This was not supported financially and thus was never built. The idea was revived in 1873 with a slightly different route but this was rejected by parliament. The plan changed again and eventually a tramway from Alford to Sutton on Sea was built. It opened in 1884 with limited success. The route was difficult and consequently the trains were slow and unreliable. The death knoll tolled for the tramway in 1886 when the Great Northern Railway was built. Sutton on Sea to Post The tramway finally closed in November 1889. Lincolnshire 117 MLI43675 548453 378742 Tramway Alford Tramway Medieval {1}{2} The increasing capital cost of railway branch HER lines and the reluctance of the major companies to promote them led to the development of rural steam tramways as a cheaper alternative. In response to the opening of the LECR a steam tramway was built along the public roads from Sutton on Sea to Alford and opened in 1884 {3} It was a 2 foot 6 inch gauge tramway with a single pair of rails. The tram route required a level surface and evidence was seen during the watching brief on the Bisby village water main relay, of large scale raising of the ground contours.

The circular barrow mound, which was constructed against the summit of the hill, is approximately 30 m in diameter and 1.5 m high, with a rounded profile and a flattened top. It is thought that this flattening is due to arable erosion and weathering and that the mound may have originally stood Ring Holt SM3 1017466 Prehistoric 540319 370508 higher, when it would have been a notable feature against the skyline. Traces of bowl barrow an infilled and buried ditch are evident around the northern arc of the barrow mound. Material used in the construction of the mound would have been quarried from this ditch. There is no evidence to indicate that the barrow has ever been excavated and it is thought to be largely intact. The bench seat to the north of the barrow is excluded from the scheduling, although the ground beneath it is included.

Viking Link: UK Onshore Scheme 112 Environmental Statement (ES-2-B.08) Archaeology & Cultural Heritage (Proposed Underground DC Cable) Long barrows were constructed as earthen or drystone mounds, generally with flanking ditches. They acted as funerary monuments during the Early and Middle Neolithic periods (3400-2400 BC), representing the burial places of Britain's early farming communities, and as such are amongst the oldest field monuments surviving in the present landscape. Where investigated, long barrows appear to have been used for communal burial, often with only parts of the human remains having been selected for interment. Certain sites provide evidence for several phases of funerary activities preceding the construction of the barrow mound, including ditched enclosures containing structures related to various rituals of burial. It is probable, therefore, that long barrows acted as important spiritual sites for their local communities over considerable periods of time. The long barrows of the and their adjacent regions have been identified as a distinct regional grouping of monuments in which the flanking ditches are continued around the ends of the barrow mound, either continuously or broken by a single causeway towards one end. More than 60 examples of this type of monument are known; a small number of these survive as earthworks, but the great majority of sites are known as cropmarks and soilmarks recorded on aerial photographs where no mound is evident at the surface. Not all Lincolnshire long barrows include mounds. Current limited understanding of the processes of Neolithic mortuary ritual in Lincolnshire is that Neolithic the large barrow mound represents the final phase of construction which was long barrow not reached by all mortuary monuments. Many of the sites where only the 540221. 371723.02 SM5 1015770 465m North Prehistoric ditched enclosure is known have been interpreted as representing monuments 7165 97 West of which had fully evolved mounds, but in which the mound itself has been Dexthorpe degraded or removed by subsequent agricultural activity. In a minority of cases, however, the ditched enclosure will represent a monument which never developed a burial mound. As a distinctive regional grouping of one of the few types of Neolithic monuments known, these sites are of great value. They were all in use over a great period of time and are thus highly representive of changing cultures of the peoples who built and maintained them. All forms of long barrow on the Lincolnshire Wolds and its adjacent regions are therefore considered to be of national importance and all examples with significant surviving remains are considered worthy of protection. Despite modification by ploughing, the long barrow 465m north west of Dexthorpe survives beneath the present ground surface and will retain rare and valuable archaeological deposits, including funerary remains, relating to the construction, dating and Viking Link: UK Onshore Scheme period of use of the site together with insights into the ritual beliefs of the barrow113 Environmental Statement (ES-2-B.08) builders. UK Onshore Scheme August 2017 Environmental Statement (ES-4-B.08) VKL-08-39-G500-009 1 Introduction

1.1 Introduction 1.1.1 This report has been prepared by Arcadis Consulting (UK) Limited. It reports the results of an archaeological and cultural heritage walkover survey which was carried out to assess the visibility of the known archaeological resource, to identify unrecorded heritage assets, and the potential for previously unrecorded heritage assets to be impacted by the proposed DC cable route. These results will also feed into the baseline studies for the Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Desk Based Assessments Appendix 12.1 and Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (Underground Cable) Environmental Statement (Chapter 12).

1.2 Report Structure 1.2.1 The remainder of this report is structured as follows: · Section 2. Methodology. Sets out the methodology which was applied to the archaeological walkover survey. · Section 3. Survey results. Reports the results of the walkover survey. · Section 4. Summary of Assessment. Provides a summary of the key findings of the archaeological walkover survey.

Viking Link: UK Onshore Scheme 1 Environmental Statement (ES-2-B.08) Archaeology & Cultural Heritage (Proposed Underground DC Cable) 2 Methodology

2.1 Aims and Objectives 2.1.1 An archaeological and cultural heritage walkover survey was undertaken between 30th January 2017 and 24th March 2017. The aims and objectives of the archaeological walkover survey were to: · Assess and describe the current ground conditions within the survey area; · Identify evidence and/or potential for the survival of buried archaeological remains within the archaeological walkover survey area; · Confirm the presence, location, and condition of known heritage assets; · Identify any unknown above ground heritage assets; · Identify any areas where previous modern activities may already have impacted upon known and/or potential heritage assets; and · Consider the potential impact of the proposed development upon built and archaeological heritage assets within the survey area.

2.2 Survey Area and Access 2.2.1 An archaeological and cultural heritage walkover survey was undertaken within the purple route corridor (Figure 1) which was a proposed route that was consulted upon in an early stage of the Scheme. This survey area was chosen to accommodate alterations to the route whilst providing sufficient baseline information for the assessment. 2.2.2 Access was requested on a field by field basis. Access was requested for fields that were within the purple route corridor only, it was not requested for fields outside of the corridor or for those that had only a very small proportion within it. Fields were only entered where access was successfully granted and the appropriate arrangements were in place. In instances where access arrangements fell through, for example a gate was not unlocked as arranged, and no-one could be contacted to unlock the gate, the fields were not accessed. 2.2.3 Access was not taken for areas that were domestic gardens or dense woodland. 2.2.4 Figure 2 illustrates the areas accessed compared to those that were not.

2.3 Methodology On Site methodology 2.3.1 The archaeological and cultural heritage walkover survey was undertaken on a field by field basis. It involved a visual assessment of the ground conditions of each field. The key features that the archaeological walkover survey sought to identify were ground disturbance, indicative of Viking Link: UK Onshore Scheme 2 Environmental Statement (ES-2-B.08) Archaeology & Cultural Heritage (Proposed Underground DC Cable) modern activity that is likely to have negatively affected potential underground archaeological remains, earthworks and differentiation in crop growth which could indicate of below ground archaeological remains. 2.3.2 Where previously unrecorded archaeology was identified, or known heritage assets were visible, a closer visual inspection was undertaken. 2.3.3 The archaeological and cultural heritage walkover survey was recorded using a mobile GIS recording technique pre-loaded with base mapping and known heritage assets, and stored on an iPad. The survey results were recorded on a field by field basis. 2.3.4 Base mapping and field boundary data was derived from Ordnance Survey MasterMap Topography. This was captured and designed for display at 1:1250, 1:2500, and 1:10000. 2.3.5 The mobile GIS platform was Collector for ArcGIS. Within this platform five shapefiles were created: · Field boundaries; · Photo points; · Modern disturbance (any recent human activity or development, considered to be of no archaeological value, which may have impacted on the presence or condition of known or unknown buried archaeological deposits); · Previously unrecorded archaeology; and · Gateways. 2.3.6 These shapefiles were created, mapped, and edited on site and recorded using the GPS system within the iPad. 2.3.7 Attributes for the field boundaries layer that were collected include: · Field Number; · Parcel Number; · Staff; · Accessed; · Reason not accessed; · Weather; · Topography; · Urban/Rural; · Land Use; · Known Heritage Assets; · Buildings/Structures; and · Field Boundaries. 2.3.8 The known heritage assets included non-designated Historic Environment Record data and designated assets from the National Heritage List for England. Due to the timing of the walkover survey and the area covered, the dataset for the known assets is different to that which was Viking Link: UK Onshore Scheme 3 Environmental Statement (ES-2-B.08) Archaeology & Cultural Heritage (Proposed Underground DC Cable) covered by the baseline for the Desk Based Assessment and Environmental Statement. This was due to the evolving design of, and changes to, the proposed DC cable route. 2.3.9 Georeferenced photographs were taken for each field and all features of interest. The photographs were attached to a point shapefile which was located within the GIS platform. Each point had attributes related to it, the attributes that were recorded are: · Photo Number; · Staff; · Orientation; and · Description. 2.3.10 Significant areas of modern disturbance which are likely to have previously impacted archaeological remains were also recorded. A shapefile was drawn in the field to identify the location of the identified disturbance, attributes were also collected for each area of disturbance, these included: · Staff; and · Description. 2.3.11 Polygons of previously unrecorded archaeology were drawn and recorded in similar fashion; within these shapefiles the attributes collected included: · Staff; and · Description. 2.3.12 Gateways were also marked and recorded at locations where they were identified to log access and entry points for future works.

Post-Processing 2.3.13 Following the completion of the archaeological and cultural heritage walkover survey, further desk-based assessment was undertaken on the previously unrecorded archaeological assets. This assessment included analysis of historic mapping and Google Earth imagery to gain a better understanding of the assets extent and form alongside aiding interpretation. 2.3.14 Project ID numbers were assigned to all previously unrecorded heritage assets, including for those which now fall outside of the proposed DC cable route Zone of Influence as they remain part of the record of the archaeological and cultural heritage walkover survey. 2.3.15 During the assessment process, assets that were located within the same geographical area, and interpreted to be related and contemporary, were grouped together and assigned the same Project ID number. This enabled coherent recording whilst on site and avoided duplication. 2.3.16 The previously unrecorded heritage assets are detailed in Table 1.

Viking Link: UK Onshore Scheme 4 Environmental Statement (ES-2-B.08) Archaeology & Cultural Heritage (Proposed Underground DC Cable) 3 Survey Results

3.1 Route Section 1 Boygrift to Well High Lane Topography, Land Use, Land Character

3.1.1 Route Section 1 is predominantly situated on the coastal perimeter of the proposed DC cable route, consequently it is largely characterised by slightly undulating topography (Plate 1). The topography of the region to the north-west of Alford becomes more upland in nature as it enters the Wolds and several areas are characterised as rolling hills (Plate 2). The land use within this route section was predominantly arable. However, there are areas of pasture which are frequently used for domestic scale equine grazing.

Modern Disturbance 3.1.2 Significant modern disturbance was recorded at several locations along Route Section 1 (Figure 3). Several instances were identified of additional field boundaries having been established within larger, pre-existing fields (F331, F363, F484). There were also examples of the removal of field boundaries and ditches (F372, F513). A new land drain had also been inserted at F474 which is located to the north-north-west of Rigsby. To the north-west of Ailby, small sections of a dismantled railway (412) embankment had been removed between F351, F483 and F482, the machinery left on site indicated that the removal of the embankment was set to continue (Plate 3).

Known Heritage Assets 3.1.3 There are ten heritage assets known from the Historic Environment Record (HER) were recorded as not visible during the archaeological and cultural heritage walkover survey (28, 117, 158, 174, 267, 166, 105, 103, 268, 269) (Figure 3). These assets were not visible and are thought to have been impacted by agricultural activity. Below ground elements of the assets may survive beneath plough depths. 3.1.4 The archaeological and cultural heritage walkover survey recorded five known heritage assets (Figure 3). To the north-east of Yarlsgate Farm, a farm likely to be of Viking origin, F532 contained the probable earthwork remains of a Late Medieval enclosure and field boundary (159), an earthwork of approximate oval shape was visible at this location during the walkover. To the west of Yarlsgate Farm, a disused railway (411) is visible as a linear pathway that is lined by hedges, it bordered F331, F337, F333, F448, F527, F526, F346, F345. To the south of Markby, the probable Medieval earthwork fishponds (167) were visible in F446. At Ailby, the Deserted Medieval Village of Ailby (219) was visible as earthworks in F486 (Plate 4). To the west of Ailby the dismantled railway (412) was visible as predominantly upstanding in F350, F351, F483 and F482.

Previously Unrecorded Heritage Assets (see Table 1)

3.1.5 Located to the south-east of the village of Hannah were areas of previously unrecorded evidence of Medieval agricultural practice in the form of ridge and furrow (Figure 3). F372 contained two sets of ridge and furrow, the northern-most group was oriented east-west whilst the southern group was north-south (260). To the west F374 contained ridge and furrow oriented north-south (260) (Plate 5). To the south-east of America Farm and east of Boy Grift Drain, F520 contained an old field boundary and ridge and furrow which was oriented east-west (261) (Plate 6). To the south of Crawford Lane, F363 contained ridge and furrow that was oriented north-south and a potential platform (262) (Plate 7). To the west of Asserby, in F425 was an area of north-south oriented ridge and furrow (259) (Plate 8) which likely relates to the Deserted Medieval Village of Asserby (267). To the south-west of Furzehill, an oval shaped mound (258) was visible in F508 (Plate 9) which may be a Bronze Age barrow, this was within 435 m of another possible Bronze Age barrow (300) identified through LiDAR interpretation. At Ailby, in F352 a cluster of former field boundaries, a strip field, and ridge and furrow (255) were identified (Plate 10), although these do not form part of the HER record for Ailby Deserted Medieval Village (219) they are likely to be related to it and help demonstrate the extent of the settlement.

Viking Link: UK Onshore Scheme 11 Environmental Statement (ES-2-B.08) Archaeology & Cultural Heritage (Proposed Underground DC Cable) 3.2 Route Section 2 Well High Lane to A16 (Keal Road) Topography, Land Use, Land Character 3.2.1 The topography of Route Section 2 is a rolling landscape typical of the Lincolnshire Wolds (Plate 11). Land use within this region was highly variable. The north-eastern most sector was generally arable with many ploughed fields. There were also scattered areas of woodland and grassland. The northern sector was characterised as pasture whilst to the west there was mixed use of arable, quarrying, plantation with scrub, and pasture. Land to the south-east of and to the north-east of Raithby-by-Spilsby was predominantly arable with isolated areas of pasture and scrub. To the south of Raithby-by-Spilsby, towards the A16, the area was predominantly characterised by pasture with discrete areas of arable and woodland. 3.2.2 There was very limited access to land surrounding Langton, Dalby, Sausthorpe, and Partney making it difficult to characterise this area. Access was granted to discrete areas to the north and west of Dalby.

Plate 11. General picture showing character of the landscape facing north

Viking Link: UK Onshore Scheme 12 Environmental Statement (ES-2-B.08) Archaeology & Cultural Heritage (Proposed Underground DC Cable) Modern Disturbance

3.2.3 The observed modern disturbance within Route Section 2 was variable. An unmapped modern structure was discovered in F505 to the north-east of Ulceby Cross (Figure 3). A further structure was identified at Dalby in F428, which was interpreted as terracing to accommodate temporary buildings. A temporary track had been placed in F451, to the south of Raithby Hill, this also formed a temporary field boundary. Further evidence for the modification of field boundaries was evident at Mardon Hill where a hedge had been partially removed to make an entrance into a field between F320 and F453. A trackway and fence had also been inserted at F453. There were also instances where ponds had been established within areas where they were not previously mapped. This was demonstrated at in F325 and to the north of Raithby-by-Spilsby in F462 where two recently established ponds were observed.

Known Heritage Assets 3.2.4 There are 35 heritage assets recorded within Route Section 2 that were not observed during the walkover survey (77, 91, 124, 125, 126, 127, 106, 139,132, 131,130, 129,133, 128, 68, 176, 79, 123, 35, 115, 108,109, 110, 111, 176, 107, 80, 76, 225, 224, 270, 271, 272, 273, 274) (Figure 3). These assets were no longer present and they are thought to have been impacted by agricultural activity and modern development, the findspots will have been removed at the point that they were discovered. Ridge and Furrow (149) was recorded and visible in F429 at Dalby (Plate 12). Elements of the historic landscape character which are also recorded in the HER were also noted, such as the Historic settlement of Sutterby (100) in F322 and F323 and East Keal Park (168) in F314.
