SALE INFORMATION • Please help us by getting store cattle on site early and be penned by 10am and selling will commence at 12.00pm approx. Fatstock should be in the market well before 10am. The market will be open at 6.30am approx. • Refreshments will not be available. CONDITIONS OF SALE All heifers are assumed to be clear of calf on the day of sale unless it is announced to the contrary. If (i) within 6 calendar months after the day of sale a heifer warranted as aforesaid proves to be in calf and (ii) within 6 calendar months and 5 days after the day of sale the purchaser gives written notice to the Auctioneers that such a heifer has proved to be in calf at the date of sale either (a) the vendor shall pay to the purchaser a sum equal to 25% of the purchase money to cover all losses or (b) the purchaser may return such heifer(s) and her calf (if any) to the vendor who will reimburse the purchaser with the full amount of the purchase price (purchaser to pay for return haulage). All steers are assumed to be properly castrated on the day of sale but if any have been imperfectly castrated and no announcement to this effect is made by the Auctioneers at the time of sale, then the purchaser shall be entitled to return such animal(s) upon the day of sale or within 14 + 5 days of the sale, but after removal of the animal from the sale yard a vets certificate must be produced stating that such animal(s) are imperfectly castrated (vendor to pay for the return haulage). Vendors are responsible for the correctness of all information relating to the identification of all animals. The range of situations, and of emotions, to which we can be exposed is huge. These things help to form the richness of human living. But in themselves they can sometimes be immensely difficult to handle. Jesus’ promise was to be with his friends. Although they experienced the crushing sadness of his death, and the huge sense of betrayal that most of them felt in terms of their own abandonment of him, they also experienced the joy of his resurrection and the happiness of new times spent with him. They would naturally have understood that his promise to ‘be with them’ meant that he would not physically leave them. However, what Jesus meant when he said that they would not be left on their own was that the Holy Spirit would always be with them. It is the Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, that we celebrate during the month of May. Jesus is taken from us, body and all, but the Holy Spirit is poured out for us and on to us. The Feast of the Holy Spirit is Pentecost. It happens at the end of Eastertide, and thus marks the very last transition that began weeks before when, on Ash Wednesday, we entered the wilderness in preparation for Holy Week and Eastertide to come.

Mr. Johnson also by way of explanation of his drawing contributed the following Paper upon TOWN CROSSES, which was, in his absence, read by Mr. North:— THE subject of "Town Crosses" is open to much enquiry. Without going very closely into the matter, I have found much to interest any one who takes pleasure in rambling amongst the relics of the past—not, however, so much from the erections themselves, as from the associations which are connected with them. They seem to divide themselves into three distinct heads or classes: Market Crosses, Memorial Crosses, and Town or Village Crosses. Of the antiquity of the first-named we have plenty of proof as far back as the thirteenth century, and I need only quote that in existence at Higham Ferrers, the capitals and mouldings of which are decidedly the work of that period. The form of the Market Cross is generally polygonal, with an open archway niche on two of its sides. The really good specimens to be found are few. More frequently, structures of a debased character, some sur­ mounted by a kind of dome, seem to have replaced the original ones. Evidently, the centre or the principal part of the town was used as the site of these erections, and some of the principal his­ torical events are connected with them. The illustrated descrip­ tions to be met with give but little idea of the style (there were no Le Keux or Jewitts in those early days) but the remains are curious, and from many of the occurrences which are depicted in manuscripts and other ancient works, being found in connection with the Town Crosses, it is clear that they were looked upon with a degree of importance, if not of veneration.
