year and our thoughts truly turn to Remembrance and to Christmas. Please do ensure that those we love and know and those, as the person writing about the supper, who meet us fleetingly are left in no doubt that God lives in our hearts and lights up our lives. The December chronicle will have information about Advent study and prayers, we begin our Advent journey on December 1st at our Love in a Box service.

A passage from scripture for us to begin our Advent journey. You could perhaps light a candle? The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has dawned…. you have increased their joy and given them great gladness they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, … For to us a child has been born, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, the everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end. Upon the throne of David and over his kingdom to establish and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. Isaiah 9

All Souls Tide Memorial Service Sunday November 3rd

St Mary’s Church, Tetford, 10-30am

I am sure you are aware of our Memorial service held each year. This is a quiet, reflective act of worship, where the names of our loved ones are read out and a candle lit in their memory. The process of grief and grieving, if we are honest, never ends although a certain kind of acceptance does come with time. This service gives an opportunity to thankfully remember our loved ones and all they still mean to us. Names in our registers from 2009 onwards are remembered. Should you wish anyone else to be included please do let Teresa or myself know. 01507-480236 [email protected] Teresa 01790-753158

We Will Remember Them In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. — John McCrae

A Reflection from Mrs Eileen Burrell

“Two Horses” Not far from is a field with two horses in it. From a distance each horse looks like any other horse, but if you look closely, one of the horses is blind.

His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made him a safe and cosy barn to live in. This alone is wonderful but if you stand nearby and listen you will hear the sound of a bell. It is coming from the other smaller horse.

Attached to the horse’s halter is a bell, it lets the blind horse know where the other horse is and so he can follow his friend. As you stand and watch these two friends you will see that the horse with the bell constantly checks on the blind horse so that he can follow slowly to where the other horse is. Trusting he will not be led astray.

When the horse with the bell returns to their cosy shelter each evening he will stop and look back to make sure his blind friend is following. Like the owner of these horses, God does not throw us aside because we are not perfect or because we have problems. He watches over us, even brings others into our lives to help us.

Lord we pray for the days you give us. We pray for our wonderful churches. We pray for all our friends and families, especially those who are feeling unwell at this time. We pray for all our young people, back at school or there for the first time. We pray for those who have moved away from home to college, to university, to work. Lord we pray for the world and all those in trouble, we pray for our world leaders, give them the wisdom to lead us in the right way and to make the right decisions. Amen.

Not how did he die. But how did he live? Not, what did he gain, but what did he give? These are the units to measure the worth of a man as a man regardless of birth. Not what was his church nor what his creed. But had he befriended those really in need? Was he ever ready, with word of good cheer, to bring back a smile, to banish a tear? Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say, but how many were sorry when he passed away. Anon.
