1 Bishop’s Letter

In Christian tradition the Five Holy Wounds, or Five Sacred Wounds, are the five piercing wounds which Jesus suffered during the Crucifixion. We can see the way in which they have been a particular focus for devotion by the way in which they have often been depicted in art – most famously in depictions of Doubting Thomas, or in music, like Bach’s St Matthew Passion, or Handel’s Messiah, as well as some of our well-known Passiontide hymns.

In these first days of Easter, when we experience the joy of the resurrection afresh in our lives, the image of our risen Lord walking the earth yet still carrying the wounds of the crucifixion is powerful and poignant.

I was struck recently by the text of a contemporary hymn whose first line speaks of the risen Christ ‘walking with wounded feet’. That image, of Jesus walking with wounded feet, reminds us that, through the life, death and resurrection of our Lord, God knows what it is to carry pain in this human life.

Through Jesus, God has experienced the reality of searing physical pain, as well as the anguish that comes from rejection and betrayal. And yet, God does not allow it to contain or define Jesus, nor does it crush his spirit. Instead, the experience of it becomes part of who he is and shapes him for the work he has to do. So, too, our experiences as human beings and children of God shape us and become part of who we are; but they need not contain or define us.

The work of resurrection is ours to share, and God calls each one of us, wounded as we are, to play our part in proclaiming the wonder of the resurrection to our broken world.

9 He Is Risen- Alleluia!

Spring is a wonderful time of year, it gives us hope. Looking about the garden it is wonderful to see the new buds on some of the plants, shoots breaking through the soil and some of the plants I thought were dead are definitely showing signs of growth, of new life.

After our Lenten journey we will arrive at Easter Morning, hopefully refreshed and definitely filled with the joy that only that Easter morning can bring. Jesus’ death on the cross and then his glorious resurrection offers each one of us an opportunity to choose and follow him so that we might have eternal life. In 1 Peter 3:15 it states:

“But have reverence for Christ in your hearts, and honour him as Lord. Be ready at all times to answer anyone who asks you to explain the hope you have in you” GNB

This quotation encapsulates everything about discipleship. At the Lent group we have been looking at the various aspects of being a disciple of Christ and we have been sharing our journey of faith with one another. As disciples we are all called to share the Good News with those we meet on our journey and to “explain the hope you have in you” as Peter puts it. On that first Easter morning Mary went running to share with the disciples to tell them what she had just experienced, it was such wonderful news she could not keep it to herself. We can only just imagine the elation and joy that she must have felt. God wants us to feel the same desire to share all that he has done for us with those we know.

This Easter let us celebrate, not only with good food and of course with Easter eggs but also with renewed joy in our hearts for our risen Saviour.

Blessings Teresa

11 Old Bolingbroke 100+ Club

What’s in a name! Well it can be a little confusing, especially when it is Bolingbroke! When the Club was started around 35 years ago it was for the Old Bolingbroke Group that then consisted of , , Old Bolingbroke, , Lusby, Hagworthingham and Mavis Enderby Parishes to raise funds for Group Expenses. In 1983 the Group became part of the new Marden Hill Group. However, the 100+ Club continued under the same name with the same intention as before and did not include the Parishes of E & W Keal or A/S & S/P Toynton. It has raised a great deal of money over the years and I want to say a very big thank you to so many people who have worked and supported the 100+ Club. We now have a new Grouping called Bolingbroke Benefice consisting of the former Marden Hill, Partney, Spilsby and Stickney Groups – all very confusing. At a meeting 14th March it was decided to re-launch the Club and to explore widening the Parishes involved. To that end a Meeting of Marden Hill Cluster is to meet at Spilsby Vicarage 7.30pm Wednesday 22nd April. We are asking that a minimum of 1 representative be present from any MH Parises who wish to be part of the Club to be present or indicate their willingness to support the Club. The idea is to ask Parishes to opt in and then it will be only to those Parishes that pay-outs will be made. So to coin a phrase “you have to be in it to win it!”

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to 'Honour thy father and thy mother,' she asked, 'Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?' Without missing a beat, one little boy answered, 'Thou shall not kill.'

St Andrew’s………All Wrapped Up….

The scaffolders, having worked through some fairly grim conditions, wind, rain, hail, snow and ice have now completed, ahead of schedule, the erection of the scaffold and protective covering over the roofs. It has been suggested that, as the church now has a ‘hat on’ we need do no more!....hmmm...perhaps not…..

The contractors can now commence the task of removing the existing lead, and checking the timbers for levels of damage. We are hopeful that nothing untoward is found and the project can proceed as per our original costing/time schedule.

We would ask that visitors to the church/churchyard be aware of the condition of the driveway. Due to the wet weather conditions it is churned up and rutted in places. The grass/mud area at the bottom of the drive (Left hand side coming up) is best avoided. It is hoped that as the weather improves, and we can get some drier conditions, this will become more manageable.

17 As Easter draws closer, Lent always seem to run slowly – but this year I am glad about that because there is so much to do! During Holy Week, our series of events are designed to take us from the Secular to the Sacred as Easter Sunday approaches. It is always good to stop occasionally and discover the age-old story afresh, so why not come and join us as we travel Holy Week together. Each event is a stand alone event, so you do not need to come to all of them – although it would be great to see you there.

Easter Day is greeted, in my tradition, ‘early in the morning’ and this year I am hoping some will join me. 6.00am may seem far too early to be out of bed and in church – but it is one day in the year, and the best day of the year – there will be time to catch up on sleep later.

Easter is so exciting! I love it! And ‘loving it’ is what led the disciples to continue their lives of discipleship – which is exactly what we will be doing through our Developing Discipleship Programme which begins on 19 April. This is definitely not about turning the congregation into evangelists or ‘bible-bashers’. It is not about raising more money to keep the church afloat. It is not about forcing the congregation to do anything new. So what is it about? My hope is that people in our 3 congregations will pick up something of the vision of what the church, operating at its fullest potential within the community, could look like. We will be listening to God, to each other and to our community, and we will be letting that inform our plans for the next 5 years. Small steps can, and do, make a difference if we take them together.

The important dates for the Programme are: 19 April – Opening worship with the Bishop of at New Leake at 11.15am 25 April – Vocations Event for Stickney and New Leake 6 May – Values Event for Stickney and New Leake 3 June – Vocations, Values and Vision Event for 6 June – Vision Event for Stickney and New Leake 5 July – Celebration Worship to share our visions and plans followed by a shared lunch.

Easter is not the only time that is exciting!

18 FAMILY SERVICE

The Family Service team, led by Reverend Joan Thornett, were pleased to welcome students from Halton Holegate CE school, Partney CE school, Spilsby Primary school and King Edward Academy to the Education Sunday service at St James Church on March 1st. Over 70 people were present. The theme of the service was “Gone Missing” and Jane Howsam had prepared booklets for the children which included pictures of objects with something missing which they had to complete and colour in before the service.

Harriette Rowden-Jones read a poem and Mrs Kay, Head Teacher of Partney school and Mr Sunter, Head of Halton Holegate school each read a lesson from St Luke’s gospel about the presentation of Jesus at the temple. Jane Parker and Margaret Cook asked the children about things they would miss if they were unable to go to school, were unable to use an arm, a leg or were blind and then everyone joined in with an action song. They also hunted for a missing object around the Church. Reverend Thornett talked about school days being “the best days of our lives”. She then explained about Jesus being presented to Simeon and Anna in the temple and how God had sent Jesus to be the missing link between God and us and to teach us more about God. Prayers were said for all the schools in the area and for all those who worked in education. Children, parents, teachers and the congregation were invited to stay for coffee after the service.

The next Family Service will be on Easter Sunday when there will be a Family Eucharist at 10.00am. There will be a craft activity for the children before the service. Everyone will be made very welcome.

Head teacher, Mr Sunter, and pupils from Halton Primary School

19 PARTNEY NEWS

Ploughmans Lunch 7th March

The Victory Hall was prepared at 8.30am, a new cooker was going to add to the tension of the day, would the tates be cooked? The washing, scraping and chopping of vegetables began. The tables were set out and cutlery wrapped and placed, tea cups at the ready, urn filled and fired up ready for action.

The banquet of rices, coleslaws, chutneys, rolls, eggs, cheese, veggies and home made puds all lined up ready for our guests. What of the potatoes, were they ready for the noon deadline, yes they were!

Having plated up meals for the home delivery run, our team were ready to serve. A healthy queue of happy, chattering faces await their meal of ham, cheese and rolls purchased from Simon’s the Butchers of Spilsby.

Thank you to all who gave prizes for the raffle including Partney Valley Farm Shop who donated a hamper of vegetables. What a wonderful success made possible by all those village folk who gave freely of their time, skills and love to the community. Thank you all very much indeed!! After expenses over £500 was raised for the Victory Hall funds.

A big thank you to those who support our bi-annual event, we look forward to seeing you again in October.

Film Night

In January Mick Lovelock held another of his Film Nights to raise funds for the entertainment at the August Fair. A good audience were treated to four films from his ever growing collection. On view this time were films of Partney and Spilsby in the 1960's, the Silver Jubilee celebrations in Partney in 1977, a unique drive around the village in 1990 and an illustrated talk by the late Felix Goodwin. There will be another Film Night at the Spilsby Methodist Church on 10th April if you missed this one.

St Patricks Day Dance

On 14th March the Victory Hall was filled with people for another night in the Partney Locarno. This month the theme was St Patrick's Day and a large number of leprechauns set the tone for an evening of fun and dancing.

20 Next month is an Easter Dance - see the Partney village website at www.partneyvillage.co.uk for details.

Great is Your Faithfulness

On Easter morning instead of the customary “Hello” Christians the world over greet each other with the words; “Christ is risen.” And the reply is made; “ He is risen indeed.”

I sat watching the wonderful service, from St. Paul’s Cathedral, commemorating the brave and courageous men and women in our armed forces who had fought in Afghanistan. The Easter greeting was wandering around in my mind as I thought about my Easter letter. Then the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev’d Justin Welby spoke and I felt so proud and humble and inspired. His words spoke of resurrection and life, in the face of turmoil and tragedy. He said:

‘Great is your faithfulness,’ says the prophet Jeremiah, turning to God in a time of deep distress. As our nation honours at this service all of you who have served in Afghanistan – forces personnel and many others, alongside so many of other nations – I ask you to hear those same words today, reverberating around our land: great is your faithfulness. You know about faithfulness .Today is a moment for us to say thank you: thank you to all who served, whatever your role. We thank you for your faithfulness: you who left family behind, you who trained hard, you who did not turn from danger, you who suffered injury and you who risked yourselves to care for the injured. I’m told that each wounded person was supported by up to 80 others by the time they got home. Great is your faithfulness. We also thank those of you who stayed behind, who let your loved ones go: you who worried for their safety each day and took your phone to your bedside each night, you who lived with the pining of children, as well as your own fears. Great is your faithfulness. And we honour the faithfulness of all those who gave up their lives to give peace and security for others. We will remember them and we recognise

21 them, not only by saying thank you but by showing our thanks – with words and also in action: as we strive to imitate their self-giving, as we seek to be as courageous in living as they were in dying. As we seek to fulfill the words of Jesus in the beatitudes: where the promise of blessing is not something warm and fuzzy to keep to ourselves but something that is found in our giving and our sharing – in comforting those who mourn, in thirsting for righteousness, in peace-making. It is no light matter to say ‘Great is your faithfulness’, if we realise what faithfulness costs, and dare to commit ourselves, for decades to come, to the same faithfulness. Jeremiah voiced these words to God after seeing his country devastated, his people killed or exiled, his city and livelihood destroyed. He who wrote those words knew suffering, he knew grief and loss: yet he spoke not of blame but hope, not of recrimination but of faith, not of anger but of love .As Jesus died, he didn’t know whether his suffering had been in vain. In sorrow, pain and agony – yet in hope – he said ‘it is finished’. And because of his faithfulness, we can anticipate God’s opening to us the gates of eternal life. One day we will all, each one of us, stand before God. These are the only words we long to hear from him. They are the gold standard for all of us. "Great is your faithfulness, good and faithful servant". Amen. Lamentations 3:22-33 Matthew 5:1-12.

I rang the Archbishop’s press office to ask whether I could use the words in my Easter letter. The permission was given with enthusiasm. What is she rambling on about now? I hear you say. The words just spoke to me of Jesus Christ who gave his life that we might live. The words spoke to me of those who gave their lives and sacrificed their families to follow Jesus and spread his message of peace and love and eternity.

The archbishop said; One day we will all, each one of us, stand before God. These are the only words we long to hear from him. They are the gold standard for all of us. "Great is your faithfulness, good and faithful servant". I was deeply moved by his words and how they echoed the resurrection message of our Lord. So many of our loved ones struggle to make sense of life and the hideous brick bats it throws at them. But so often they are the ones who teach us about faith and love. Great is their faithfulness. Jesus Christ gave his life that we might live, the sermon on the mount, ( Matthew 5:1-2) has so much to teach us if we would but listen.

When Jesus* saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. ‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. ‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

22 for they will be filled. ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. ‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely* on my account.2Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Jesus Christ IS risen, he is risen indeed, Alleluia.

Easter Blessings

This course explores a starting point for our Christian journey.

What does it mean when we say ‘Do you turn to Christ?’

Do you believe and trust in God the Father, his son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit?’

What does it mean to repent of your sins and renounce evil’

We will explore together how our lives blossom when we go God’s way.

If at the end you feel you’d like to be confirmed that will be good but if you’re not yet ready that will also be good.

At Sunday School they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs. Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as though he was ill, and she said, 'Johnny, what is the matter?' Little Johnny responded, 'I have pain in my side. I think I'm going to have a wife.'

The mother replied, 'Because white is the colour of happiness and today is the happiest day of her life.' The child thought about this for a moment then said, 'So why is the groom wearing black?'

 A little girl, dressed in her Sunday best, was running as fast as she could, trying not to be late for Bible class. As she ran she prayed, 'Dear Lord, please don't let me be late! Dear Lord, please don't let me be late!' While she was running and praying, she tripped on a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again! As she ran she once again began to pray, 'Dear Lord, please don't let me be late...But please don't shove me either!'
