LETTER FROM THE

Lead theft in our diocese

The past 12 months have been a particularly difficult year for many of our due to a significant rise in lead thefts. In total, 30 churches have been targeted, and despite the arrest of four suspects in December 2019 the problem has not abated – within the first two weeks of the new year two further thefts had taken place.

Lead theft is a devastating crime not only for the , but also for the wider community. The cost involved for the replacement of the lead using terne-coated stainless steel – a far less attractive material for metal thieves – can be considerable. Most insurers will cover the cost of a replacement roof if the church is alarmed, has SmartWater and all of the appropriate signage. Where a church doesn’t have an alarm, but has the other precautions it is likely the pay-out will be capped at around £7500. With the latter the net result is that parishes have to find the repair and reinstatement costs from a combination of church funds and charitable grant givers.

On average the replacement of an aisle roof can cost in the region of £30,000, and a nave roof, with more scaffolding involved, can be as much as £70–80,000. Therefore, it is in everybody’s interests to try and minimise the risk of lead theft from a church. With this in mind, and if there is lead at your church, here is some advice:

• Make sure that where you already have SmartWater or similar it is up to date, registered and the appropriate signage has been installed. • If you have an alarm ensure it is checked regularly and serviced as required. • Be on the alert for suspicious activity around the church and ask parishioners who live close to the church to be especially vigilant. Any suspicious activity can be reported using the police 101 number, and if you think a crime is in progress then ring 999. • Further advice about lead theft can be found on the diocesan website, where there is also advice on what to do if the worst happens and who to contact in the diocesan Church Buildings department if it does.

Prayer: Evil and the Challenge of Good What can separate us from the love Christ? Can affliction or hardship, persecution, hunger, nakedness, danger of the sword? I am convinced that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 8:35-9

Christ the true Light, who enlightens the whole creation, Fill us with the joy of your light and love. O radiance of the Father, pure and holy one, dwelling in light, Drive from us all evil passions and ill feelings; Protect us from all harm and spiritual attack. Grant us to live according to your commandments in purity of heart; Grant us your mercy and hope of the day of resurrections. Amen.

Lenten Reflections - Michael Perham George Herbert, the saintly Anglican priest and poet of the seventeenth century, spoke of this season of Lent not as a fast, but as a feast. And later in this service, within the Eucharistic Prayer, we shall find ourselves 7 praying: ‘As we prepare to celebrate the Easter feast with joyful hearts and minds we bless you for your mercy.’ Joyful hearts and minds? Joyful hearts and minds in Lent? Feast? Lent a feast? Is that how you see it? More often people have seen it as a dreary dour season. They have either rather resented it and wished its 40 days over as quickly as possible. Or, just a little more positively, they have seen it as a kind of purgatory through which we need to pass because of our rebellion and sin. Dreary and dour. But joy and feast? That strikes a different note. Perhaps the Church has gone soft. Perhaps the old disciplines – the fasting, the prayer, the abstinence, the penitence, the spiritual reading, the solemn music – of Lent are now thought inappropriate. Is that why it is joy and feast? No need to go in for this giving-up business? Leave all that behind. I want to say that I believe that we need the fasting, the prayer, the abstinence, the penitence, the spiritual reading and the solemn music more than ever. An age where there is more food on the supermarket shelves than ever before needs to learn the wisdom of fasting. A world where we rush from one excitement to another, or one duty to another, needs space and silence that lead to prayer. A culture of indulgence needs abstinence. A society that has lost its moral certainties needs repentance. A generation that communicates by sound-bites needs spiritual reading. A Church that celebrates a friendly accessible compassionate God needs music that pulls us up short before the majesty and the holiness of God. And a time of economic turmoil, of international instability and of fears for the planet, needs fasting, prayer, abstinence, penitence and much more in generous measure. So is this talk of joyful heart and mind, this sense of feast, mistaken? No. The joy is not in escaping the old disciplines but in embracing them. The feast is the fast. Lent is one of those ‘turn the conventions of the world upside down’ kind of seasons. Praying and fasting and all the other things begin to have their effect quite quickly. Within days, let alone weeks, we can sense that we are less enslaved to the material, more in touch with the spiritual, healthier, more alive, more alert, more sensitive, more human. All that comes from the time-honoured disciplines. We begin to feel good. Feel-good factor. It’s not Far from feel-good factor to joyful heart and mind. But it is the disciplines that get us there. The fast itself begins to feel like a feast.

“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

Finance February review… Extracts taken from the presentation by Jane Hodgson, Stewardship (Generous Living) Officer, Lincoln Diocese.

What is Stewardship? In the dictionary it is defined as ‘taking care of something.’ So the fact it’s defined as “taking care of something” implies it’s not ours in the first place and that we are looking after it on someone’s behalf. Stewardship is something we hold in our hands. Be it either our time, talents or money but we need to hold it lightly because the principle of biblical Stewardship is that everything we have is given to us by God. God owns everything, we are simply temporary caretakers or custodians on his behalf. Stewardship is part of being a disciple of Jesus - Stewardship is an act of worship. We honour God and take our offerings to the altar. Giving generously shows that we have a deep trust and strong faith that God will provide for all our needs. The question is - What are we doing as individuals to be faithful Stewards of what we have been given? Time The first thing we have to steward is our time. We see time as a precious commodity and we never have enough of it but the one thing we know is that time stops for no man. We are all given the same amount of hours in the day but it’s what we do with it that counts. So what I would ask is…are we using our time wisely? What can you do to be a better steward of your time? Talents God gave us all individual talents and gifts. We are all made unique in his eyes. We were all created to do a certain purpose or calling in our lives so what’s your purpose or reason for being here on earth? Are you fulfilling your purpose, your calling? You may be already be exactly where you need to be or you may feel unfulfilled or like you still have more to give? It may be something that you would like to have a go at in church but have never dared to tell anyone or “put yourself out there” or it may be something in the local community that you want to help with. Most of the time we are fearful of getting it wrong aren’t we? but the older I get the more I realise people are just grateful that you gave it a go. … …’too old to try something new’… …”Feel the fear and do it anyway”… …’we learn from these experiences and move on usually stronger and better for it.’ … Money The subject that nobody likes to talk about but it’s a fact that we need money to fund mission, outreach, pay the bills, pay clergy salaries and to repair and maintain the church. We see money as a security blanket or a rainy day fund so we often hold

9 it close but in doing that we don’t trust God to provide for our needs. Giving is a biblical principle and it should be prayerfully and carefully considered and reviewed on a regular basis. A principle that the bible teaches is proportional giving or “tithing” as it also known. … When we are able to give generously to God it shows that our heart isn't tied to our money and that we love God more than our money. A measure of how sacrificial you are would be………….if the church gave you back your offering one week what would you be able to buy with it? Food for thought isn’t it? … A famous quote by Martin Luther is “Every man needs two conversions the first is his heart, the second his wallet.” … … Money is an integral part of our daily existence, therefore, our handling of money becomes a spiritual issue, making the correct use of money directly related to being a disciple of Jesus

Here we go again…again!

Having been successful in our application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund - and subsequent third- party funding – at long last work is finally about to start on repairs to the south aisle and porch roofs. As a result, the church will once again, be decked out in the, now familiar, scaffolding.

For safety reasons access to the church building will be restricted, during the works, to the North door, and visitors to the church who require internal access – outside of normal service times, are asked to contact myself, details below. Visitors to the churchyard are asked to keep clear of areas of scaffold, work vans, equipment etc.

Should anyone require any further information regarding the works please do get in touch. Further updates ‘as and when’.

Have you noticed that Easter Eggs are in the shops already?! I know, I can hear you say that in some shops they were being put out just after Christmas. It seems as if the world is constantly looking for the next thing that is on the horizon, that we are to aim for. As far as the shops are concerned, of course this is just commercial opportunity to increase sales and make bigger profits in a retail world that is already struggling. But surely, we need to make sure that Easter is not just a “commercial opportunity” but is the prime reason for us to make a stand for what is pivotal in our faith.

Before we get to that wonderful day of Easter Sunday and it’s celebration, there is Lent. A time of spiritual reflection, of assessment, and maybe even of abstinence. This year’s Archbishop’s Lent book is: ”Saying yes to Life” by Ruth Valerio. It is a book that is very much of the moment; looking to how our faith impacts on how we take care of God’s world, and how we consider environmental issues in light of the faith we profess.

During Lent there will be study groups meeting-up across the deanery, looking at the issues raised in this book, and its associated online material. It looks at the elements of creation, in Genesis chapter1. So why not come along? The meetings will be held throughout the deanery, and one of the venues is Partney Rectory, held on Wednesdays at 3pm, beginning on the 4th of March. Look forward to seeing you there!

Blessings Teresa

H.O.P. Events in 2019: H.O.P.s Sixth Birthday was celebrated in the Parish room & was enjoyed by all ages. Easter: We decorated egg shapes to hang on a small tree in church and made a communal fingerprint chick poster for the children’s corner. We decorated hardboiled eggs and painted an egg biscuit with food colouring. In church Margaret read the Easter story and we sang “We have a king who rides a donkey”. Activities at Open Day in June. Coach Trip to Ely was very enjoyable. We split up with some visiting the Cathedral, some taking a short river trip, shopping etc. A number of us discovered a lovely exhibition by the local woodworking group. Some managed to eat their picnic lunch outside despite the chilly breeze, others opted for one of the warmer indoor places. Harvest: We made corn dollies, bread rolls with premade dough, and small scarecrows. We made waxed food wraps with beeswax kindly brought by Phillip Maddison who keeps bees. He also brought honey and honeycomb for us to try. We listened intently as he told us about keeping bees. We finished with a picnic tea. The children sat on rugs and blankets on the Parish Room floor with the door open. (It was too windy to eat outside.) The adults sat at the tables! Games afternoon: All ages enjoyed playing a variety of traditional board games. Preparing for Christmas: Follow the star: We made lots of stars in different ways: origami, twigs, silver thread on dark paper plates, and peppermint stars dipped in chocolate. Everyone helped with a lovely picture of Bethlehem under a starry sky for the board in the children’s corner in church. After refreshments we went into church for a short play about a despondent star (Rev. Jean!) who becomes the star of Bethlehem. By candlelight we sang “It was on a starry night”.

The Old Hall, Halton Holegate News January has been a mild month, but our wild birds have still been hungry. We took part in the great bird watch, and really enjoyed identifying the different birds that came into our garden. Tony’s exotic animals came to visit us as well, some were scary and some were cute, we will be welcoming Tony back again in the summer for our garden party.

We have just started our photography group and we took advantage of the great weather on Wednesday on our visit to , the Canada geese came very close to us while we were feeding them. We had tea, coffee and cake in the Skegness aquarium and looked at the lovely fish there.

We are currently looking for any cameras or photo equipment and also looking for a desktop computer to download our pictures to, if anyone can help.

Characteristics of a Good Steward? • Willingness – For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what on has – not according to what one does not have. 2 Corinthians 8:12 • Obedience – Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. Psalm 128:1 • Discipline – For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but 13

gives us power, love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

• Compassion – Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 • Gratitude – You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9 • Generous – Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord your God has blessed you. Deuteronomy 16:17

Fran’s Bit!

Once again Lent is upon us. And our encouragement this year is ‘Saying Yes to Life’. This book by Ruth Valerio is our Lent course for this year, and I will be alluding to it during my sermons throughout Lent. But that means I have to read it! And that means I have to carve out time in my diary to set aside for that reading. And that time needs to be regular! And that is soooo difficult.

Everyone is busy, many are too busy. The biggest problem of busyness is that something has to go – and all too often, that something is God. Even vicars can struggle to find time in the diary to maintain a vibrant relationship with God!

But when we look at our priorities, is there anything more important than that relationship?

So I have made time in my diary. I have actually put appointments in my diary every day of Lent to have 1 hour of ‘me’ time with God. It is not, actually, the same time every day – that is impossible, but it is in the diary, and for those times I will not be contactable. Am I being self-indulgent? Possibly, but it is the only way I know to develop that vital relationship with God which sustains all of life.

Why not give it a go yourself!

FAMILY SERVICE Candlemas on February 2nd was celebrated at the Family Service led by Reverend Joan Thornett. This day may also be known as the purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary or the presentation of Jesus at the temple. Appropriate readings from Malachi and St Luke were read by Bill Rose and Jane Parker.

14

During the first part of the service the children were decorating candle holders and they distributed candles to the 35 people present during the service.

Reverend Joan talked about the old man, Simeon, who had idle dreams but lived in hope that the ancient prophecy would be fulfilled. He was content when he saw God's glory in the tiny child brought into the Temple by Mary and Joseph. Anna, an elderly prophetess, also had great patience and her faithfulness was rewarded when she saw the Christchild. Reverend Joan reminded the congregation that it is never too late to experience the glory of God and the many candles on the altar and those given out were a symbol of light and glory.

Jane and Margaret did a quiz with the children of anagrams of peoples' surnames and the jobs they might do. Cook, Parker, Baker, Skinner, Woodward, Smith and Taylor were the names used ending with Chandler, a candle maker. The children were asked to take the candles home and light them as a reminder of Jesus, light of the world. The next Family service will be on March 1st, St David's day and will be a Family Communion.

COME FLY WITH ME

Come fly with me, come take my hand, we’ll cross the seas to foreign lands. Come fly with me see the lovely river Med twisting and turning like a fine silver thread, set in lush green fields and pastures serene like soft velvet pillows, a picturesque scene. Come fly with me, know a breath-taking sigh at beautiful seen from the sky. Patchwork golden squares of corn and wheat filigree edged with a lacework of trees. The counties of England you will see from the air, miniature villages sprinkled here and there. Farmhouses of stone straight from a Camelot dream, all this if you’ll only come fly with me. Feast your eyes in delight, look away if you can, words cannot hope to describe this glorious land.

We’ll leave below the madding crowds and soar so high above the clouds. Yes, high above translucent clouds so delicate, we’ll drift, with warm sunshine reflecting bright on silvery wing tips. Come fly with me, up there you will find tranquillity and peace of mind. The great castles of England’s shires so grand will seem tiny enough to take up into your hand. Over the last 2-3 years we have been striving to clear up the churchyard of discarded and over grown vegetation. With the help of various volunteers from the village we have been fairly successful in making it more accessible, and uncovering grave surround stones and important headstones. Having planted trees around the new extension area we leave a legacy for the future. With this in mind and following the 20

Diocesan Eco initiative we are therefore looking at how we can best tend to our calm and peaceful area with sustainability in mind. A larger area also brings into question, how our already strained finances can cope. We shall be attending a meeting this month to look how best to deal with all of the above, with advice in the first instance from Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and speakers from the Gods Acre project.

It is worth noting, that our churchyard contractor has over a number of years been conscious of wild life and ecology and has therefore left selected areas for this purpose. However, in future it may look less manicured depending upon the advice and guidance from the above. If anyone would like to attend the meeting, or discuss it in any way please get in touch with me on 07790 214675 or email [email protected] Basil Harwood (Churchwarden)

ERESBY NEWS

Playing dominoes is a favourite game for some of the residents so The Old Hall at Halton Holegate has been approached to arrange some matches.

The new Manager and new Care Leader have both moved from Ermine House in Lincoln to Eresby and residents have now linked up in order to play games and have lunch with the Eresby residents on January 28th. Ermine has its own mini-bus and a fund has now been started at Eresby to raise money to buy one. The money for this will be put in a separate account and the Order of St John will match fund. If anyone would like to donate to this fund please ensure that it is clear it is for the mini-bus. This will mean the residents can be taken out more frequently.

Flower arranging will start again in February ready for Valentine's day and the volunteers will meet again in April to prepare arrangements ready for Easter.

The Scouts, Cubs and Beavers will be visiting when the Beavers will be reading poetry, the Cubs will be singing and the Scouts will participate in learning skills. Eresby School will be sending students to the Hall for work experience and they are prepared to help in the Summer with garden parties.

An Awards ceremony was held on January 20th when every resident received an Oscar and certificate. The awards were for mindfulness, the best poet, the best animal lover, the best dancing Diva, the best singer, the friendliest person and there were many others categories.

Grateful thanks go once again to Sainsbury's who raised £450 selling second hand books and Lesley was presented with B and Q vouchers for that amount. J and A on the industrial estate gave the Hall hampers containing biscuits. sweets and crisps etc. at Christmas. Many thanks to them.

KATH BELL

CONGRATULATIONS to Kath Bell who was 100 years old on February 4th

Kath lived at Halton Fenside during the war and remembers the black out and the bomber planes flying over the house. One incident she remembers vividly from her childhood was when 22 she was given a brown rocking horse. Mr Shaw, the butcher, visited the house on his meat round and Kath was crying and when asked the reason for her tears she told Mr Shaw she wanted a white horse. That evening, armed with a tin of white paint, Mr Shaw changed the colour of her rocking horse. Kath enjoyed sewing and making jam. She regularly attends the Church services in the Hall. She is still an excellent flower arranger and received her Oscar for Best Flower Girl.

About 4 years ago Kath decided it was time for her to go into Eresby. She said she has been very well cared for and very much appreciates the kindness of everyone. What a lovely lady.
