Searching the Website for Parish Registers How to find a baptism, marriage or burial register on the Lincs to the Past website. In the examples below we shall be using the parish of Scotton. To find Parish Registers it is best to use the Advanced Search facility. Click on the Advanced Search tab on the main header bar. You will then see the Advanced Search facility. In the “With the exact phrase” box, enter the name of the parish, “par” and “1” (Scotton par 1, in our example - it is not case sensitive). A full list of parish names is appended to this Guide. Ensure that ‘Records’ results format has been selected (i.e. do not click on ‘Images’) and click on Search. Alternatively, if you know the specific parish register you need, you can enter that in the “With exact phrase”. For example, for SCOTTON PAR/1/2 enter Scotton Par 1 2 (do not use hyphens or slashes, instead insert spaces between the numbers) Be aware that some place names such as Bourne appear in a number of other parish names. In these instances, you will also get results for other places with Bourne in their name such as Thurlby by Bourne or Morton by Bourne. To get around this problem you can type the words you wish to exclude in the “Without the Words” box (e.g. Thurlby Morton). Selecting registers and displaying images from search results The hitlist will give details of all the parish registers found, including type of register, covering dates, and reference. Scroll down the search results to find the record in which you are interested. If a thumbnail image is shown, this means that images of the register itself can be viewed. To display the pages of the register, click on the thumbnail image or the title of the register (e.g. General register). To see particular pages of the register use the Images in record bar above the image: This shows you how many images there are. You can move forward or backwards one image, go to the first or last image, or by typing a number in the Jump to image box and clicking the Go button, you can move straight to that image (please note that this is an image number rather than the page number in the original register). The Navigator and Toolbar displays The Navigator display uses a thumbnail image to indicate which part of the whole image you are viewing. The blue rectangle indicates the area that is currently being displayed. You can drag the blue rectangle to another part of the thumbnail image to move quickly to another part of the image. The Toolbar display allows you to enlarge or reduce the main image and pan across the image horizontally or vertically. If they are obscuring part of the image you wish to see, the Navigator and Toolbar boxes can be moved by clicking on the top of the box and dragging the box to another place. Enlarging the images The images are displayed within a viewing box created by “Zoomify” software. For optimum viewing use your web browser’s zoom facility (on Internet Explorer this is at the bottom of the screen to the right of the word “Internet”) to expand the size of the web page. Up to a 400% increase is good for early registers (pre 1813). Up to a 200% increase is good for later registers (post 1813). Pressing Ctrl and + or Ctrl and - will also increase and decrease the size of the web page. The viewing area will now be quite large. Within the viewing area, the images can be enlarged in 3 ways: Clicking on an image itself. Using the slide bar on the “Zoomify” Toolbar (drag the triangle right to enlarge or left to reduce). Using the + button on the “Zoomify” Toolbar (or the - button to reduce). Some Registers are not currently available on the Website If a baptism register contains entries post 1911 it will not appear temporarily. Baptisms less than 100 years old will not be displayed. Marriages can only be displayed up to the end of June 1837. Hitlists Any of these searches will produce a Hitlist of items. You can select how many items to display per page – 10, 20 or 50 – if that helps you to scan the list. If one or more images are associated with a catalogue entry, a thumbnail picture will be displayed. If you click on the Images tab, only those catalogue entries that have associated images will be displayed. Click on a title to move to the full catalogue entry. General Hints and Tips Name searches: some parish register images have already been tagged to include surnames and dates. When additional tags are created by users they are added to the Lincs to the Past index and become searchable. It is worth typing a surname, or a parish name and a date in the main Search box. This function will grow over time as more entries are tagged. Sometimes a parish name is the same as a tagged surname so you may find what appear to be odd entries in your hitlist (e.g. searching for John Blyton will display the parish registers of Blyton and vice versa.) If you do not find what you are looking for, it may be because the relevant register does not exist, or there are no entries for the particular year you are after, or we have not yet created images. Try varying your search, just in case. Other Sources If you are searching for ancestors using parish registers have you also tried searching the documents listed below?
