1 Bishop’s Letter

Dear Friends, Many of us will have experienced moments of awful isolation in our lives, or of panic, or of sheer joy. The range of situations, and of emotions, to which we can be exposed is huge. These things help to form the richness of human living. But in themselves they can sometimes be immensely difficult to handle. Jesus’ promise was to be with his friends. Although they experienced the crushing sadness of his death, and the huge sense of betrayal that most of them felt in terms of their own abandonment of him, they also experienced the joy of his resurrection and the happiness of new times spent with him. They would naturally have understood that his promise to ‘be with them’ meant that he would not physically leave them. However, what Jesus meant when he said that they would not be left on their own was that the Holy Spirit would always be with them. It is the Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, that we celebrate during the month of May. Jesus is taken from us, body and all, but the Holy Spirit is poured out for us and on to us. The Feast of the Holy Spirit is Pentecost. It happens at the end of Eastertide, and thus marks the very last transition that began weeks before when, on Ash Wednesday, we entered the wilderness in preparation for Holy Week and Eastertide to come. Coming ‘at the end of things’ Pentecost can sometimes seem to be almost an afterthought – a last gasp of celebration before the year turns fully green and ‘normal time’ resumes. I suggest that we should, however, try to see it as another moment of real transition, when, gifted with the Holy Spirit, God’s people realise that they have all that they need in order to live their lives fully and without fear in the world. The Holy Spirit is described in scripture as ‘advocate’ and ‘guide’. He is the Person of the Trinity who is always there. No matter what our particular emotions may be in any moment, God is with us. As we continue to grapple with population movement, with continuing unrest in so many parts of the world, and with the serious issue of the Referendum in our own country, to name but three things, I hope that we may draw strength, confidence and joy from the presence of the Spirit. Our gracious God does equip us with all that we need to live our lives as disciples in the world today. May God bless you this Pentecost and always, Bishop Nicholas 2

5 DEANERY CONFIRMATION SERVICE St James’ Church, Spilsby nd Sunday 22 May at 10.00am

At Present we have only one candidate. Therefore, I would like to invite

anyone who would like to explore their faith a bit deeper to think about

joining us for the preparation journey. Those who have already been

confirmed and those who have not (there will be no pressure to be

confirmed at the end of the sessions, it will be for the individual to

decide). I have often found that those who have already been confirmed

not only help those preparing but find it a great opportunity for new

growth in their own lives.

Wednesday Mornings. At the 10.30am Eucharist at St James Spilsby we will address different “Marks” of our Faith and explore each topic afterwards over a coffee.

Rev’d Fran’s Bit!

I am watching the weather forecast with increasing foreboding. Why? Because I am just one week away from my sponsored walk from Lincoln to Boston – 33 miles along the Water Rail Way. And the forecast is not great. Rain, rain and more rain is anticipated for Bank Holiday Monday. Am I surprised? Not really.

But am I tempted to call it off? Certainly. Two days in the pouring rain does not sound much like fun. And I am certainly not confident that I will manage to complete the course. So, why am I putting myself through this? Partly, because it felt like a good idea at the time! Partly because it is my way of raising money for our cluster Parish share which does not involve me in more meetings with more cake and biscuits to add to my ever expanding waistline.

But mainly, because it is something I really, really want to do. I love getting out for long walks with my camera, because out there in the countryside, I can converse with God in a different way. This is where I can allow him to speak without being confined to the words on a page. So, will I make it to the end? By the time you read this, you may well know the answer. But even if I don’t, I will have spent some happy, if rather wet, hours with a very, very loving Father. And that will always make it worth the effort.

THY KINGDOM COME 8th to 15th May CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 15th to 21st May

Two important weeks in May that we can show what it means to be Christians, prayer and action. One leads to the other and visa versa. Christian Aid widens our concept of neighbour but we need to be aware of our responsibility close to home. Please pray and think how you can support and use the Neighbourhood Volunteer Support. Sunday 26th June sees the ordination of Sam Parsons as a Deacon in , (morning) let me know if you would like a seat in the bus? Call the Team Office 01790 752526. Sunday 26th June sees the retirement of The Rev’d Cheryl Hilliam as Parish Priest in (Evening) Please book the dates.

7 Christian Aid Week: the week we love every neighbour Picture a young mother of four. Her husband has left. She has no land. No assets. No savings. And the only work she can get is backbreaking manual labour for as little as 74p a day. Her home has been flooded several times, and last August it flooded again. This is Morsheda. She’s our neighbour, and she desperately needs our help.

From 15-21 May, our church will join with more than 20,000 others across the country for the sake of people like Morsheda. Across the UK and Ireland we will deliver 7 million envelopes to our local neighbours to raise money for our global neighbours in need. It’s an opportunity to reach out to our community, and to make sure some of the world’s poorest people have enough to eat and a safe place to live.

A Home Safety Package from Christian Aid could raise Morsheda’s home on an earth plinth, safe from the flood plain, and give her resources to invest in things like farm animals, seeds and a composting kit – giving her the tools she needs to build a better future. A new chance at life for Morsheda costs as little as £250.

Can you deliver and collect Christian Aid envelopes to your neighbours to help our church raise money this Christian Aid Week? Contact any of the clergy if you can get involved.

Archbishops Call for ‘Great Wave of Prayer’ for Evangelism During Pentecost The Archbishops of Canterbury and York are inviting churches to pray for the evangelisation of the nation during the week before Pentecost Sunday.

The Archbishops have written to every serving parish priest in the Church of expressing their longing “to see a great wave of prayer across our land, throughout the and many other Churches” from 8th-15th May.

The week of prayer will culminate in ‘Beacon Events’ around the country over Pentecost weekend, where people will pray for the renewal of the Holy Spirit and the confidence to share their faith.

In their letter the Archbishops said: “At the heart of our prayers will be words that Jesus himself taught us – ‘Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.’ It is impossible to overstate the life-transforming power of the Lord’s Prayer. It is a prayer that is reassuring enough to be on the lips of the dying and yet dangerous enough to be banned in cinemas. It is famous enough to be spoken each day by billions in hundreds of languages and yet intimate enough to draw us ever closer into friendship with Jesus Christ. It is simple enough to be memorised by small children and yet profound enough to sustain a whole lifetime of prayer. When we pray it with sincerity and with joy, there is no imagining the new ways in which God can use us to his glory.” The Archbishops are suggesting various ways churches can engage with the week of prayer. These include holding a day or week of continuous ‘24/7’ prayer as , teams or deaneries; saying special prayers in Sunday worship; prayer walking; or handing out a novena prayer card to every congregation member. We have booklets “Nine Days of Prayer” please ask for one. Join in our Prayer from Hareby to Pentecost>

Eresby Hall News

After a very busy March celebrating Easter, the residents looked forward to a more relaxed April. We have had two special birthdays to celebrate in April as well as a visit by ‘Clothes For You’. Residents were able to think about Spring and Summer outfits for the months ahead.

Colleagues will also be encouraging all our residents to use their vote this May. Our voting campaign in 2015 was quite successful with several residents going to the polling station and we hope we can encourage more to vote this year.

Dementia Awareness Week starts on May 19th and Eresby Hall will be opening the doors to welcome visitors to join us in raising awareness of how to live well with dementia. There are activities and events running throughout the week and this coincides with The Order of St John Care Trust launching its Dementia strategy.

One of the regular visitors to Eresby Hall is Janet Enderby and her ice cream trolley. The residents enjoy a cornet with a jelly baby and chocolate.

On May 19th we have the ever popular Employee Awards where several of our colleagues were nominated last year with Audrey Parsons and Graham Unwin both being winners.

Do we listen and act upon the message?

I was asked a question at Chapter; “What for me is that special aspect in the service of Holy Communion, the Eucharist, which always hits the spot?”

Wow, how do you answer that? Perhaps you have an immediate answer, which I pray is not; none of it reaches any part of me. But, if I am very honest with myself, I fear people are being left untouched by what should be the backbone of their Christian life.

All very well for me to wax sort of lyrical about how I am touched by this awesome service and how I pray fervently to lead others to Christ through it, but what for me is that special moment? Generally it is always being with those I love and lead and sharing that most sacred meal together.

Specifically, well I became a little side tracked and began to think of those who will never have the chance to share anything together, let alone the message of our resurrected Lord. I thought of the story of the beggar who sat with a mirror in front of his face, reminding passers-by how fortunate they were and that maybe they could give a thought to how it would feel to be in his shoes. I thought of some hideous rich and privileged initiation when they were told to burn a £50 pound note in front of a beggar. I thought of that reading in James:

Anyone who listens to the message but does not act on it is like somebody looking in a mirror at the face nature gave him; he glances at himself and goes his way, and promptly forgets what he looked like. James 1: 23-24.

14 I thought of the sacrifice of our Lord and his resurrection. I thought of all the people I have had the awesome privilege of leading in the Eucharist as their priest and the words from James are very much in my mind. I know the thing that hits the spot; it is the confession. The sacrament of confession and absolution so directs my heart and my soul.

I listen to God’s word week by week, day by day; acting upon it is sometimes a very different matter. Yet, no matter how many times I read and listen to the word and fail to always put words into actions, if my intentions have been pure, or shall we say devoid of any evil intent, then God will forgive me and within the service of Holy Communion I can confess, be forgiven, receive the consecrated elements and go out into the world to once again try to do my very best.

When you come to a church service, what touches your spirit and feeds you, enables you to know how much God loves you and asks you to work in his world, for his glory?

FAMILY SERVICE

The congregation of St James Church was surprised to be greeted at the Family service on April 3rd by Mrs Bruin, a friendly brown bear. The theme of the service was ‘All creatures great and small’ and the children coloured in pictures of animals.

Reverend Joan Thornett welcomed Mrs Bruin to the service and later chatted with her about her life, what she liked eating, where she lived and how she cared for her cubs. Jane Parker and Margaret Cook had brought some animal friends with them; a cat, rabbit and monkey puppets and Reverend Joan introduced Holy Moley, a puppet mole who lived in a box. The children talked about how they should care for different pets and sang the song ‘Who built the ark?’ A poem read by Sam and Rupert Parsons, entitled ‘When the time was right’ talked about God creating the earth and Jane Parker read about the building of the ark from the book of Genesis. Joan reminded us of our responsibility to care for the environment and the animals that live within it. Some of the congregation received a bear hug from Mrs Bruin. Grateful thanks to Sue West for her help and to the congregation for once again being such good sports. Sue was certainly not cold in her bear costume! The Family service team really appreciate the support they receive. The next Family service is on May 1st at 10.00am. The theme will be Buttons.

We raised £258 which will help towards the upkeep of the church.
