LETTER FROM THE DIOCESE

Sharing in a ‘global wave of prayer’

Now in its fourth year, Thy Kingdom Come has united over a million Christians from more than 65 different denominations and traditions, in more than 114 countries, to pray for evangelisation. This annual event takes place between Ascension and Pentecost, which this year will be from Thursday, 30th May until Sunday, 9th June.

An ecumenical prayer movement, in Thy Kingdom Come has the support of the main heads of denominations and network leaders, including Archbishop Justin Welby (Archbishop of Canterbury and a President of Churches Together in England), Archbishop Dr John Sentamu (Archbishop of York), the Revd Michaela Youngson (President of Methodist Conference, 2018–2019), the Revd Lynn Green (General Secretary of the Baptist Union of Great Britain), and the Revd Dr Hugh Osgood (Moderator of the Free Churches Group and a President of Churches Together in England).

During the 11 days, Christians will pray for people they know and love to come to faith in Christ (‘pray for five’), and for their communities. They will gather in small groups, as part of church congregations, in families or as individuals to pray. Churches will organise a variety of events and activities, some of them ecumenical, including prayer walking, 24/1 or 24/11 continuous prayer, prayer stations, and special services and Beacon events.

In addition to a new Thy Kingdom Come website and other resources, this year there will be a special event in Trafalgar Square in on Pentecost Sunday (9th June) to mark the end of Thy Kingdom Come 2019. Thousands of Christians are expected to gather for the service, and worship on the day will include worship leader Matt Redman and the Kingdom Choir, who rose to fame as a result of their spectacular performance at the Royal Wedding.

As highlighted in the diocesan magazine, Crosslincs, a special Beacon event is planned for Lincoln Cathedral for Saturday, 8th June 2019. The event will run from 10am until 12.15pm, with an optional Eucharist at 12.30pm, and it will feature several groupings from around our diocese and include many different ways of praying.

3

In addition, and for the last half-hour, there will be an opportunity to gather together for the official launch of the Community of St Hugh, the diocesan community of prayer. More details may be obtained by contacting John Leach on 01522 50 40 50 x4108 or by emailing [email protected] The Thy Kingdom Come website may be found at https://www.thykingdomcome.global/

Archdeacon’s VISITATION SERVICE Tuesday 7th May 7pm St James Spilsby

Please come and celebrate the tremendous contribution our Churchwardens make as they take on their work for the coming year. Please pray for them and all of us as we support each other in the work of Christ in his Church.

BEING A CHURCHWARDEN

It can be daunting or mystifying to contemplate the task of being a churchwarden. This is a brief and introductory summary of the task of a churchwarden and is written primarily for those who have recently been elected to serve as a churchwarden of their in the diocese of Lincoln, or who are thinking of standing.

WHAT IS A CHURCHWARDEN ?

A churchwarden is ......

The Bishop’s officer - when the archdeacon admits you as a churchwarden, they are formally appointing you to this office on behalf of the Bishop. The Bishop may want to consult with you about the parish during the year, and you may need to consult with him. If you need to resign in the course of the year, it is the Bishop you write to! A support for the vicar/rector/ priest-in-charge

6

Clergy look to their churchwardens to be dependable colleagues and (hopefully) supportive friends in their shared responsibility for the life of the parish. ‘Co-operating with the incumbent’ is required of wardens (Canon E1*) ‘Foremost in representing the laity’ (CanonE1*) Lay people will often follow the example and lead of their churchwardens both in the PCC and more generally in the parish. They will sometimes come to a churchwarden with their concerns about the church. A churchwarden’s wisdom and common sense are great assets for a church. Responsible for some church property and for order in church services Churchwardens have responsibilities concerning the safe keeping of certain items of the church and often for the maintenance of the building, though this can be delegated. The managing of church services (e.g. the sidesmen and the welcoming of newcomers) often falls to the churchwardens. A ‘caretaker’ during a vacancy The Bishop will probably make the rural dean and the churchwardens caretakers of the parish during a vacancy, ‘sequestrators’ in legal language. So there will be further demands when a parish is between vicars. So it does take commitment to do justice to the task of serving the church as a churchwarden. A ‘deputy warden’, though not an official position, can in practice greatly ease the burden of a busy churchwarden.

Confirmation Service Thursday 11th July St James Spilsby 7pm

Please come and support the common life we have as Christians as we grow in faith and love.

“Congratulations on wanting to explore confirmation with the . Confirmation can be an important part of a lifetime journey of faith as a follower of Jesus Christ. The first step will be to talk to your local vicar.

When you speak to your vicar, they will usually invite you to a few meetings (4pm Sunday afternoons?) to help you get ready for the service. This is a good way to explore your faith with others who are also thinking about confirmation and is a safe place to ask any questions you have about God, Jesus and the journey of faith. These are some common questions about confirmation, and the local vicar will be delighted to explain all that’s involved too. 7

Confirmation is a special church service in which a person confirms the promises that were made when they were baptized. If you were baptized at a christening when you were a child, your parents and godparents made these promises on your behalf. As a young person or adult, you may be ready to affirm these promises for yourself and commit your life to following Jesus Christ. At a confirmation service, you make these promises for yourself. Your friends and family as well as the local Christian community will be there to promise to support and pray for you. The local bishop will lay their hands on your head and ask God’s Holy Spirit to give you the strength and commitment to live God’s way for the rest of your life.” https://www.churchofengland.org/life-events/confirmations/confirmation- faqs

Are you feeling the Love?

By the time we read this we will have celebrated the most incredible event the world has ever experienced in the resurrection of Christ. The joy we all shared on Easter Sunday is there for us on each day of the year, if we chose to accept and reflect it.

In our world today people often perceive Christians as being all doom and gloom, who are no fun. I wonder, do you remember Private Fraser from Dad’s Army and his catch phrase (said in his Scottish accent), “we are all doomed”, but the reality is far from it. We may give the impression that we are very dour people, and we may keep our joy well hidden, but sometimes we need to let others see it and let it overflow, so much so that it spills over. There is nothing more infectious than someone who is truly passionate about their faith. People we meet may feel intrigued and attracted to find out more about our faith and that being a Christian is not a series of dos and don’ts. It is something that changes the way we live.

Love is the key ingredient; loving all, even those who may irritate us or criticise us is difficult, but it can be done with God’s help. Loving all, despite colour, class or orientation is of primary importance. Joy comes out of knowing the one we follow and not being afraid to share our passion for Christ with those we come into contact with.

Ours is not a lukewarm faith, but a vibrant faith in Christ risen, whose power can change and transform any situation.

Blessings Teresa

FRAN’S BIT

This year, the focus for Christian Aid Week is Sierra Leone. This is a country in West Africa noted for its connection with the slave trade. It is from that country that thousands of captives were taken as slaves to the ‘civilised’ world.

Sierra Leone is also burdened with debt following the Ebola crisis in 2014 - 2016. More than 11,000 people died during the crisis, and Sierra

10

Leone was forced to accept loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help it cope with the crisis.

As a result of the heavy loan repayments, Sierra Leone now lacks funds for proper health clinics, health training and enough ambulances. This makes it the most dangerous place in the world to become a mother. Every day 10 mothers die in child birth.

Christian Aid Week (12 – 18 May) will raise funds to assist in the provision of health care in Sierra Leone. There is also an encouragement to petition the Chancellor to call for Sierra Leone’s debt to be written off. Last Year, Christian Aid week raised £8m for Haiti. This year, in St Luke’s Church, Stickney, we will be holding our Silver Cross and Copper Path event. All donations will be gratefully received, so let Rev. Fran have all your loose change!

CHURCH – BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT! On Sunday 26 May we will be having another experimental & experiential Church event. We will be holding a ‘Campfire Church’ at 6.00pm at The Olive Tree, Kirkby Mill, East Kirkby, with kind permission from Peter and Linda Strickland. We will be worshipping in the outdoors with music and readings and a real campfire. Do come dressed for the weather.

West Keal Concert - Teamwork

Our concert on a chilly evening on 3rd April was greatly enjoyed by a very appreciative audience who, thanks to our new boiler, could not see their breath!

Bolingbroke bell ringers rang enthusiastically as the audience arrived. Choir provided a wide range of musical items which included soloists, a duet and a trio and full choir. Special mention should be made of 13 year old Bill Holloway who fresh from singing evensong at Lincoln Cathedral arrived in time and delighted all present with his solo performance of ‘Skinny Love’ a song with which he has recently won a singing competition for 30 secondary schools! Favourite hymns chosen by members of the congregation of St Helen were sung and enjoyed by the whole community present

After the concert we tucked into a vast array of superb refreshments provided by many of the participants of the evening.

The raffle table was laden and Ann and Dick Riggall raised a splendid £162 there.

11

The evening was considered to be a great community success and could only have happened with the willing help of so many individuals: cleaners, decorators, bakers, providers of raffle prizes, tea and coffee makers, washers up, bell ringers, singers and lighting engineer, Alan!

With donations and the raffle proceeds I was able to bank £217. -at least sufficient to keep the oil tank half full!

It was terrific to see the church so full. Let’s do it all again, was the general consensus- next year??

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED- A GREAT TEAM EFFORT. Valerie Starky

Epitaph on a Hare Here lies, whom hound did ne’er pursue, Nor swifter greyhound follow, Whose foot ne’er tainted morning dew, Nor ear heard huntsman’s hallo’,

Old Tiney, surliest of his kind, Who, nursed with tender care, And to domesticate bounds confined, Was still a wild jack-hare.

Though duly from my hand he took His pittance every night, He did it with a jealous look, And, when he could, would bite.

His diet was of wheaten bread, And milk, and oats, and straw, Thistles, or lettuces instead, With sand to scour his maw.

On twigs of hawthorn he regaled, On pippins’ russet peel; And, when his juicy salads failed, Sliced carrot pleased him well.

A Turkey carpet was his lawn, Whereon he loved to bound, To skip and gambol like a fawn,

And swing his rump around.

His frisking was at evening hours, For then he lost his fear; But most before approaching showers, Or when a storm drew near.

Eight years and five round•rolling moons He thus saw steal away, Dozing out all his idle noons, And every night at play.

13

I kept him for his humour’s sake, For he would oft beguile My heart of thoughts that made it ache, And force me to a smile.

But now, beneath this walnut-shade He finds his long, last home, And waits in snug concealment laid, Till gentler Puss shall come.

He, still more agèd, feels the shocks From which no care can save, And, partner once of Tiney’s box, Must soon partake his grave. William Cowper (1731–1800)

Christian Aid Week: ‘All mums should live’

Sierra Leone is the world’s most dangerous place to become a mum. Every day 10 women die from giving birth. In Sawula district, the community struggle with a clinic which has no electricity and only two delivery beds.

15

Jebbeh is heavily pregnant but as her baby grows, it’s not joy that fills her heart, but fear. When Jebbeh’s sister Fatmata went in to labour, there were so few ambulances that Fatmata had no choice but to walk for three hours under the baking sun, to the nearest hospital. The journey was long and with every step Fatmata struggled to keep walking. Photo credit: Christian Aid/Tom Pilston

Jebbeh told us: ‘My sister was crying out with hunger. She died on the side of the road. She never gave birth.’

This Christian Aid Week, together, we can make childbirth safe for mums and babies. Through our gifts and prayers, we can help give the world’s poorest mums a chance to live.

Stand with mums Christian Aid Week, 12-18 May, our church is organising… 11th May - Silver Cross and Copper Path at Stickney, 10am – 12 noon 18th May – Fund raiser at St James coffee morning, 10am – 12 noon Please look out for other events being organised at a church near you.

Will you be a partner for change? If our church raised £300, it could help provide a new delivery bed so more mums like Jebbeh can deliver their babies safely.

FAMILY SERVICE Children, grown-ups and a large grey rabbit attended the Family service on April 7th when the theme was How Much? The service was led by Jane Parker. Reverend Joan Thornett started her sermon by asking the congregation to join with her in singing ‘How much is that doggie in the window’ and talking about pets mentioning Daisy the rabbit that was sitting in a push chair at the back of the Church. She continued by explaining the Bible reading when Mary poured expensive ointment over the feet of Jesus and how Judas had felt the money spent should have been given to the poor. Jesus was later prepared to be crucified for love of us.

During the talk by Jane and Margaret the congregation were asked to guess the price of various items bought from a local super market and then asked how much they would ask to perform a good deed. The children were asked how much a parent charged for washing clothes, providing food and making life comfortable and it was decided there was ‘NO CHARGE’. 19

As there is no Family service on Easter Sunday Reverend Joan presented the children with an Easter egg at ‘No Charge’.

The next Family service will be on Sunday, May 5th at 10.00am – ‘Minted’

ERESBY NEWS

Pat Bourn and the volunteer flower arrangers visited Eresby Hall again in March and the choice of arrangement this time was a basket. The pussy willow had been dyed pink which gave a delicate splash of colour to the arrangement. The next visit will fall on St George's Day so Union Jacks will be incorporated into the arrangement.

A new activity has been introduced to the residents. Indoor armchair bowls took place on March 14th and 28th. The residents were able to roll a ball down a shute towards an inclined mat with holes in it without getting out of their chair. This was obviously a popular activity and with the help of Polly and Linda caused much laughter.

A Family and Residents meeting also took place in March and Reverend Teresa took a service of Holy Communion.

On March 29th the residents were treated to a concert by a singing duo called Red Beryl. Popular songs by Connie Francis, Nancy Sinatra and the Everley Brothers were sung and many of the residents enjoyed joining in.

More Newhome thoughts on Computers

I still have people ask me, “Do I need a new computer?” and “Is this one fast enough?” These are both legitimate and sensible questions. My answer is normally “Does it do what you want it to?” or “What do you think you will gain?” Typical political/religious answers. A question with a question. Jesting a side, they are the right answers. If you think about your computer like you think about your car then the answers tend to jump out at you much more. Sometimes I just fancy that one because I can or do. For most of us it boils down to what do I actually want to do with it. Pop off and collect some emails, look up something online, buy a present and have it sent direct. These things don't need much power and often a good service or a small upgrade will reinvigorate your machine just like it would your car. Don't get distracted by the couple of times you do something complicated on the computer like detailed editing of a video. If you do this once a year it is no different to taking the car on holiday once a year. It might not be the best car for the job but it will do for once a year. This is different to someone that travels the country all day every day.

So how can you get the best out of your machine? First look at the programmes/apps you use. Make a list of the ones you don't use, many may have come with the machine or have been sneaked in when you have updated some other software. You can help by uninstalling them. If you have Windows 10 then click on the flag at bottom left and right click on the programme you want to uninstall from the programme list. This will take you to 'Programs and Features' which is normally found in 'Control Panel'. Once there you will be able to uninstall your chosen programme and any others in your list. Programmes like 'Edge' do not have an ‘uninstall’ as they are part of the system.

Uninstalling programmes is a good basic clean up and will stop them starting every time you start the computer. Toolbar add-ons are another good target. Most are a waste of space and get in the way. While you are at it you can also remove the software for that old printer you no longer have. Keep it lean.

Other than getting rid of software you could open up what you have and under the help menu you will often find 'check for updates'. This is a good choice. It helps to keep the machine secure and running well...normally.

This year the Cathedral is hosting an event on Saturday 8th June to explore different kinds of prayer within the context of Thy Kingdom Come – an annual initiative. Novena and Prayer Journals are available in your church so please take one. What follows is the introduction to the Novena booklet:- Ascension is the day when we remember Jesus’ return to heaven after his resurrection, and Pentecost is when we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Jesus’ disciples - often known as the ‘birthday of the Church’. The nine days between these two key celebrations offer us an opportunity for prayer and reflection as we long for that gift of the Holy Spirit for ourselves and our communities. In this in-between time, we invite you to pray with us, “Thy Kingdom Come” - that the Holy Spirit would come and bless and challenge us to witness to God’s life-changing work. When we came to prepare this year’s Novena, we felt drawn to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew’s Gospel. As we explored deeper in and around the Sermon, we found so many passages that speak of God’s love and care for even the smallest details of our lives - and of the ways in which Jesus challenges our attitudes, priorities and perceptions. This little booklet is your invitation to explore for yourself, through art and prayer, this dual message of love and challenge. As you do so, know that you are part of the global Thy Kingdom Come family, seeking God’s transformation for yourself and those you meet. Join with us as we pray together “Come Holy Spirit: Thy Kingdom Come” - and may our waiting and praying open our hearts afresh to God’s possibilities. The Novena Team Canterbury 2019

“Are you sitting comfortable? Then I will begin.” Last year I wrote my first children’s book ‘Barty and Darcy.’ It was published as an e-book in January of this year. Reviewers from the likes of Amazon, Apple Books, NetGalley and Goodreads have described the book as “cute’ – ‘A lovely story.’ – ‘A book which I read with excitement.’ (this was from a mother reading it to her 3years old daughter.) These reviews which can be substantiated by the above organisations, are from customers all over the world, especially the UK and the USA. Many of the reviewers are teachers and librarians who have recommended it highly for reading.

Aimed at the age range 6 to 10 years old, it is being read to children much younger, some as low as 3 years old. It is also being read by adults. The story is “cute” but it also has a meaning. The cost is only £1.99 and can be read on an iPad, a Laptop, a Tablet, or an iPhone. Visit, Kindle, Books, Goodreads or Troubador Publishing and buy at the low price. Let the young ones read it or read it to them. Believe me, they will love it! Thanks for reading this. Mo Bird – email [email protected] you can contact me on Facebook at Maurice Bird, (Lincoln, Lincolnshire.)

Can’t work these new fangle gadgets? Get someone you know to help you to buy it, don’t let your kids, your nieces and nephews or grandchildren miss out. Make someone happy!
