Owing to the identity of the name and to the fact that he had been one of the royal chaplains bishop Everard for a long time was affirmed to be Everard the son of Roger de Montgomery, Everard fitz count as he was usually called, till in 1872 a writer in Notes and, Queries adduced arguments which showed this identification to be untenable.' It is not necessary to repeat the arguments here. Since then no attempt has been made to find out who he was. Although there is nothing in the shape of definite proof there are some slight indications which suggest that he may have been Everard de CaIna, who also probably was one of Henry I's chaplains. Bartholomew Cotton' appears to be the only one of the chroniclers to record that bishop Everard at some time in his life had been archdeacon of Salis- bury. It is not easy to find information about arch- deacons at this early,date but it happens that William of Malmesbury3relates a story of a miraculous cure by S. Aldhem performed upon Everard, one of bishop Osmund's archdeacons. To be an archdeacon Everard would be at least 2.5years old and bishop Osmund died in 1099. From these two factors we get the year 1074 for the latest date of his birth, it was probably a year or two earlier. Calne being in the diocese of Salisbury there is nothing improbable in a member of a family taking its name from that place, if destined for the church, being appointed to an archdeaconry of that diocese. -

The students will understand the meaning of the “Four Instruments of Unity:” The Archbishop of Canterbury; the Meeting of Primates; the Lambeth Conference of Bishops; and, the Anglican Consultative Council. The students will encounter the various levels of structure and governance in which we live as Episcopalians and Anglicans. The students will learn of and appreciate an outline of our history in the context of Anglicanism. The students will see themselves as part of a worldwide communion of fellowship and mission as Christians together with others from throughout the globe. The students will read and discuss the “Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral” (BCP pages 876 – 877) in order to appreciate the essentials of an Anglican identity. The Tale of a Fish How Westminster Abbey became a Royal Peculiar For Edric it had been a bad week’s fishing in the Thames for salmon and an even worse Sunday, a day on which he knew ought not to have been working but needs must. The wind and the rain howled across the river from the far banks of that dreadful and wild isle called Thorney with some justification. The little monastic church recently built on the orders of King Sebert stood forlornly waiting to be consecrated the next day by Bishop Mellitus, the first Bishop of London, who would be travelling west from the great Minster of St Paul’s in the City of London. As he drew in his empty nets and rowed to the southern bank he saw an old man dressed in strange and foreign clothing hailing him. Would Edric take him across even at this late hour to Thorney Island? Hopeful for some reward, Edric rowed across the river, moaning to the old man about the poor fishing he had suffered and received some sympathy as the old man seemed to have had some experience in the same trade. After the old man had alighted and entered the little church, suddenly the building was ablaze with dazzling lights and Edric heard chanting and singing and saw a ladder of angels leading from the sky to the ground. Edric was transfixed. Then there was silence and darkness. The old man returned and admonished Edric for fishing on a Sunday but said that if he caste his nets again the next day into the river his reward would be great. -

From the Bishop of Oxford As a Diocese, we are prayerfully seeking the person whom God is calling to be the next Bishop of Dorchester, one of three Area bishops in the Diocese of Oxford. At the heart of our vision we discern a call to become a more Christ-like Church for the sake of God’s world: contemplative, compassionate and courageous. Most of all we are seeking a new Bishop for Dorchester who will seek to model those qualities and inspire the Church of England across the Dorchester Area to live them out in our daily lives. Our new Bishop will therefore be a person of prayer, immersed in the Scriptures and the Christian tradition, able to be at home with and to love the clergy, parishes and benefices in many different church traditions and many different social contexts. We are seeking a person able to watch over themselves in a demanding role and to model healthy and life-giving patterns of ministry. We want our new bishop to be an inspiring leader of worship, preacher and teacher in a range of different contexts and to be a pastor to the ministers of the Area. The Bishop of Dorchester leads a strong and able Area Team in taking forward the common vision of the Diocese of Oxford in the Dorchester Area. John Thomas Mullock: What His Books Reveal Ágnes Juhász-Ormsby The Episcopal Library of St. John’s is among the few nineteenth- century libraries that survive in their original setting in the Atlantic provinces, and the only one in Newfoundland and Labrador.1 It was established by John Thomas Mullock (1807–69), Roman Catholic bishop of Newfoundland and later of St. John’s, who in 1859 offered his own personal collection of “over 2500 volumes as the nucleus of a Public Library.” The Episcopal Library in many ways differs from the theological libraries assembled by Mullock’s contemporaries.2 When compared, for example, to the extant collection of the Catholic bishop of Victoria, Charles John Seghers (1839–86), whose life followed a similar pattern to Mullock’s, the division in the founding collection of the Episcopal Library between the books used for “private” as opposed to “public” theological study becomes even starker. Seghers’s books showcase the customary stock of a theological library with its bulky series of manuals of canon law, collections of conciliar and papal acts and bullae, and practical, dogmatic, moral theological, and exegetical works by all the major authors of the Catholic tradition.3 In contrast to Seghers, Mullock’s library, although containing the constitutive elements of a seminary library, is a testimony to its found- er’s much broader collecting habits. Mullock’s books are not restricted to his philosophical and theological studies or to his interest in univer- sal church history.
