Descendants of Samuel Skipworth of Halton Holegate Compiled by Mary Skipworth 24 June 2016 Samuel Skipworth of Halton Holegate Scale: one map square = 10 km - 2 - Compiled by Mary Skipworth 24 Jun 2016 Samuel Skipworth of Halton Holegate - 3 - Compiled by Mary Skipworth 24 Jun 2016 First Generation 1. Samuel SKIPWORTH of Halton Holegate, presumed son of Thomas SKIPWORTH and Alice EVISON, was born about 1752 and was buried aged 82 on 2 May 1834 in Halton Holegate, Lincolnshire, UK.2 No baptism has been found, so his parents are a matter of speculation. The detailed argument for linking the six children of Thomas and Alice in one extended family is set out in my paper Skipworths from around Spilsby. Samuel married Rebecca SYLVESTER on 10 Jun 1782 in Halton Holegate, both were “of this parish”, both marked the register rather than signing, witnesses were John Skipworth (assumed to be Samuel’s eldest brother) and Thomas Atckin.2 Rebecca died giving birth to their son Thomas, and was buried on 3 Dec 1792 in Halton Holegate.2 She was possibly born in 1760, the daughter of Sarah SYLVESTER who had married Samuel’s brother John in 1772. Samuel and Rebecca’s children were: 2 i. Mary SKIPWORTH 1783 - refer to page 5 3 ii. Mary SKIPWORTH 1784 - refer to page 5 4 iii. Samuel SKIPWORTH 1788 - 1867 refer to page 5 5 iv. William SKIPWORTH 1791 - refer to page 5 6 v. Thomas SKIPWORTH 1792 - 1854 refer to page 6 Samuel remarried Susannah HOFF on 25 Oct 1801 in Halton Holegate, both parties marked the register, both were “of this parish”, witnesses were John Skipworth and Thomas Bucknall.2 1841: Susannah aged about 80, living with Eliza Atkinson (John Skipworth’s granddaughter) in the 1841 census of Halton Holegate. 1842: Susanna buried aged 84 on 11 Mar 1842 in Halton Holegate.2 For Samuel’s parents and siblings refer to www.genealogy.ianskipworth.com/pdf/skipsspilsby.pdf Not identified: Rebecca SKIPWORTH who married William STAINTON at Little Steeping on 13 May 1807. She was “of Little Steeping” at the time of her marriage and could have been a daughter of Samuel and Rebecca. No further trace of this couple has been found. - 4 - Compiled by Mary Skipworth 24 Jun 2016 Samuel Skipworth of Halton Holegate Second Generation (Children) 2. Mary SKIPWORTH (Samuel 1) was baptised on 15 Jul 1783 according to the Bishop’s Transcript for Halton Holegate as extracted by www.FamilySearch.org. No Skipworth baptism appears in the parish register for 1783.2 No record of her burial has been found but it is assumed either she died before the birth of her sister, another Mary, or the Bishop’s transcript date is an error. (The Bishop’s Transcript does not include the following entry for 1784.) 3. Mary SKIPWORTH (Samuel 1) was baptised on 11 Jul 1784 in Halton Holegate.2 She was probably Mary Skipworth who married Richard PAGE on 28 Apr 1812 in Halton Holegate, both signed the register, both “of this parish”, witnesses John Skipworth and Thomas Bucknall.2 4. Samuel SKIPWORTH of Edlington (Samuel 1) was born about 1788 in Halton Holegate, and was buried aged 79 on 24 Mar 1867 in Hameringham, Lincolnshire.1 1788: no baptism record found, his birthplace in 1851 suggests a son of Samuel & Rebecca. 1815: marriage to Patience at Hameringham 1816: husbandman in Thomas' baptism at Edlington 1817: labourer in William's baptism at Edlington 1841: age 50, at Hameringham with wife and Susanna Dixon in household 1851: age 63, born Halton Holegate, lodger with Eli/Ann Bradley at Hameringham, widower, with a visitor Thomas Skipworth age 59 born at Halton Holegate, presumably his brother. Samuel’s mother-in-law was a Patience Bradley, so he was probably lodging with a relative. 1853: At Gainsborough show, won £2 second prize for the longest serving farm servant living and working exclusively for the same family, or on the same farm - 38 years with Mr Francis Richardson, Hameringham.10 Mr Richardson must have had farms at Edlington and Hameringham, Patience was with Samuel in both places. 1861: age 72, born Halton Holegate, living at Hameringham. 1867: age 79 in burial record and death registration Samuel married Patience BORMAN, widow, on 17 May 1815 in Hameringham.2 Samuel a bachelor signed the register, Patience a widow marked, both “of this parish.” A Patience Skipworth was buried at Hameringham on 30 Apr 1849, said to be aged 6.2 I believe this is Samuel’s wife, and that the age is an error. The entry appears as if the clerk intended to add a second digit, making 6 into something like 67. Samuel was a widower in the 1851 census. Patience was baptised Patience SCOTT on 3 March 1782 in Halton, Lincolnshire and had been married first to John BURMAN on 27 March 1804 in Hameringham. Further information about Patience and her family is available in FamilySearch Family Tree. 1841: Patience aged about 55 with Samuel at Hameringham 7 i. Thomas SKIPWORTH of Asgarby 1816 - 1891 refer to page 7 8 ii. William SKIPWORTH of West Ashby 1817 - 1904 refer to page 7 9 iii. Patience Easter/Esther SKIPWORTH 1822 - 1899 refer to page 8 - 5 - Compiled by Mary Skipworth 24 Jun 2016 Samuel Skipworth of Halton Holegate 5. William SKIPWORTH (Samuel 1) was baptised on 15 Aug 1791 in Halton Holegate.2 Nothing further known. 6. Thomas SKIPWORTH (Samuel 1) was baptised on 3 Dec 1792 in Halton Holegate.2 A second entry in the register has been squeezed between the burials for 1792 and the baptisms for 1793. It reads “Jany 3rd 1793 Thos son of Saml. Skipworth” To save space the words “1793” and “Baptisms” belonging to the heading have been circled to associate them with “Thos son of Samuel.” I take this to be a second record of Thomas’ baptism and not a burial record. Had it been a burial it should have been entered on the following page with the burials for 1793. Certainly the register is difficult to interpret, but the census evidence is that this Thomas survived. To compound the difficulty with Thomas’ records, Family Search show his baptism as 3 Sep 1792, and burial as 4 Feb 1793, both of which are so different from the register I suspect they come from the Bishop’s Transcripts. 1841: census entry not found 1851: age 59 born Halton Holegate, visiting Samuel (his brother #4 above) at Hameringham. 1854: could be Thomas Skipworth whose death was registered in Horncastle RD 1854: Halton Holegate burial register has an entry “Skipworth, Halton, Sept” no other details No marriage or children for this Thomas have been found. Note: Samuel Skipworth of Halton Holegate and his brother William Skipworth of Little Steeping both baptised sons named Samuel in 1788. They repeated the pattern in 1792 when both named their sons Thomas. In 1851 Samuel’s Samuel and Thomas were together at Hameringham, William’s Samuel was at Little Steeping and William’s Thomas was at West Ashby. - 6 - Compiled by Mary Skipworth 24 Jun 2016 Samuel Skipworth of Halton Holegate Third Generation (Grandchildren) 7. Thomas SKIPWORTH of Asgarby (Samuel 4, Samuel 1) was baptised on 1 Apr 1816 in Edlington, Lincolnshire,6 and was buried on 13 May 1891 in Farlesthorpe, Lincolnshire.1 1841: age about 20 at Asgarby with wife Mary Ann 1843: labourer in Susan's baptism at Asgarby 1851: age 35 born Edlington, ag lab at Asgarby, with wife and dau Susan age 7 1861: age 45 born Edlington, labourer at Asgarby with wife and 3 children, also visitor Ann Skipworth aged 10 born Miningsby (his brother William’s daughter, #13 below). 1871: age 55 born Edlington, ag lab at Asgarby with wife, 2 children, married daughter visiting with granddaughter. 1881: age 65, ag lab at Scamblesby, with wife, son Thomas and dau-in-law Jemima 1891: age 75, described as wife's parents, boarding with Susan Pell, hus, dau, servant, at Farlesthorpe 1891: age 75 in burial record, husband and wife buried the same day Note that there are 2 Asgarbys in Lincolnshire. This family was at Asgarby by Spilsby. Thomas married Mary Ann SMITH on 16 May 1839 in Winceby, Lincolnshire.4,7 Mary was born about 1815 in Winceby, and was buried on 13 May 1891 in Farlesthorpe,1 aged 77. 1839: daughter of William SMITH 1841: age 20 1851: age 56 [36?] 1861: age 46 1871: age 56 1881: age 66 1891: age 76, with her husband boarding with daughter Susan and family 1891: age 77 in burial record, husband and wife buried the same day Thomas and Mary Ann’s children were: 10 i. Susan (Susanne) SKIPWORTH 1843 - refer to page 9 11 ii. Thomas SKIPWORTH 1853 - >1910 refer to page 9 12 iii. Mary Elizabeth SKIPWORTH 1855 - refer to page 9 8. William SKIPWORTH of West Ashby (Samuel 4, Samuel 1) was baptised on 29 Oct 1817 in Edlington,3,8 and died in 1904 in Horncastle RD,4 at age 87. (West Ashby is 3 km north of Horncastle) 1817: 29 Oct baptism from Bishops Transcript (FamilySearch) parents Samuel & Rebecca, however Patience was mother to the children either side of William so probably a mistake. 1817: 19 Oct baptism from Parish Register (Freereg) gives the parents as Samuel & Patience 1841: age 20, at home Hameringham 1851: age 33, born Edlington, ag lab at Miningsby with wife, dau, nurse 1861: age 45, born Edlington, ag lab at West Ashby with wife and son 1864: charged with running away and deserting his wife and children, charge later withdrawn 1871: age 56, born Edlington, at West Ashby 1881: age 71, gen labourer at West Ashby 1891: age 78, of West Ashby 1901: age 85, retired ag lab at West Ashby 1904: age 89 in death registration The ages recorded throughout William’s life give estimated birth years varying from 1810 to 1818, suggesting that he had little idea of the correct figure.
