Academic year 2019-2020 DIOCESE OF LINCOLN BOARD OF EDUCATION THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND

2 From the Diocesan Director of Education

Dear Colleagues, I am delighted to be able to offer you the 2019/20 SLA and course programme. You will see that we have further developed the offer. As ever we have taken into account all that you have fed back to us. I’m particularly keen to point out the new Governors’ Network Meetings (see diary of events page 14) which are free to all schools in the SLA. I think that they will really help governors to become confident in their complex roles and share best practice - you can send along as many governors as you want! Our support for RE, SIAMS, collective worship and leadership obviously continues to grow but our emphasis this year is on well-being and mental health. I’m delighted that our Education Development Officer Lynsey Norris is a qualified Mental Health First Aid Instructor running three courses this year to train members of your team to be Mental Health First Aiders (see page 16). The Diocesan Education Team also continues to offer Bespoke and Off the Peg sessions (see page 12), training delivered by our officers to one school or a cluster at a mutually agreed time and place. The team continues to strive to meet your needs so that you can meet the needs of the 28,000 pupils in your care, providing an education of Excellence, Exploration and Encouragement within the love of God. Thank you for all that you do. God bless.

16 Additional Courses: Mental Health First Aid The Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses are for anyone who works with, lives with or supports young people aged 8-18.

We train the adults in a young person’s life to have the skills and confidence to step in, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. In doing so, they can speed up a young person’s recovery, stop issues from developing into a crisis, and ultimately save lives. But more than that, by giving these adults the information and skills to look after their own mental health, we want them to set an example for young people. We want adults to be able to show young people that mental ill health is a part of life in just the same way as physical ill health, that it’s OK to talk about and it’s OK to ask for help. We hope that by giving people the tools to open up these conversations, we can empower them to create mentally healthy, supportive environments in their families, schools, youth groups and communities. Let’s create a future where we all know how to look after our own mental wellbeing, so preventable issues don’t arise in the first place. A future where every young person has access to support if they need it. The sessions are led by Lynsey Norris, Diocesan Education Development Officer and consist of two full days training. Lynsey is a fully accredited Mental Health First Aid instructor from Mental Health First Aid England.

£200 per person or contact us for a bespoke price for training up to 16 members of your whole school Dates: Tue 29th Oct & Wed 20th Nov 2019 Thurs 16th Jan & Wed 29th Jan 2020 Thurs 11th Jun & Wed 1st July 2020 For more information please contact [email protected] To book please contact [email protected]

17 Additional Courses: Understanding Christianity Understanding Christianity – a national-accredited training programme produced by the Church of England Education office and RE today This is a substantial resource to support your teaching of Christianity in Religious Education. The key purpose of this project is to help all teachers support pupils in developing their own thinking and their understanding of Christianity, as a contribution to their understanding of the world and their own experience within it. We aim to see pupils leave school with a coherent understanding of Christian belief and practice. Pupils from 4-14 explore the significant theological concepts within Christianity as part of developing their wider religious, theological and cultural literacy. We seek to support teachers in developing their own knowledge and understanding of Christianity theology to be able to teach with confidence. The sessions are led by Gillian Georgiou, Diocesan RE Adviser and consist of four sessions over the course of two to three academic terms: Session 1 is a half day, session 2 is a two-hour twilight, session 3 is a two-hour twilight and session 4 is a half day. The training programme includes the resources itself, Picturing Christianity and password protected access to online materials.

£350 per person Date of initial training:Thursday 26th September

Diocesan Service Level Agreement & Professional Development Programme 2019-2020 DIOCESE OF LINCOLN BOARD OF EDUCATION THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND

44 Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference Supporting staff and students to be mentally healthy. • Two in five newly qualified teachers experience mental health problems • The number of teachers seeking mental health support has risen by 35% in the past 12 months (April 2018) • One third of education professionals said their job had made them feel stressed most or all of the time in the past few weeks, compared to 18% of the UK workforce overall (2017 health survey) • 53% had also considered leaving the sector within the past two years because of health pressures. (2017 health survey) • Preschool children: one in eighteen 2 to 4 year olds had a disorder • Primary school years: one in ten 5 to 10 year olds had a disorder • Secondary school years: one in seven 11 to 16 year olds had a disorder • Transitioning to adulthood: one in six 17 to 19 year olds had a disorder. In a society with increasing children and adults suffering with mental health problems and struggling to look after their mental wellbeing, we will be hosting a conference tackling some of these issues. Working with headteachers and staff from around the diocese we are looking at what schools need to help support staff and students. The conference will have national key note speakers, workshops to choose from to suit your school needs, and help in getting support into your school when it is needed. The conference is just the start of support for our schools, let’s work together to have mentally healthy schools for our staff and students.

Keep your eyes open for announcements of the date and speakers.
