Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 A b s t ra c t The short story has been an important genre in 20th century Chinese literature. By its very nature the short story affords the writer the opportunity to introduce swiftly any developments in ideology, theme or style. Scholars have interpreted Chinese fiction published during 1979 as indicative of a "change" in the development of 20th century Chinese literature. This study examines a number of short stories from 1979 in order to determine the extent of that "change". The first two chapters concern the establishment of a representative database and the adoption of viable methods of interpretation. An important, although much neglected, phenomenon in the make-up of 1979 literature are the works which appeared in so-called "nonofficial" journals. -

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TRANSLATIONS OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY CHINESE LITERATURE IN SPAIN (1949-2009) (1) Maialen Marín-Lacarta Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Received: 15 November 2012 Accepted:10 December 2012 2012 1. Indirect translation: a symptom of the present globalized literary polysystem The present state of reception of modern and contemporary Chinese literature in Spain reveals a predominance of indirect translations. The Spanish translations of Nobel Prize-winner in Literature, Mo Yan ( 莫言 ), (2) are a good example: six of the seven Spanish translations of Mo Yan's work are indirect translations from Howard Goldblatt's English version and his latest novel has been translated from the original Chinese by a translator whose mother tongue is Chinese. However, very few Spanish critics or journalists have referred to the way in which these works have been translated. Most of the translations of 20th and 21st century Chinese literature that have been published in Spain — in Spanish and in Catalan — in the last ten years are taken from the English or French versions. From 2001 to 2009, for instance, 25 novels have been translated indirectly (15 from English, eight from French, one from Italian and one from Spanish into Catalan), while only eight novels have been translated directly from the Chinese. (3) This development contradicts the assumption that in the evolution of the reception of a distanced literary system, both geographically and linguistically, indirect translations are initially more numerous and gradually diminish as a closer relationship develops and the concept of translation changes. This idea is supported by the following quotations: [...] its tolerance of — and actual recourse to — this type of activity were bound to diminish as the concept of translation changed, and in direct proportion to a growing emphasis on the reconstruction of the source-text features (Toury, 1995, 133). -

The conversation brings together two eminent scholars of comparative literature from the East and West. Wang Ning began by asking the status of world literature in an age of proliferating new media and popular culture. I think you must have made some new Chinese friends and got acquainted with new readers and critics and university students during your visit to Shanghai. Since you are now well-known in China for your remarkable books, What Is World Literature? and How to Read World Literature?, both of which will be published soon in Chinese, Chinese readers will regard you as a pioneering figure in promoting world literature in such an age of globalization. Would you please comment on the significance of world litera- ture in an age of globalization, when literature is often reported to be “dead” and literary study is severely challenged by the rise of popular culture and consumer culture in postmodern societies? It seems to me that our global world has more need of literature than ever, and of world literature in particular, where so many people’s hori- zons now are international and global in so much movement of people across borders, and academic institutions are so much more opened out to students around the world. This is certainly true in China; we are seeing a massive movement of Chinese students to many other parts of the world. -

With a straightforward and harsh reflective viewpoint, Yu Hua constructed an intermixed reflection with different forms:living reflection, human characteristic reflection, nationalistic reflection, realistic reflection, philosophical reflection... His reflection helped the readers “re-thinking the past”, turning up the old history’s pages full of blood and tears as a debt for both the writer and the readers to pay back at this present time. Keywords: Yu Hua, novel, reflection, individual life. 1. Introduction Yu Hua is the leader of the Chinese pioneering novel series with works that shocked readers such as Screaming in the rain, Live, Hua Tam Quan’s selling blood story, Brothers. The novels have shown the distinctive features of Yu Hua through the post-modern sense of composition.
