Bishop’s Letter

I have always thought of September as a month for new beginnings, and one which therefore resonates very much with our faith.

This month brings new beginnings for pupils and students of every age as a new academic year begins. From the smallest toddler to the oldest mature student, the prospect of learning new things makes us both a little excited and a little apprehensive too. A whole academic year is opening up, offering new opportunities for us to grow in knowledge, understanding and skill.

In other areas, like the world of work, the autumn is often a time for new projects to begin as everyone returns to work after the summer holidays. With renewed energy and refreshed interest, we feel more able to tackle new projects or harness new ideas.

In our churches, the pattern of fellowship that goes on outside our regular worship will be beginning again after a summer break – whatever form that pattern takes for our particular – prayer groups, perhaps, or Mothers Union meetings, fellowship, lunch clubs, and so on. The pattern is wonderfully unique in every parish.

One of the things we have discovered over the last couple of decades is that learning does not stop when we leave full-time education. It is a life-long process, however formal or informal it might be.

This is just as true in our gaining in knowledge and understanding of our faith. It is a life-long process to deepen our knowledge of the one who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Throughout his earthly ministry, Jesus called people to make a new start and to learn about and demonstrate the love of God in their words, thoughts and actions.

Jesus’ ministry concluded with the resurrection, the greatest new beginning of all time, which showed that through God’s grace, love and forgiveness we can all make new beginnings from whatever situation we find ourselves in.

May God bless your new beginnings at this time of year, whatever shape or form they may take.

6 The Incumbent’s opening comments but this time from the Assistant Curate

As I come to write these opening comments I find myself reading the coming Sunday's gospel text. (Luke 13:10 – 17) It is a story of a woman who had been crippled for 18 years and unable to stand straight. Jesus cured from her ailment and she immediately stood up straight and praised God loudly. The synagogue leader was indignant because Jesus healed on the sabbath and suggested that he should have done his healing later on, on some other day.

I would like to leave you with two separate thoughts from this text. The synagogue leader wanted Jesus to put off making a difference to the crippled woman, to not speak his words of comfort and healing to her. How often do we put off making a difference to others? When was the last time we said words of comfort to those around us? Come to think of it when was the last time we said words of love to those within our own families? So many times we have opportunities to tell those people around us that we love them, that we care for them, and that we truly value their company and them being around. So many times we let these opportunities filter through our fingers like sand. We seem so nervous of how people may react if we reveal our feelings about them, to them. We seem to think of the worst case scenario in terms of how they may react. And so we let the moment pass, and then the next moment pass, and the next.

Then suddenly those opportunities to speak words of love pass completely, never to return as the people we love and value move away, or grow up, or die. And then we are left with feelings of regret that are hard to assuage.

My second thought comes from the effect that the words of Jesus had upon the crippled woman. She immediately stood up straight and was healed. This was not a healing over time but something that was instant. The difference that the words of Jesus made to her had an effect immediately after being spoken.

Perhaps we can learn from this. If we speak words of love to those we care about, words of healing to those who are broken, words of understanding to the lost, however hard this is, perhaps the difference that we can make will be almost as immediate. Consider being on the receiving end of a person telling you the truth of how much they value their relationship with you, how much they appreciate your friendship, the person trying to put into words all that you mean to them. Would you reject their words or would you feel a little more valued in the

7 world? Would you walk away and ignore these words, or would you walk away and try to share those words of love with others? We can all make a difference to others, and we don't need to have money or possessions or cars or houses. All we need is a kind word, and to not let the opportunity pass to share our feelings with others. Through this we may even find that our own lives totally change. Martin.

We would like to extend a really big thank you to everyone who was involved over the weekend which resulted in £2200 being raised for the Kitchen & Toilet Fund. Another fantastic team effort! Hopefully we will have more news on the developments soon.

Special thanks must go to our ‘young ones’, Angharad Faulkner, William Brocklebank, Eleri Faulkner, Claire Howsam, Kelly and Emma Johnson who between them managed to raise over £150. Their dedication, enthusiasm, energy and sense of fun kept all the ‘not so young ones’ going throughout the weekend. A new sport is in the development stages…pew jumping!

If you have any feedback about the weekend, good or not so good, please let us know. Also suggestions on how we could improve on any future fayres will be most welcome. Please get in touch via Spilsby Vicarage. Many thanks, Jane & Jean

12 ERESBY HALL NEWS

It was a beautiful evening for the summer hog roast. Residents and families were able to sit outside to enjoy the food and Pimms. Singer Jenny Webb provided the entertainment and a good time was had by all. Janet Enderby was once again in charge of the drinks.

A tombola at the Spilsby Show helped raise £208 for the refurbishment of the hairdressing salon and Doris Marsh raised £40 at the St James Arts and Crafts fair by selling her cards. This money will go to the amenities fund. Five residents went to the Resident's Fun Day at . The theme this year was the Wild West so residents enjoyed dressing up as cowboys and once again there was a good buffet.

At the time of writing, seven new residents have been welcomed to Eresby from , as the home there is being demolished. They have fitted in very well and two have already attended St James Church for a service and four have been to a Saturday coffee morning. They are all very enthusiastic to join in and have already done some painting and craft work and played Bingo. Three of them are going to Torquay on holiday so we shall enjoy hearing about that when they return.

Pat Bourn and the flower arranging ladies helped the residents to arrange flowers around a carousel for this month’s theme.

The residents now have their own addresses. Instead of living on red wing or blue wing it is now Eresby Walk, Franklin Court, Tennyson Court, Enderby Close, Hundleby Grove or Willoughby Lane and the lounge where films are shown is Phoenix Lounge named after the old cinema in Spilsby.

Visitors are always welcome. Margaret Cook .Volunteer

Olive Tree News

I hope you have all had an enjoyable summer. On September 14th, from 10.30am - 3.00pm we are holding a seminar on the Tabernacle, led by Norman Huntingford, entitled "The Greatest Revelation of Christ". The cost is £12.00 which includes lunch.

In the shop we have the book "A man after God's own heart" by R T Kendall, on offer at £6.50 (rrp £12.99). This is a book about God's relationship with David - and with you. David was a man with deep feelings - he was a poet and musician as well as being Israel's greatest King - and one of the greatest ever military leaders. If you wish to know what it is like to be confided in by God - to become a person after God's own heart too - then this book will help you discover what such a relationship is like.

We have now started to get our Christmas deliveries and have the 2014 lectionaries in stock.

With best wishes from all at Olive Tree 01790 763627, e-mail: [email protected]

PARTNEY FAIR AUGUST 10th 2013

Thanks to the Oliver family for the use of and work on the field, to Brian Cott, the Spilsby Branch of the Royal British Legion and Alan Bugg for the use of marquees, to our vet Richard Morris and James Boulton for the use of the Car Park field. We would also like to thank Judy Theobald and Radio Lincolnshire and the Lincolnshire Standard for so much free publicity. But more than anything, we say a huge “thank you” to all helpers, this is a TEAM effort and every link makes up the chain. We were also blessed with a fantastic sunny day. Thank goodness. In addition to raising much needed funds, these events create a wonderful community spirit and it was especially great to have youngsters actually volunteering to come and do some work, car parking and generally helping in any way they could. Brilliant. I am sure you will be interested to know that although we didn’t quite make the £3000 magic mark we were not far out and at the moment stand at £2720 and still counting. £2700 in the five hours that we were operating works out at about £9 per minute.

I counted up that there were almost 85 people involved with the Fair, all in their different ways. In addition many others helped and gave their time and efforts in other ways such as making cakes, collecting prizes etc. and in numerous other capacities. The ‘Big Society’ is alive and well in the countryside!

VERY well done.
